Perimeter Protection
January 9, 2009 – 8:02 amJohn McCain is still a Senator and this week proposed legislation to eliminate the mileage barriers preventing flights out of DCA and LGA to cities out west and beyond. As the article notes, these rules were implemented in the 1960s to encourage use of alternate airports such as Dulles and Newark. Now, with those airports operating as bustling hubs, these rules have limited use.
Of course, there is a severe traffic crunch at airports like LGA, so an airline such as US Airways couldn’t simply just add flights from its hub in PHX to LGA. They’d likely have to eliminate flights from another location. But, overall this would be a win for travelers, especially business travelers that less time in their day to get to JFK or IAD.
