United and Continental are offering a pretty heavy discount on round-trip economy class award tickets to Europe and Africa for travel between January 27 through March 22, 2012 (award ticket must be booked by January 16, 2012). This offer is only valid for flights originating in the US (including Alaska and excluding Hawaii).

  • 20% off for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • 25% off for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

Through the United search engine, the percentage off will automatically appear when you go to book your ticket on United so no extra code is necessary. If your departure is a Th, F, Sa, or Sun, and your return is a M, Tu, or W (or vice versa) the system will average the discount for you.

However, for the Continental search engine, the discount will not appear until you select the desired departure and return economy seat.

Additionally, while there seems to be many terms & conditions for this promotion, it is worth trying out to see if an open jaw or partner airline will give you the discount as well.

If you do not have enough points in your United account and you plan on taking advantage of this pretty great promotion, you can always transfer your Continental miles (for free) or if you have a Chase Ultimate Rewards account. Chase Ultimate Rewards account transfer to both Continental and United at a 1:1 ratio and is one of the best transfer options (that and Hyatt I’d say).

I have gotten it to work with stopovers, open-jaw, or one of each. It does not work with partner airlines (except CO of course).

The downside is the stopover would need to be in the U.S. since there are no intra-European CO or UA flights that are not on partners.
