I was just playing around on Kayak trying to find a memorial day destination for me and Mr. Deals. I was originally looking into Costa Rica and when putting in “San Jose,” it came back with $220 roundtrip! I was shocked and almost booked the flight without even running it by the husband, before realizing it used San Jose, California, NOT San Jose, Costa Rica – shucks! Oh well.

But… with that I discovered that Virgin America has some unbelievable fares between these two destinations – $110 each way between New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO). I put in many arbitrary dates between the beginning of March and mid-June and found many dates offering these low fares.

And to top it off, I found a 20% off code in my email, so that brings each way down to $90. So what do you think, Pacific Coast Highway vacation or Costa Rica?!

    United has had a similar fare out there for a while if you want the trip and the ability to collect useful points, too. :)

    @Seth – Thanks! However, for the days I am looking the cheapest United fare is $290 round-trip, and for the better time slot $310. Still a $70+ savings with Virgin. And if you can use the 20% off coupon code from awhile back, even better!

    Definitely Northern CA. My wife and I spent 5 days in Costa Rica (Guanacaste peninsula) and didn’t enjoy it that much. We are avid travelers and speak passable Spanish, so that wasn’t an issue, but we won’t be going back.

    Doesn’t seem like a comparable trip. Haven’t been to Costa Rica but have heard only positive things… I’ve been all over Latin America and haven’t been to a country that I did not like!

    Costa Rica gets my vote!

    I live in San Diego and love the entire West Coast, but it’s very, very different from Costa Rica.
    We actually flew r/t to Costa Rica from San Diego for $220 all in about two years ago! Not sure if it was a mistake fare, as I wasn’t really in the points game at that point…just a cheapskate!
    We have amazing memories of that trip and really recommend it. The Arenal area is gorgeous, as is Manuel Antonio (tho it is upscale, not rugged or authentically Costa Rica)
