Post #20 compliments of Mr. Deals…

Now I was getting a little sick of Mrs. Deals bragging about how much fun she was having frolicking around Spain on a “business trip” so I decided to go book a nice little “business trip” on my own. That’s right folks, Mr. Deals is off to Switzerland and Mrs. Deals had no part in booking it!

Truth be told this is a business trip and I found out a bit last minute given that I leave on Friday. Mrs. Deals is bummed though because unfortunately she won’t be able to join me. We actually may cross paths in JFK as she returns from Spain, which is good because this trip would extend our 2+ week long separation to almost exactly 3 weeks! That’s a lot of time not talking about points, miles and our next vacation! So given that we’ll be bumping into each other in the airport, my plan is to say hola, grab the international converter and say adios (hopefully her Spanish has improved from this trip). Don’t worry, I will give her a kiss too.
So back to my trip. I’m going to have about a day and a half to explore. I’ll be flying into Geneva and the conference is in Montreux. My plan is to hop the train to Montreux from Geneva as I’m told it’s beautiful. If anyone has any good recommendations of what to see or do in a short time, throw them my way. The next 2.5 days will be filled with conference events, networking and I’m sure some fine dining (I’ll take any restaurant recommendations as well).
Don’t worry, I expect to deliver a full trip report upon my return and potentially while I’m there. Mrs. Deals will probably be on my case for every detail so I’ll be keeping notes throughout.
Next post from Switzerland!

I don’t know the train time from Geneva, but my favorite location in Switzerland is the Lauterbrunen valley. Walk the valley or take longer hikes, and see the spectacular underground and normal waterfalls. Take the gondola to Murren, and, if the weather is clear, the heart in your throat view from the Schtilthorn.

If you can make a trip to Zurich, I’d recommend taking a round trip boat ride from Zurich until the end of Lake into Schmerikon. The boat stops on a number towns including Rapperswil, known for its medieval castle. If I remember correctly, our tour guide mentioned that a number of celebrities live here too. Relax and enjoy the beautiful view along the lake.
If Zurich is too far, go and stroll around Lucerne where you can go to Lion Monument, Chapel Bridge, Town Hall. They are all within walking distance.

Or if you want to stay local to Montreaux, Lausanne is just 20 mins west of Montreaux by bus. Make sure you buy the proper bus ticket before boarding. I saw one unlucky tourist was fined by inspector (randomly get on the bus) for not having the proper bus ticket.

spend your half-day by going to the Château de Chillon (www.chillon.ch/en/) which is one of the most beautiful castles in europe. right on the water. you can get there by bus (number 201) from montreux in 15 minutes or so. http://www.vmcv.ch/ for info but it’s in french.
then spend the remaining day in geneva. walk around the lake and the old town (vielle ville), the shopping area between the lake and the old town “les rues bas”, the university park and place neuve. A walk through carouge is nice and you can walk there or take the tram.
if you want suggestions on where to eat and drink, let me know. i spent 27 years of my life there and i know a few places.

The best fish I’ve ever had in my life was in Geneva. It was lake fish I believe perch. They are famous for this fish. Almost every cafe and restaurant has it.

The flowers should be in full bloom now. It’s a beautiful city. Enjoy
