New York City’s restaurant week is returning July 16th through August 10th. While I am actually not a huge restaurant week person, it is a great opportunity to eat at a high-end NYC restaurant for cheap (relatively speaking for these NYC restaurants). You can get a 3-course meal for $24.07 during lunch or $35.00 during dinner. Saturdays are excluded and not all restaurants participate on Sundays.

a coupon for a restaurantNow the real perk comes into play with an American Express promotion. Eat at 4 different participating restaurants, use the same registered American Express credit card, and get a $20 statement credit. The terms state that each transaction must be of $24 or more (exuding beverages, gratuities, and taxes). I am also 99% confident that you will still get the statement credit if you do not actually participate in the restaurant week menu, but just dine at the restaurant during the promotional time frame. As long as you have a card transaction of $24 or more at 4 restaurant week restaurant’s, the credit is yours. There really is no way for American Express to know if this was a restaurant week dine or just a regular menu visit. Now the trick is to see if gift cards will trigger the statement credit?! If you try it out, let me know.

You can check out all the participating restaurants and register your American Express card here.

Can purchases across multiple cards on the same account be combined for this promotion? My wife has a card on my Amex account. She and I each have separate overnights in NYC during this period. Can we each eat twice to score the promo?

@bex – You must use the same card all 4 times. If you have the same card in two different names that will work. Or one of you can give each other your card and see if you can use it at the restaurant.

@bex and – Amex unlike many other Visa and MC cards issues additional cards on the same account with a different account number. So, technically speaking, family members have different cards even if the bill is ultimately paid by one person.

@yana The different number on each card is a feature of Amex that I really like and use. I actually have two cards in my own name as it makes tracking project expenses very easy. I was just hoping that someone had experienced Amex treating all the charges to the account as qualifying and would share that result.

Hi dealswelike, thanks for the heads-up, I just registered! Do you know if “use the same card all 4 times” include any dining on Saturdays, even though I just order from the regular menu? I know participating restaurants usually don’t offer Restaurant Week menus on Saturdays.

@WT – I have a hunch it will work. I am really not sure how Amex will be able to distinguish if you ate the restaurant week menu or a regular menu. However, maybe charges that are put through on Saturday’s wont be included. I have a feeling it will still count, but not 100% positive.
