We’ve seen some semi-decent American Express promotions recently, however, they were targeted to very specific cities and excluded a majority of the population. However, when I was at my local Sushi restaurant this afternoon, I pulled up Foursquare to see if there were any new promotions, and viola – $5 off a $10 purchase using my synced American Express credit card. I then noticed then there were probably 20 or so restaurants in my local area with this same offer. With some quick research and then a later post by MilesQuest, it has come to my attention that there is yet another national wide American Express / Foursquare promotion. More FREE money for all!

Currently I am only seeing this offer via Foursquare and not any other forms of social media. For those that have yet to use one of these easy free money opportunities, the process is easy:

  • Step 1: Sync your American Express credit card with Foursquare. If you have yet to get on the American Express bandwagon, I strongly suggest it you will probably get your annual fee paid off in no time with these many free money promotions.
  • Step 2: Check in to your local merchant via Foursquare. With this promotion you must make the purchase within 24 hours of checking in, so I suggest waiting until you are at the merchant to actually do this.
  • Step 3: Use your synced American Express credit card. Just make sure the purchase is at least $10 or more.

Since I have lunch and dinner quite often at many participating merchants, I will report back shortly if this works multiple times at different merchants. I have a feeling not, but you never know. My local nail salon is a participating merchant as well, so this is by no means limited to just food.

There is also another promotion at select restaurants participating in Restaurant Week where you can get $5 off a $24+ purchase. Again, you must check in to the restaurant to register for this promotion. These seems to be different then the promotion I highlighted last week where you get $20 off when dining at 4 participating Restaurant Week restaurants. Luckily, the two promotions can be combined, so more free money with NYC Restaurant Week!

    Thanks for the heads-up, once again, on these deals. For those of us that haven’t done this before with Foursquare (I don’t have an account yet), could you possibly provide a walk-through on how exactly to sync/link our Amex to our foursquare account? It would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks for all your great info as always. Did you ever find out if we can use the same checkin deal multiple times at the same merchant?? Or is it just once per merchant?

    @GolferWC – I used the $5 off $10 promo yesterday and now all the participating merchants with that promo no longer appear on my foursquare account under specials. I believe it might just be a one time promo in general.
