US Airways has announced yet another 100% bonus promotion for all purchased miles. While not as good as the October 100% promotion on shared miles, this is still great for those who did not partake or need to top off some miles. Even if you took advantage of the October promo, you can still take advantage of this one as well. The number of miles you can purchase is capped at 50,000 thus giving you a total of 100,000 miles. While I do not personally recommend purchasing miles, there are times when this exact deal can actually be in your favor.

Terms:

  • Earn a 100% bonus on all purchased miles up to 50,000 miles
  • Promotion runs through November 30, 2012
  • Miles cost 3.5 cents each (plus taxes and fees)
  • Your US Airways account must be at least 12 days old (if you do not have one, create one now, and then you will be good to go to purchase these miles in 12 days)
  • Purchase miles here

Should you take advantage of this promotion?

While there is no cut and dry answer, this promotion could be great for some of you. Those who primarily redeem for domestic travel will most likely not see the value, but for those that desire business and first class on international flightsthis could be a great deal!

Typically, miles are sold for $0.035, but with this promotion you can think of each mile costing $0.0175. If you go all in, the 100,000 miles will cost you $1,881.25. These 100,000 miles can be used for a round-trip business class ticket from the US to Europe. Purchasing this ticket will typically cost you at least $3,000 (and that is on the real conservative side probably). Remember though, you will not earn miles when redeeming, so there is that opportunity cost as well.

You can check out the US Airways award chart here to see the number of miles needed for each route. This could also be a great opportunity to take advantage of their discounted off peak awards. You can travel from the US to Europe (based on availability) next year January 15-February 28 for 35,000 miles in coach ($677.25 with this promotion – not the best deal) or 60,000 miles in business ($1,128.75 with this promotion – great deal for a business class seat!). Also remember that if you have the US Airways branded credit card you’ll get 5,000 miles off your roundtrip flight. Award seats are capacity controlled, so just make sure to look up seat availability prior to purchasing any points.

I will personally be opting out of this promotion as I have no need. This promotion seems to appear at least every other month, so if you have no immediate need, you can always hold off till the next time the promotion runs (assuming it will) or for the 100% share promotion.
