Another blog post from Mr. Deals…

I’m curious, what does everyone out there do when it snows? I can look out my window and see kids playing making snowmen, sledding down the closed street, and folks even going cross country skiing. Meanwhile I look at Facebook and Twitter and see all these people bragging about being in southern California and other sunny places laughing at those of us covered in snow. Then there’s the occasional travel enthusiast that somehow seems to get that last flight out to some tropical destination and rubs it in everyones face with a picture of a cocktail and a beach chair (I’m looking at you other travel bloggers).

I absolutely LOVE snow. I mean there are times I would take a blizzard over the warm sun and a beautiful beach (Mrs. Deals is definitely the opposite here). As soon as I see snow, I think snowboarding. Slight problem, I live in NYC. But that’s ok, I can make do.

Well this blizzard was no different. I was practically drooling looking out the window. All I could think about was how and when I was going to get to the mountains. Luckily, I have a small crew of folks in the city that share the same passion, so as long as the roads are open I can get out of the city and make way to the higher elevations.

Now, Mrs. Deals is always encouraging me to head to the mountains (sometimes she likes to join, but only on powder days). The thing she is always focused on is deals. I don’t blame her, winter sports are damn expensive. This year I decided against doing any 3 packs of tickets or those discount cards (I tend to go to different places all the time). I also don’t typically get a season pass simply because I don’t get out enough to justify it. So I’m definitely limiting my options on discounts.

There are three resources that are my go to every time I am looking to get out on snow. Working advantage (if you have access to it – if not just find a friend that works for a big company), Costco (again find a friend with a membership) and Liftopia.com. Costco typically stocks tickets for local mountains which can work out really well for a last minute excursion.

With those three, I’m pretty much able to secure some sort of discounted ticket which works for me. If anyone has other ways of getting discounted tickets, please share as I’m sure readers would love to know.

On that note, I’m spending the day on the mountain. And while some of you may be enjoying some sunshine, to me there’s nothing better than a hot chocolate after some fresh turns in some powder, even if it is on the east coast (one day I’ll convince Mrs. Deals to move west).
