Tomorrow night we have been told this will DROP from the current 50,000 points to a new 30,000 point new card bonus with spend!

I have a friend who is a travel agent. I was shocked to learn that years ago the terms from all the airlines changed and they are not paid anything by the airlines for booking tickets. So think about that if you use their service and see a small charge. Now this is not the case outside the USA. There, agents can get paid.
Why bring this up? I was doing some research and I came across the travel part of Delta’s web site call World Agent Direct.
Without actually being a travel agent you have limited access to the site and many of the links simply toss you back to the proper DELTA.com site. The AF site has almost nothing without access codes. But, in typical Italian style, there is a ton of info wide open on their site as you can see.
Anyway – not much info here that will apply to us as day to day Delta travelers but I thought it would be fun to see what is out on the web when you know where to look! – René

This is a great question. There is only one time when the answer is simple and black & white. If, for whatever reason like starting your 24 month new card bonus clock, you are going to close all your Membership Rewards cards (or one going to a single account), you MUST get the points out first or they will be lost forever! End of story. Also if you are ever targeted with the AMEX Financial Review it may be wise to move the points out as if you do not “win” the review, the points will be gone, but you can move them out during the process.
If you are not going to close the card then there should be no “pressing” reason to move your points anywhere else. Many times during each year there are good bonuses of 30-50% for sending them to many airlines. Now if you are short some miles and want to book seats right now, that is also a good reason to transfer some, but not more, than you need now. I have done very well with this card as the $200 airline incidentals credit, $100 towards GOES, lounge access and more + 25,000 points is a very good value and should be a card to include in your next card churn if you are planning on one soon.
The same thing goes most of the time with the SPG points earned from either the personal or the business flavor of the cards.Your SPG points will NOT go away if you cancel your SPG AMEX card. However, SPG points do expire if you do not have activity in the account, like a stay. You can also every month take advantage of the audience reward trivia and get 10 free points to keep the account alive as now any activity counts! The answers are even provided here at MilePoint in this thread. So no rush to get those miles out until you need them.
Lastly with SPG it is important to remember the bonus they give you. For every 20,000 you transfer to an airline, they give you 5,000 bonus miles so you net out 25,000 at the other end. This is a great value and one of the reasons SPG points are so good. So I hope that covers the question asked and feel free to shoot off any more if this is not clear. – René

Boy has the new rule made a ton of people or companys either mad or happy. Now I have never ever been on a Spirit plane nor do I ever plan on ever getting on one. I hate that they charge more than Ryan air even does for everything. I bet if they had the oxygen mask deployed in an emergency situation, they would ask for your credit card “before you assisted someone else traveling with you!”
I decided to jump on Delta and see what a trip to see my mom in Sweden would price out at and look what I found:
Wow only $223 round trip South Bend to Gothenburg Sweden! Really? But is Delta doing a “Spirit Air” move and hiding income in the cost breakdown? Look at the International Surcharge line. That is not a “tax”. This goes to Delta to cover fuel costs. Hummm… And Delta many times accuses us “travel hackers” of gaming the system?
Every single day I see more and more reasons to collect points and the value of points. And when noted travel advocates are telling people points are worthless or worse it make me even more happy that you and I get this game and will be “turning left” as we enter the plane for our next flight hopefully for FREE! – René
If we look at the Delta.com web site we see the following SizeCheck rules (the old SizeWise btw)
- For carry-on bags your bag must:
- Not exceed 45 inches (length+width+height), or 115 cm.
- Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22″x14″x9″, or 56x36x23 cm).
- Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.
With checked bag prices going up year by year, and waiting for bags can take a long time, and if you have a tight connection you may make it but your bags might not – what is a Delta traveler to do? Also, if your bag is too big with flights always going out full, gate agents are more and more frequently enforcing the SizeCheck to make sure your bag can go on-board!
My bride and I have his and hers of this little puppy. The Traveler’s Choice Rome 21″ Hardside Rolling Carry-On Upright (my link to Amazon btw). It is outside the “official” regulation size from Delta but does fit inside the “SizeCheck” metal box at the boarding gates as you can see below. On the CRJ-100/200′s you can fit ONE under the seat but not TWO! It is very light and it is shocking just how much you can fit inside these little guys. The wheels are quiet and roller blade style. The handle is strong and sturdy.
The way we do trips with this is I have my laptop backpack and my wife has her “big” purse. Now I am not telling everyone to go get this bag and that it is the best one ever. For a bag under $50 it works great for us. Either way, it seems that Delta is going to more and more enforce the carry-on bag size rules and if you want to avoid having to check your bag, this kind of bag is one you will want to seriously start to look into! – Rene
Have you had a chance to read over the new press release from Delta Air Lines about earnings for 2011? Did anything stand out to you? One thing did for me. Look at the part highlighted below:
This one line does not tell the whole story of where the cost savings came from. But it made think back to this Frontline piece about outsourcing aircraft maintenance:
Delta aircraft are aging fast. The new seat improvements are great and it does bring “new life” to the older planes since the average age is now 15+ years according to the Delta web site. Some 767 & MD’s are over 20+ year old now.
But these kinds of improvements are not the same as new planes. With an older fleet maintenance should be a priority I would think. Can Delta make it a priority and also save money? As we see in the report Delta is saving money and the stock price was up over 6% yesterday. Time will tell if this is a good choice or not.

If they don’t tell me at the front desk I’ve been upgraded, I’ve asked about large meeting halls in the area and tell them I’m looking for a place to hold a regional meeting and need lodging also. They usually put me on a top floor after that, to bait me in. It’s all business expenses for me, so I’m not really out anything. It also lets me get a feel for the area, which is a better indicator than just calling places.
