All it does is a) inconvenience all the innocent passengers & crew and b) achieve their goal of disruption, production of fear/and or knee-jerk reactions, and c) let them know what to expect in regards to responses, therefore giving them a chance to exploit less guarded 'targets' as you mentioned. Can you imagine we FAs trying to stop a mother & child getting up to use a bathroom in the final hour of flight? Just try telling a 3 year old he has to 'hold it'- and I KNOW you know what that would be like! Totally agree.
