There were two different seating configurations for Delta’s Boeing 737-200s flying the skies back in 1987, one of which I previously posted. Here is the second version for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
The seat map appearing below sports 8 seats in first class and 107 in coach, which was the most common dual-class layout for this short- to medium-haul workhorse.
Notice the odd first class row numbering. Hmm.
In first class you’d find me in 2D 3D, and in coach I’d certainly be keen on 10A/F if there were indeed as much legroom as shown.

Back in the 1970s, United Airlines operated “Reno Commuter” flights predominantly between Reno and Elko, Nevada, with further flying to Ely and Salt Lake City. Here is the Boeing 727-100 operated on the route for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
This single-class aircraft seated 112 passengers and offered a luxurious 36 inches of pitch between most rows. Eat your heart out Economy Plus!
The darker, burnt orange (or brown, if you will) rows appearing on the map below from 15 to 21 was the smoking section.
Seat 2C looks to be the best in the house, though I’d probably opt for something a bit further back and definitely alongside a window, such as 5A or 5F.

It’s time for another Vintage Airline Seat Map and I’ve selected a Continental Airlines MD-80 (Super 80) seen flying the skies in 1987.
According to PlaneSpotters.net, Continental had about 42 in its fleet and the version appearing below offered 16 seats in first class and 130 in coach.
Sitting up front is always fun on takeoff, as it’s so quiet given how far away you are from the engines. As such, I’d opt for 2F in first and 6A or 7A in coach.

It’s time for another Vintage Airline Seat Map and I’ve selected a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-300 from 1987.
I previously posted Delta’s 737-200 seat map, which offered 12 seats in first class unlike the eight here. Coach on this bird seated 120 passengers.
In first class, you’d find me in 2D as I preferred – and still do today – the right-hand side of these small cabins to avoid a direct view into the galley. And in coach I’d be keen on a window seat up front, likely not the bulkhead.

Back in November I posted the pre-deregulation version of American’s 727-200 with 16 seats in first class and 111 in coach. Those were the days of generous legroom in coach, almost being equivalent to that of first class.
Here, now, is how American’s -200s changed in the post-deregulation era for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
One row of first class was removed giving this version 12 seats up front. And seat pitch was significantly tightened and rows added in back creating a cabin holding 138 passengers.
My very first flight ever was on this configuration of American’s 727-200 in 1982. I sat in 7A behind my parents and grandmother in the bulkhead seats in row 6. If this bird were flying today, I’d probably also opt for a seat near the front in coach, and 4F would be ideal in first class.

Here’s the last Vintage Airline Seat Map of 2012 – a high-density United Airlines Boeing 747-100 seen flying the skies in 1998. I was working for United at the time and recall it primarily doing turns from Chicago to Honolulu and back as UA1/UA2.
I had the pleasure of flying this configuration once from Chicago to Seattle in 1996. And as it so happened I was on N4724U, which was the same aircraft as flight 811 from Honolulu to Auckland on February 24, 1989 where sadly 9 passengers died as a result of a cargo door failure. Its registration at that time was N4713U.
First class offered 42 seats, 16 of which were upstairs. The row of six coach seats behind row 10 was used for crew rest, if I recall correctly. I’m a big fan of the nose of the 747, so you’d find me in row 2 or 3 up front. In 1996, I was in coach seat 46K. But I’d be keener on those two-seaters up in rows 19-21 if this bird were flying today.

I previously posted the all-coach Air Shuttle version of Eastern’s Airbus A300s, and here now was their standard two-class bird for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
Check out the pair of seats in row 10. Those were either fabulous or horrible seats, regardless of the fact that 10A didn’t recline. I wonder if the bulkhead behind row 4 was a wall or a soft partition?
You’d find me in row 2 or 3 in first class and 16 or 17 in coach (there were a couple of “missing windows” in rows 12-15, though this map fails to identify them).

I’ve got DC-10s on my mind this week having posted a video on Tuesday showing a “floater” landing by a United DC-10 at LAX years ago. And I’m jealous of a fellow #avgeek who’s flying a KLM MD-11 on Sunday. So… here’s a Continental Airlines DC-10-30 for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
I posted another Continental DC-10-30 seat map a while back that was labeled exclusively as “South Pacific.” The configuration appearing below is labeled as “Domestic/South Pacific” with only three fewer seats, but with some unique differences.
Primarily, a few galley and lavatory locations swapped from the other configuration, causing the cabin layout in first class and business class to vary. Each version still seated 24 in first and 31 in business, however. Coach saw the 3-seat reduction in this layout.
I’d be keen on 3A in first, 10A/L in business and 15A/L in coach.

It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that Boeing 777s have been flying for more than 17 years. It still seems like a brand new airplane to me. And since I’m in an inaugural mood this week from my 787 ride, here’s United’s initial layout of their 777-200s for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
United was the launch customer of the 777 with the inaugural flight occurring on June 5, 1995. First Class seated 12 passengers in a 2-2-2 configuration with 64 inches of pitch between rows. Connoisseur Class offered 49 seats in the 2-3-2 layout with 49 inches of pitch. (As a point of reference, United’s non-flat bed 777s currently flying have 55 inches of pitch in Business Class.) And economy class seated 231 passengers in the 2-5-2 configuration with 31-33 inches of pitch (this was pre-Economy Plus).
I loved row two in First, row nine in Connoisseur and the first several rows of coach.

Here’s a retro one from US Air for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps. While this particular map is from 1987, US Air’s fleet of BAC 1-11s (British Aircraft Corporation “One-Elevens”) originally flew for Mohawk Airlines from 1965 to 1972.
In 1972, Allegheny Airlines acquired Mohawk, and at the turn of deregulation in 1979, Allegheny rebranded as US Air.
This single-class configuration seated 79 passengers, had one lavatory and I’m sort of shocked to see a closet and other “storage” denoted as “ST.” I’m surprised US Air didn’t remove the forward closet to squeeze in two more seats in the late 80s.
Obviously, 9C would be preferable for a solo traveler and 9D & 9E for a couple. Seats 17A, E and F must have been rather uncomfortable.
