April 1st kicks off with a cruel joke from Chase.  Many of the big bonus point offers in the Ultimate Rewards Mall have dropped precipitously.  Below are some of my findings this morning when logged in with my old Ink Bold and my Sapphire Preferred (note that you may see different results with a Chase Freedom).

First, the good news:

  • Office Depot: 10X Ink Bold; only 4X Sapphire Preferred
  • Kohl’s: Still at 10X for both cards
  • Nordstrom: 10X Sapphire Preferred (only for 3 days)
  • Drugstore.com: 10X Sapphire Preferred; only 5X with Ink Bold

The exciting news here is the Office Depot 10X opportunity.  Since the New Ink Bold offers 5X automatically when used in office supply stores, you will get a total of 15X when making Office Depot purchases with your Ink card through the UR mall!  Last I checked, though, there were no merchant or bank gift cards available online (also the T&C says “not eligible on purchases of gift cards”).  If they begin to offer free after rebate products, though, this could be a big win.  It might even be worth filling out rebate cards for 15X!

And now the bad news (very bad):

  • Staples: down to 2X (from 4X).  Noooooooo!!!!!  The perfect PPM may still be perfect, but for fewer points.  And for those of you who have been buying gift cards with your Ink card for a total of 9X, the total is now down to 7X.  Nooooooo!!!!
  • Barnes & Noble: down to 2X (from 10X).  No longer can you buy ultimate rewards points for less than a pennyNooooooo!!!!
  • Home Depot: down to 4X (from 10X).
  • Magazines.com: down to 25X (from 40X).
  • Sears: down to 4X (from 5X on the Ink).
  • Lands End: down to 2X (from 5 or 6X)

I’ve written quite a bit in the past about Magazines.com offering 40 points per dollar through the Ultimate Rewards Mall.  Most of these posts were reports of attempts to double dip by buying and then using Magazine.com gift cards.  Initially, a half double dip was possible: Magazines.com gave 40X for gift card purchases and then another 20X when using the gift cards, for a total of 60X overall.  Unfortunately, that loophole quickly closed and that was the end of the Magazines.com double dip.

40X is still an awesome return for magazine purchases, but if you’re like me you already get too many magazines.  One can never have too many books though!

Buying Books

In the Ultimate Rewards Mall, Magazines.com terms & conditions state explicitly that book purchases are not awarded bonus points:

image

Luckily, this restriction is very easy to get around.  Simply buy yourself an e-gift card first and then use it to buy a book.  Gift card purchases are awarded 40X:

So, if you’re shopping for books give this a try!  Note that while their prices are not competitive with Amazon.com, you might be able to get Magazines.com to price match.

As of this morning (Feb 1), there are a number of changes to the payouts from Chase’s Ultimate Rewards Mall for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Bold (note that when logging into the mall for other Chase cards, you will have different offers).

Let’s look at some key bonus rates for the Sapphire Preferred and Ink Bold:

  • Avis: 5X
  • Barnes & Noble: 10X (up from 7X)
  • Drugstore.com: 5X (down from 10X!)
  • Groupon: 0 (has been missing from the UR Mall since January)
  • Hotels.com: 4X
  • HP: 3X (down from 5X)
  • Kohl’s: 10X
  • Magazines.com: 40X
  • Office Depot: 5X
  • Sears: 4X (Same as before. Boo!  I was hoping Sears would go up!)
  • Staples: 4X (down from 5X)
  • Target: 3X (down from 5X)

Comparing to predictions

Last night, I made the following predictions:

  • Staples.com will stay at 5X
  • Target.com will decrease from 5X to 3X
  • HP will stay at 5X
  • Drugstore.com will decrease to 8X
  • Sears will increase to 6X or 7X

How did I do?  I got Target exactly right.  I also correctly predicted that Drugstore.com would go down, but it actually went all the way down to 5X instead of my predicted 8X.  Against my predictions, Staples and HP both went down, and Sears stayed the same.  So, I batted 1 (or maybe 1.5) out of 5.  Not very impressive!

Analysis of Changes

Ick.  Most of the changes are not so good.  Sears staying at 4X is a big disappointment.  Staples dropping from 5X to 4X slightly lowers to value of the Ink Bold double dip I’ve been writing a lot about lately (in fact, I need to re-write a new post that I had ready to go).  Office Depot at 5X doesn’t help too much as their terms and conditions explicitly say that gift cards are excluded (but it’s a great deal if you actually want to buy something from Office Depot).  Also Groupon is still missing from the site altogether.  On the plus side, it’s great to see Barnes & Noble back up to 10X.  I’m really pleasantly surprised, as well, to see Magazines.com staying at 40X and Kohl’s staying at 10X!  Also with Avis at 5X and Hotels.com at 4X there could be some great opportunities to save on travel and double-dip with other promotions.

What’s Next?

Virtually every shopping portal, including the Ultimate Rewards Mall, is heavily promoting Valentine’s Day related merchants right now.  So, my next bold prediction is that rates will change again on Feb 15th.  Let’s hope for some good news then!

Through the Ultimate Rewards Mall, Magazines.com currently offers 40 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent.  Ever since lovetofly reported on Milepoint that he partially succeeded in double dipping Magazines.com, I’ve been trying to find a way to turn that 40X bonus into 80X by buying and redeeming gift cards through the online mall.  Initially, both lovetofly and I partially succeeded: we received full points for our gift card purchases, but only half points for our magazine purchases (using the gift cards).

Double Dip RIP

I tried purchasing magazines with one year subscriptions (rather than the two year subscriptions originally purchased), then I tried purchasing magazines through a second portal, then I tried sending my wife a magazines.com gift card so that she could redeem it through the Ultimate Rewards Mall.  Unfortunately, all of these experiments failed.  I have consistently received 40X points for purchasing e-gift cards, but not since the first experiment have I (or my wife) received points for using gift cards.  So, I’m officially closing down the magazines.com double dip experiments.  Unless someone comes up with a new secret twist, I’m going to assume that the original double dip was a fluke or a bug that has since been fixed.

Still a Good Deal

Despite not being able to double dip, it’s worth noting that 40 points per dollar is an incredible bonus by itself.  Magazines.com will match competitor prices (hat tip to WillRunForMiles), so if you’re in the market for magazines, you don’t have to live with paying extra for those extra points.  If you’re interested in books, they carry those too.  Note that the terms and conditions prohibit getting points for books, but you can circumvent that very easily by buying yourself a gift card first, and then use that to buy books!

Buying Points

40 points per dollar is an interesting bonus amount because buying magazines.com gift cards is equivalent buying Ultimate Rewards points for 2.5 cents each.  2.5 cents happens to be the same price that Chase will charge to sell you points directly!  If you buy directly from Chase, you have the advantage of getting points instantly, but you are limited to 5000 per month.  If you buy indirectly through magazines.com you will have to wait up to a month to get the points, but there is no limit to how many you can buy.

Improving the Deal

If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card, you will get an annual 7% bonus on top of any points received from the Ultimate Rewards Mall.  So, the 40 points per dollar becomes 42.8 points per dollar.  This translates into buying points for 2.3 cents each, which is less than Chase charges!  Next, if you use your gift cards to donate magazines and books to schools, libraries, or hospitals, you might be able to itemize these charitable gifts on your taxes and save as much as 30%.  If so, that would lower the purchase price all the way to 1.6 cents per point.  (Note: I am not an accountant so please do not take anything I say as tax advice!)

Analysis

If you’re in the market for magazines or books, I doubt you could do much better than this.  Go through the Ultimate Rewards Mall, and buy yourself a magazines.com e-gift card.  Then, go through the mall again to buy what you want (you never know, they might mess up and give you double credit!).  You will get at least 40 points per dollar, which is a terrific bonus.  At the fair trading price of 1.31 cents, a 40 point bonus is equivalent to a 52.4% rebate!

If you’re interested in buying Ultimate Rewards points regardless of whether you get books or magazines, this might be a good option for you.  No matter what, I wouldn’t recommend buying points unless your are sure you can redeem them at a higher value than what you paid.  If you need the points immediately, then your only choice is to buy directly from Chase.  If you don’t think you’ll need them for a while, I’d recommend waiting for better opportunities.  If you need the points soon, and can afford to wait as much as a month to get the points credited, then by all means jump on this opportunity!

Magazines.com

  • My attempt to double dip by buying gift cards through the Ultimate Rewards Mall and then using the gift card through Big Crumbs failed.  Big Crumbs reported 0 cash back for the transaction.
  • I was ready to throw in the towel on Magazines.com when a reader named Anita posted comments on several Frequent Miler pages.  She may have found a way to double dip: have one person buy a gift card for another person and have the second person buy magazines.  Both would go through the Ultimate Rewards Mall to make these purchases.  I’ll try this myself soon and report back.
  • Anita also reported a conversation with Chase in which they asserted that magazines that auto-renew will receive points (despite the T&C implying otherwise).  As others have speculated, Chase says that you will get bonus points for the original purchase, but when the magazines renew you won’t get additional bonus points.  This is great news since many magazines are set to automatically renew.

Nook Giveaway

  • Look for a post on Monday detailing how to enter for a chance to win the Nook I wrote about!

Groupon

  • Groupon seems to have disappeared from the Ultimate Rewards Mall.  Suddenly those Groupon Getaways don’t look nearly as appealing as they did a few days ago.  Sigh.

Kiva DO

  • If you’re interested in attending the Kiva DO March 9-12, please read about it here.  If you decide you want to attend, please post your decision to that thread as well.

Staples

  • Has anyone received results yet from buying gift cards at Staples.com through the Ultimate Rewards Mall?  This can be a great triple dip opportunity if it works!  Dip 1 = UR Mall 5X points; Dip 2 = 5X for Chase Ink Bold; Dip 3 = Use the gift card for more purchases through an online Mall (multiplier would depend on which merchant you buy from)!

  • My double dip experiment with the Aadvantage eShopping mall worked!  I received 10 points per dollar for making a Sears.com purchase using gift cards.  I had bought those gift cards for 10 points per dollar through the Ultimate Rewards Mall on December 9th, so I earned a combined 20 points per dollar.  Even with the UR Mall at only 4 or 5 points, I think this is the best current Sears double-dip option (e.g. buy gift cards through the UR Mall, use gift cards through the Aadvantage mall).
  • The Magazines.com double dip through the UR mall seems to be a bust.  Whereas I reported earlier receiving half credit for purchases of 2 year magazine subscriptions, I haven’t received any credit (yet) for a few purchases of 1 year subscriptions.  I’m beginning to think that someone at magazines.com spotted the error and closed the loophole.  Next experiment: buy gift cards through the Ultimate Rewards Mall, but redeem them through a different portal.
  • This is just a reminder that MileagePlus shopping is running a promotion until the end of the month where you can get 500 bonus miles for a purchase of $75 or more.  If you make one purchase of about $100, this is like an extra 5 miles per dollar on top of the bonus points you would get anyway through this shopping portal.

A couple of quick updates:

American Express OPEN savings for gift card purchases:Several days ago I wrote about leveraging American Express OPEN savings to buy gift cards in my post about how to maximize points at Amazon.com, but I hadn’t actually tried it at that point.  So, I ran out and bought a $100 Amazon gift card at OfficeMax using my Amex business card. This morning I logged into my Amex account and saw that $5 in savings was now listed in my OPEN report! This means that I’ve verified this technique.

Magazines.com 80X: A contributor on Milepoint reports successfully double dipping at magazines.com through the Ultimate Rewards Mall for a combined 80 points per dollar! I’m working on replicating this and will hopefully have more news and details soon.
UPDATE: the same contributor just posted that he had misread the results.  He only received the original 40 points.

In a recent post (Ultimate Rewards Mall Updates) I reported that, through the Ultimate Rewards Mall, Magazines.com is currently offering 40 points per dollar.  I mentioned that I was going to try to “double dip” by purchasing an e-gift card and then using the gift card to purchase magazines.  Here are the results:

The Double Dip Worked!  Sort-of…

In December, a reader, “LoveToFly,” posted in Milepoint that he successfully double dipped with Magazines.com through the Ultimate Rewards Mall. In his case, he received full points for the gift card purchase, but only half points for the magazine purchases.  I had the exact same experience!  When I look in my Ultimate Rewards Mall & Travel Earnings, I see a magazines.com transaction amount for exactly half of what I actually paid.  My guess of why this happened is that I ordered magazines with a 2 year subscription and, for some reason, was only credited for the first year.  Will I get another credit after a year is up?  Doubtful, but possible…

Test 2

I just kicked off another test where I purchased a magazine with just a one year subscription.  It will be several days before I know the results of this test, but I’m crossing my fingers…

Do it yourself details

Magazines.com lists the following important restrictions:

Special increased earnings now through 1/31/2012!

Magazine subscriptions that are automatically renewed are not eligible. Not eligible on the purchase of books.

So, if you’re interested in this double-dip, do the following:

  • Make your purchases on or before 1/31/2012
  • Do not purchase books (at least not if you want double-dip credit)
  • Do not purchase magazines that are part of the “automatic renewal” plan.
  • I’d recommend waiting a day or so between buying the gift card and using the gift card.  I don’t know if this really matters, but it can’t hurt.

Buying Points

When buying magazine.com gift cards you get 40 points per dollar from the Ultimate Rewards Mall, 1 point per dollar from your credit card’s base spend, and 7% extra annual bonus if logged into your Chase Sapphire Preferred account when shopping the UR mall.  This adds up to 43.87 points per dollar, just for buying gift cards!  If you then spend the gift cards and get 20 points per dollar for the purchases, that will increase your total to 65.27 points per dollar!  And, if the option to buy 1 year subscriptions pans out, you would get a whopping 86.67 points per dollar!

If you get 65.27 points per dollar, that amounts to purchasing Ultimate Rewards points for 1.53 cents each.  This is more than the fair trading price of 1.31 cents, but depending upon your circumstances it might still make sense for you.  For comparison, if you buy points directly from Chase, you will be charged 2.5 cents each.

If you manage to get 86.67 points per dollar, that would amount to purchasing Ultimate Rewards points for 1.15 cents each!  This is well below the fair trading price of 1.31 cents, and a fantastic value.

What to do with the magazines?

Does anyone have suggestions?  Here are some of my thoughts:

  • Friends and family: let me know if you have your eyes on any magazines, I’ll happily gift them to you!
  • I’m thinking of calling local schools and libraries to see if they could use magazine donations.
  • Are there organizations that would buy magazine subscriptions for pennies on the dollar?

I don’t plan to go into this in a big way.  I’m not looking to become the pudding guy of magazines.  However, if the 80 point double dip pans out, I’m sure I’ll buy several hundred dollars worth!  How about you?

The Ultimate Rewards Mall is showing some changes for the beginning of 2012. Here is what I’ve found so far:

Sears drops to 4 points per dollar

Not only is Sears planning to close many Sears and Kmart stores, but they’ve also dropped the Ultimate Rewards Mall bonus points down to 4 points per dollar (previously 6). In the past 4 or 5 months, the bonus point amounts changed several times (10X, then 5X, then 6X, then 10X for one day, etc.) so I’d recommend waiting, if you can, before making Sears’ purchases to see if the bonus amount jumps up again.

Magazines.com jumps to 40 points per dollar

Magazines.com was previously 35 points per dollar so this isn’t a huge jump, but it’s an amazing bonus. The terms and conditions say that book purchases are not allowed, but you can get around that by buying a magazines.com e-gift card and then buying books with the gift card. I can confirm, though, that double-dipping doesn’t work for book purchases. However, with magazine purchases it might be possible. I just tried it tonight and will report back once I see what happens with my Ultimate Rewards activity. If we can find a reliable double-dip (that is a way to get 40X points for both buying and using gift cards) then we would get an unbeatable 80 points per dollar. Add in the Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s base points and 7% annual bonus, and you would get an unbelievable 86..67 points per dollar. That would mean that you could buy UR points for only 1.15 cents simply by buying magazines! Do I really think this will work? No. Am I hoping? You bet!

Barnes and Noble drops from 8X to 7X

Still a great deal even though the double dip doesn’t work here.

Staples is giving 5 points per dollar

If you have the new Chase Ink Bold you can get 5 points per dollar for office store purchases and then another 5 points per dollar by going through the UR mall!

Others worth noting:

  • Groupon is back to 12X (from 15X in December)
  • Kohl’s is still at 10X!
  • J Crew is at 5X
  • Target is at 5X
  • Home Depot is at 5X
