Bright lights, gambling, fountains, shows, taxi drivers who I swear use the fastest meters in the west – it can only be Las Vegas.

British Airways returned to Vegas a couple of years ago, operating a route from London Heathrow.

Well it seems BA want more of the leisure market, with services to commence from London Gatwick.

The service is schedule to begin on the 29th October, running as follows three times a week:

BA2277 DEPART LGW 11:30 ARRIVE LAS 14:05
BA2276 DEPART LAS 15:55 ARRIVE LGW 09:45+1

Operates from 29/OCT/2012
Operates Monday, Wednesday, Saturday both directions
Booked Equipment: Boeing 777, 3 Class Equipment

The plane is booked for Three-Class Equipment, operating Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller (Business, Premium Economy and Economy).

Those of you who want First Class, or a proper widebody can still use the London Heathrow to Las Vegas, operated with a Four Class 747-400 with BA First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller (First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy).

This also brings British Airways and Virgin Atlantic into direct competition on the same route.

Let the fireworks commence…

However, both sides are reminded of the following tag line if they’re going to fight in Vegas…

Well it seems someone some space at Tegel, with Lufthansa to commence services from Tegel to 49 destinations – including Manchester and Birmingham from the 3rd June.

As you all know, Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s opening was delayed due to safety issues. As such, Air Berlin’s and Lufthansa who had planned new major pushes from these airports didn’t know what was happening.

Lufthansa’s announcement matches Air Berlin’s announcement that they would be operating the new timetable from the old Tegel Airport.  However, expect some fluctuations in timings as they discover how everything is going to work for now.

How, is still something to be worked out due to the massive number of new movements at the old airport – considering Lufthansa is increasing its Berlin based aircraft to 15 from 9 planes.

Currently, both Lufthansa and Air Berlin are awaiting a new opening date for Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which is looking to slip even further.

And reading along the lines, I’m seeing March 2013 as the next opening date according to Berlin’s Mayor speaking to  Deutsche Welle.

Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, announced on Thursday that Berlin’s new international airport, which was scheduled to open on June 3, will not be in service until March 2013.

It makes the opening of LHR-T5 look on time.

More of the BER airport delay later as more details emerge.

No, not the Joss Whedon series, but British Airways has painted up another plane to deliver the Olympic Flame from Greece to the United Kingdom – and they’ve painted an Airbus A319 in a complete different scheme to the Olympic Doves that have been flying around.

Images – British Airways via Facebook

And I like the colours. It suits the plane nicely for the purpose it’s flying for.

The Firefly will be collecting the Olympic Flame from  from Athens to Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall on Friday May 18 as flight BA2012, to allow the Olympic Torch Relay to begin.

Malaysia Airlines are forging ahead with its membership of Oneworld, and is due to join the alliance towards the end of the year.

Already readying for their first Airbus A380 to be delivered, and have been creating codeshares with fellow Oneworld partners such as Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and Royal Jordanian.

For passengers, there is a new benifit – increased hand luggage allowances. Malaysia Airlines currently operate a 5kg hand luggage allowance in economy. This goes up by 2kg to 7kg. Business Class and First Class travellers will have an allowance of two pieces weighing up to 7kg each.

Bags must not measure more than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm. See http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/uk/en/book-and-plan/baggage/hand-baggage.html for the full gossip on what luggage fits where.

Now 2kg extra isn’t a lot (heck, I could pad out that with camera equipment and the laptop) – especially considering how other Oneworld members have differing hand luggage policies.

Still, it’s a step forward – a welcome one for those who live on hand luggage alone…

Immigration minister Damian Green has had it rough recently, with the chaos at the UK Border at various ports of entry – and rightly so after not ensuring enough manpower was available to process the visitors into the United Kingdom.

As the UK ramps up its border inspections thanks to a lack policy and a will from the Government to do deeper inspections, delays into the UK have increased both for European Economic Area passengers, but more painfully for Non-EEA passengers who have been forced to wait for 2 hours – and beyond at the UK Border.

Damian Green states:

“some queue levels at London’s Heathrow and Stansted airports are ‘not acceptable’”

And in other news, the blindingly obvious needs to be explained to people….

Anyway, the UK Border Agency is putting 480 Border staff on duty during the Olympics from its national cadre.

Meanwhile an extra 70  staff are being recruited for now – this recruitment round for originally for the new Heathrow T2 project. The aim is to have the staff in place after the Olympics, and in-time for the rush of new students coming into the UK to study for the inbound 2012/2013 academic year.

Fears exist that when the 480 staff disperse back to their normal roles and bases, queues will once again build up to unacceptable levels.

To help around Heathrow, Damian Green has stated that  16 mobile teams of 10 people were now employed at Heathrow to ensure staffing at immigration checks could be better focused on need.

There has been also been argument over how to measure a queue, as the UK Border Agency only measures from the time waiting in the immigration hall – and not from the back of the queue where normally a queue ends.

Perhaps this is just another government re-definition so the statistics look good for someone.

Complaints from the airlines include the long waits – some of which have tailed back to the gates, whilst the vast amount of unmanned immigration desks seem to be another problem.

However, until queues die down to the sub 25 minutes for EEA passengers, and sub 45 minutes for Non-EEA passengers, expect the (justified) moans to continue – and for watchers like me to continue to write about it.

Meanwhile, if you’ve been stuck in a queue for over the stated periods, you might want to drop a letter/email to the following to express your dissatisfaction:

The Rt Hon. Damian Green
Immigration Minister
The Home Office
Direct Communications Unit
2 Marsham Street
London
SW1P 4DF

You could also email your complaint to public.enquiries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk or  Telephone: 020 7035 4848 (09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday).

Because as much bluster that comes from the minster, the only way this will change is if people moan and moan loudly… and remind the Rt Hon. Damian Green that this is costing UK PLC Money… and lots of it.

BMI is currently running a 20% bonus Destination Miles promotion on purchases of miles.

Whilst in the past this was reasonably exciting, there is an interesting wrinkle on the horizon – the creation of a transfer tool from BMI Diamond Club to British Airways Avios.

So the idea is this:

  • Buy your miles
  • Wait till the 3rd July
  • Convert them to Avios

So why is this semi exciting?

Cost per mile, buying via BMI will be cheaper!

  • 24,000 miles through BMI costs £255
  • 24,000 Avios will set you back £399

Obviously, there are a few caveats – namely you haven’t brought your allocation of BMI miles just yet.  You can buy lower quantities of miles and get a bonus pro-rata, however the numbers above include the £15 purchasing fee. Therefore your value per mile is diminished if you buy lower amounts.

For those needing a top up before the end of Star Alliance redemptions, this is probably the best chance to do it, as your deadline for ticketing those redemptions is 30th May.

For those with the Chase 100,000 Avios bonus who scoff at this promotion, a little note. The best UK credit cards will get 20,000 miles (which happen to be BMI and AA – only of first application). Whilst the Llyods TSB Avios card seemed reasonable, there were some major issues with in

Meanwhile the BA Credit Cards by American Express have comparatively poor sign-up bonuses at the moment – the “free” version gets a massive 1,000 Avios, whilst the paid version gets you 6,000 Avios.

So if promos like this turn up, take them and use them whilst you can!

Head to https://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/loyalty-programmes/diamond-club/earning-miles/buying-miles/buying-miles.aspx – and remember to log into your Diamond Club Account.

See – I can talk about airline points occasionally ;)

In another bid to love its customers, Ryanair is to close its website for upgrade maintenance during the upcoming weekend.

The downtime will be for the following:

  • Online check-in will be “offline” between 1600 on Friday May 18 and 1200 on Sunday May 20,
  • Bookings and Flight Changes will not be allowed for hours between 2200 on Friday and 2200 on Sunday

As Ryanair is all heart, if you fail to check-in online, or print your boarding pass during the offline periods and you deciding to do it at the aiport will incur Ryanair’s usual fees – £60 a pass.

So if you’re flying Ryanair this weekend, check in as soon as is reasonably possible if you’re flying in any direction this weekend.

Ryanair bleats about it at http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/ryanair-com-24-hour-website-closure-18-and-19-may, making vauge promises that the upgrade will make things three times quicker.

Whatever three times quicker is in this world these days. Obviously, I’d expect some performance metrics to be released about their website…

Oh wait, this is Ryanair….

15 years ago, a group of airlines formally came together. Those airlines – Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines System and United Airlines formed Star Alliance.

Fifteen years in, the alliance has had its ups and downs, adding members with other members leaving due to various reasons. But it’s time to party with three promotions from Star Alliance:

  • Are you in the top 15 frequent fliers within your airline? If you’re sitting on a seat in a plane so often that you know the menu, the crew and the indentation on the seat so well you call it home, each member of Star Alliance is running a Top 15 promo, where you can win 15,000 extra miles. Fly between 14th May and 14th November 2012 to have the chance of becoming one of the 15 lucky winners of your frequent flyer programme.  Although lets be honest, if you’re flying that much – an extra 15k won’t probably make a difference to your mileage bank… Head to http://www.staralliance.com/en/15th-anniversary/ffbonus/ if you’re going to make you home in the sky over the next 6 months.
  • There’s a game where you can play to win at http://www.staralliance.com/project15/Stamp.do?language=en#
    • 1st prize: Business Class tickets for 15 people; you and 14 friends can visit your choice of one of 27 international festivals
    • 2nd prize: Round the World Business Class tickets for you and a friend including a trip to your choice of one of 27 festivals
    • 3rd prize: 2 Return tickets to your choice of one of 27 festivals
  • And finally 15% off Economy Round The World Tickets (excluding taxes and surcharges)

So. Nothing over exciting really there….

One of the things I love about flying is that for a set amount of time, you’re disconnected from the greater outside world. Well Virgin Atlantic wish to fully smash my desire for quiet with the announcement today that the new Airbus A330 aircraft will have Mobile Phone Call Reception installed.

Unlike the service offered on the British Airways Club World City Service which allows Data and SMS, the Virgin Atlantic system will feature the full suite – that’s Voice, SMS and Data.

Wonderful.

Installation of the hardware will be on the on Virgins Atlantic A330′s (3 Class version), and retrofitted to the Boeing 747.  The aircraft will offer Aeromobile’s service via roaming agreements, and will be installed on 20 of its aircraft.

Looking at the services if you desire to annoy your friends in the sky, you’ll get

  • Voice (Send and Receive Calls)
  • SMS  (Send and Receive Text Messaging)
  • Data (Limited to GRPS – 2G speeds)

Considering the amount of bandwidth on a plane, GPRS speeds is really no surprise.

Charges will be not that eye-watering depending on your budget – these will be within your provider’s international roaming rates.  However (and a big however), for UK customers – only O2 and Vodafone, have signed up. Everyone else is excluded.

So you’ll be able to use your phone at cruise, but not at the following times

  • Take off
  • Landing
  • Within 250 miles of US Airspace where the service must be disabled by US Law

I’ll be first to admit for those who desperately need to remain in contact with their office, this is a wonderful thing. For the rest of us who like being disconnected – even if it is a few hours in the air – this really brings the hell of modern life to you at 30,000ft and above…

It’s Sunday again, and it must be time for some more Airplane Art.

This week, it’s a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-200ER parked at Hong Kong International Airport.

The image is clickable if you want to see a larger version!
