The Indian Civil Aviation market is up for a change, since after years of disallowing unbundling of fares, the aviation regulator & minister have finally come around to allow this move, in line with global practices.

As per the new regulations, notified earlier this evening, the aviation regulator has allowed the following services to be charged for separately:

  • Preferential seating
  • Meal/snack/drink charges (except drinking water)
  • Charge for using Airlines’ lounges
  • Check in baggage charges
  • Sports equipment carriage
  • Musical instrument carriage
  • Fee for special declaration of valuable baggage

The regulator expects that base prices of tickets will go down when various services will be unbundled, however, I do not expect this to be the case because airlines in India would rather use this new regulation to top-up on existing ticket prices rather than reducing fares.

There were guidelines set in place to ensure airlines don’t go all out to take us for a ride, and this includes that airlines will need to notify these charges in advance and not club them with the base ticket automatically, rather ask the customer to choose what they want. Also, this means current product bundles such as the Indigo Plus and Spicejet Max will have to be discontinued and/or reinvented. In these packages, the airline allowed payments in advance for meals and seating (a smart way to circumvent existing regulations), however, with new regulations each product/service needs to be selected individually by the passengers.

I already expect Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir to come up with new charges in the next few days, however, it will be interesting to see Air India turning into the equivalent of a European/American legacy carrier where meals would be priced, and so would be other services. Also, Air Asia India, which is up and coming and expected to start operations in a few months, should be a massive beneficiary of this move.

Jet Airways, which has had plans to do this for the longest time, I expect them to go ahead with this. However their recent alignment with Etihad might allow them to offer a better full-service experience as compared to their peers in the Indian market. I also don’t expect them to charge for lounge access, considering they don’t have many lounges of their own around India anyways and use a lot of contract lounges.

I expect more competition for overhead bin space in the months ahead, what do you think?

I thought I bored you guys enough with the barrage of fare sales that hit yesterday. There were one too many: Jet Airways, Indigo and then Spicejet. I know all of you are not being able to get through, so I will try and do the best I can to help you.

First, lets go with Jet Airways. In the post I wrote yesterday, I told you the basics of their offer. There was a small footnote there, which I was not sure of at that moment, and hence not in the main text.

Small tip: look for one-way tickets. Round-trip will not show the correct fares!

It turns out that Jet Airways has now included this in their terms and conditions. The following changes have been made to the T&C:

  • Offer valid only for bookings on jetairways.com, jetkonnect.com, our offices and and also through travel agents in India.
  • Offer valid for one way flights only

So, basically, the fare sale is now open to travel agents, including online travel agents such as Cleartrip, MakeMyTrip and others. You can also call your friendly neighbourhood TA to check and book. The other change is to make it official the one-way policy, which was earlier an omission.

Also, here is how the fares are divided. So, not all fares are at Rs. 2,250 but according to distances, as mentioned in this chart:

Also, now that all these fares are available on the various portals, and their apps, it makes it very easy for you to book them online rather than having to work the Jet Airways website which is very very slow at this moment and frequently throws up such screens:

I booked some tickets using Cleartrip’s mobile app, and in the process foregoed 500 JPMiles per segment booked online, and some more JPmiles that I would have received on booking the tickets directly with Jet Airways, but at least got myself the peace of mind of not having to refresh Jet Airways’ website every now and I have some confirmed tickets.

TIP of the DAY: Be a little flexible with your plans. You will not perhaps get the Exact flight you are looking for, but that does not mean the sale is over. There may be a flight before or after, or a day before or after. So, stay flexible!

MONEYSAVING TIP:  Use the Cleartrip mobile site or mobile app to book and apply coupon code CTVALENTINE to get a Rs. 500 discount on a roundtrip booking.

Cheers and happy bookings!

I’ve had a long day full of meetings, and I’ve been not exactly in front of the computer all day long. So to recap, Jet Airways made the biggest fare sale in recent times this morning, and if you haven’t got in, there is time ahead. Next, Indigo matched it and undercut by a small amount.

Now, Spicejet took it upon themselves to be in the game as well. So, as if the 2013 INR fare sale they made in January was not enough, they announced the new sale a short while back on Facebook.

While I am not clear at this moment if this covers all their sectors, I checked randomly and I found some good deals on a few sectors. For Instance, Mumbai – Jaipur in June 2013, came to Rs. 3,192 while the normal fare on this segment is Rs. 4500+

Update: The terms & conditions were just published here, and it states the tickets are valid for travel between 19th Feb. to 15th Apr., 2013 and 01st Jul to 30th Sep’13. Bookings are open till February 24, but limited tickets on each flight.

Book away guys, I think this should last as long as February 24, the date the Jet Airways sale ends, but won’t have as much inventory.

Spicejet has been working on a maverick strategy to open up new routes rather than just operating on the tried and tested ones. They were the first ones to set up operations to Pondicherry with a Bombardier Dash Q400 a few days back, and opened up ops to Kabul, Male and Riyadh, places not frequented [...]

I love SpiceJet sales because they end up making me book tickets when I have no plans to go anywhere. To beat the lean season of travel (February – April 2013), they just unleashed a new promotion this morning which is valid for tickets booked on January 11 – January 13 2013, for travel between [...]

Pondicherry is one of my favourite towns in South India, although I must admit I last went there quite some time back, maybe 5 years or more. This little French post of yore has very good weather, good food, some good hotels as well. The trouble, it never had an airport when I used to [...]

I’m slightly foxed and I have no answers since last evening so I am crowdsourcing this one to ask and tell if my assumption is true or is this just fluke. Last evening I was trying to book a flight for my brother on one of his upcoming trips. We picked a flight, and decided [...]

A few days back I wrote about the inaugural fares being offered by Spicejet for their flight to Male (Maldives). While the offer still exists, I was surprised to know today that they were offering a combo fare on that flight, from Mumbai, and maybe other destinations as well. I only found out when a [...]

Ancillary revenue is the in-thing for low-cost carriers these days. Indigo took the lead with this concept long back, when they introduced Indigo Plus, which was the wrap of a cold meal on board + pre-assigned seating. They topped up with another new service offering called Fast Forward, which included priority check-in and priority baggage [...]

If you flew SpiceJet from 10th November to 13th November 2012, to mark the festive occasion of Diwali, SpiceJet has been handing out gift vouchers of Rs. 1,001 to everyone. This was not a promotion they’d spoken about earlier or on the website, but they posted on their Facebook page on 12th November. This post [...]
