Last week, I posted about Jet Airways offering a 20% bonus on converting your credit card points to Jet Privilege miles. I got a few queries about the transfer process and/or output, and I thought I’d answer them here in public interest:

• I got a question on Twitter, asking me if the 20% JP Miles bonus could be stacked with the 10% discount on web redemptions at Amex Membership Rewards. The answer to that, is No. The Amex Membership Rewards web redemption discount is not applicable on all categories, and Airline miles is one of them. So, you’d just transfer the applicable points currency from your credit card account and Jet Airways would credit the appropriate number of miles to your JP account
• Remember, this is a JetPrivilege promotion. So, the transfer bonus is being offered by Jet Airways, and they will automatically credit the 20% bonus after your normal conversion is done, as long as it is within the time frame they specified.
• I got questions about PremierMiles being converted to JP Miles. Just as a quick reminder, with effect from May 22, 2012 PremierMiles were not convertible to JP Miles. While other credit cards from Citibank such as the Ultima still can convert their reward points to miles, but not PremierMiles.

• I was also asked if it made sense to transfer Amex MR earned on the Platinum Travel Credit Card to Jet Privilege instead of redeeming for Indigo vouchers. I don’t have a ready answer for that, but how I look at it is that with Jet Airways you have more places to go and the further you’ll travel the better value out of your miles. With Indigo, it is a fixed rate thing, and ticket prices are variable everyday. So the best value you can get is when you book far out to get the best ticket prices.

Jet Airways has sent out emails to select members offering them 3x miles on their flight between June 18, 2013 to September 17, 2013. It is a sort of a welcome back offer, and offered only to members who have been sent out the emailers. The Triple miles offer is on the base miles flown, and excludes any tier bonuses or class of service bonuses that you may be eligible for.

What I don’t need to tell you is that this is valid for Jet Airways and JetKonnect flights only, and you need to have your JP number put on while check-in. However, what I do need to say is that interestingly, this is valid for the first flight ‘credited’ to your account during this period. For instance, you flow BOM-DEL/DEL-CCU you with them and the DEL-CCU flight gets credited on your JP account first. You get 3x miles on DEL-CCU rather than BOM-DEL. The complete T&C are here.

I suspect there are going to be a lot more things coming up for JP members in the coming days, since the airline is determined to give away a lot of miles to Jet Privilege members on occasion of their 20th anniversary! (I am saying this, not them!!). They already gave 20% of flown miles for past 20 flights to Jet Privilege members. This is one more generous offer, and I’d love to see something more for the regulars coming out too.

Jet Airways is back with a transfer bonus for you to transfer your credit card points to Jet Privilege miles. These offers were not usual from Jet Airways, but last year they offered a 25% bonus, which has gone down to 20% this year.

Between June 15, 2013 to July 15,2013 (both dates inclusive) you can transfer your credit card points to your Jet Privilege account, to get a 20% bonus if the points hit your JP account between this duration. The bonus miles will credit into you account within 10 days of the transfer being completed. The following cards qualify:

• India
• American Express
• Axis Bank
• Citibank
• HDFC Bank
• HSBC
• ICICI Bank
• IndusInd Bank
• Kotak Credit Cards
• Punjab National Bank
• SBI Card
• Standard Chartered Bank
• Tata Cards
• RBS
• UAE
• Citibank
• Standard Chartered Bank
• RBS
• Sri Lanka
• Standard Chartered Bank

Since the transfer is not instantaneous, and it takes a little longer for some banks such as HDFC Bank to transfer miles than American Express which will be usually a 24 hour process, you should look to transfer your miles early enough to get the bonuses.

My opinion: While American Express and Citibank points can usually be used with multiple transfer partners such as Cathay Pacific and British Airways, which may also give you better transfer bonuses at some point of time during the year, some other cards will not have too many transfer options, and hence you should redeem your points to JP miles if you intend to receive a transfer bonus.
