Marriott Hotels International Global Rank #7 by Number of Hotels; #3 by rooms according to HotelsMag survey of the 300 largest hotel corporations.

Marriott Hotels has a brand for every market segment. From the luxury service level of Ritz-Carlton to the extended stay Residence Inn brand. Marriott has Vacation Club resorts with villa apartments to the basic and relatively low priced Fairfield Inn. It has always seemed odd to me that Courtyard and Residence Inn are side by side hotels in many locations.

Marriott and Renaissance hotels are present in major cities around the globe.

Marriott tends to be everywhere you need to be in one brand or another.

Starwood Rank #9 by Number of Hotels; #8 by Number of Rooms Globally.

Sheraton is the largest Starwood brand. In locations with both a Sheraton and a Westin brand hotel, the Westin tends to be the more upscale hotel. Starwood is basically a corporate entity created in the late 90s that combined these two large existing brands.

Four Points and Aloft are Starwood’s midscale market brands. Aloft is Starwood’s new cookie-cutter style hotel. They are comfortable, lobby-centric for socializing and games, and a compact uniform guest room design. You have to look out the window to determine what city you are located since the inside of Aloft hotels are virtually identical.

Luxury Collection properties tend to be historic buildings remodeled or converted into hotels. Luxury Collection hotels rank well in Conde Nast’s annual Gold List. This brand is definitely one to look into when traveling to Europe.

W Hotels set a new millennium design standard for the hotel industry with its trendy, social, clever lighting, music filled space. I have spent lots of nights in a W Hotel since the cheapest W in the world is W Silicon Valley in the San Francisco East Bay city of Newark. Times are tough economically for hotels, but I am still waiting for the W Newark to drop back to the $59 rates of a few years back. W San Francisco is generally around $200 per night.

Le Meridien was a global hotel brand based in France and acquired by Starwood a few years ago. These hotels tend to have interesting design elements.

St. Regis is high-priced luxury and typically $300 to $400 per night.

Element is the newest Starwood brand and its extended stay market segment entry. I haven’t seen an element hotel yet, but I plan to visit one in Las Vegas next month.

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has around 381 Hotels and is the 19th largest hotel chain globally by number of hotels; 10th largest by rooms. Hyatt remodeled some of the Hawthorn Suites and Amerisuite brand hotels into the new Hyatt Place brand in 2007 and 2008. In late 2008 Hyatt Hotels sold off most of the remaining Hawthorn Suites and Amerisuite brand hotels to Wyndham Hotels. This reduced the Hyatt Hotels chain by several hundred hotels in 2008.

Holiday Inn is generally a midscale brand for most US properties despite a $1 billion makeover in the past year. A billion dollars doesn’t go that far when divided among 1,300 hotels. One new upper upscale hotel property can easily cost over $100 million.  Holiday Inns in international locations tend to be more upscale, on the level of USA Crowne Plaza properties, which is why I placed the brand in the midscale to upscale range.

Holiday Inn Express is everywhere in the USA. The fastest growing IHG brand is coming to a highway near you sometime soon. A comfortable room with free internet and breakfast is all most travelers desire.

InterContinental Hotels has Ambassador Club, a separate loyalty program from Priority Club with a first year membership fee of $150 per year and includes Priority Club Gold membership (normally $50). The membership value is rebated through a Buy One Get One weekend night free certificate for an InterContinental Hotel included with membership. InterContinental Hotels were originally established as Pan Am Airlines global hotel chain. Today these hotels rank in the high-end hotel segment in cities around the world.

Hotel Indigo is the newest brand. There are no properties yet in northern California, so I am still waiting to see a sample of the brand.
