Cathay Pacific 80 Days of Travel Contest

Loyalty Traveler Analysis:

The grand prize flight rules state all travel must be roundtrip and no repeated routes.

The prize includes:

  • up to three hotel nights at each destination city in a 4-star or higher hotel and
  • $2,400 Hong Kong Dollars (US$308) daily meal allowance and
  • $400HKD (US$51) daily ground transportation allowance.

That seems like a substantial daily meal allowance.

I certainly feel up to flying around the world in economy class this summer on Cathay Pacific and Dragon Air. The $300 daily meals allowance would even make airport lounge access unnecessary.

The taxes on this prize make it not worth it, I think, unfortunately.
I guess you could save your meal allowance though. That’s probably why it’s so high.

If I win, the taxes will be a business write-off. I think anyone in U.S. could win the prize, start a blog, and use the 80 days as a business expense.

A decent set of photos and blog posts and submissions to some magazine would actually generate income from the trip.

You can take a business loss for the year (deduct prize taxes from blog business income) on your U.S. taxes.

If you have a regular wage job, then the business loss actually reduces your overall tax liability.

That’s America and why everyone should have a small business.

I will make a great blog post about the cool experience. Since i love travelling and been to HK twice past 2 years. I will make sure that the readers would enjoy my trip experience. They can gain more knowledge and benefits about the trip. And would like to see what i have been experience before.
