About Choice Hotels

There are about 6,000 hotels worldwide in Choice Privileges in 11 hotel brands including midscale brands Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Clarion, Sleep Inn, Cambria Suites. The budget brands are EconoLodge, Rodeway Inn, Suburban, MainStay Suites. Ascend Collection is a set of properties partnering with Choice Hotels and represent some of the more boutique hotel properties in the family.

Choice Privileges hotel reward nights start at 6,000 points per night and go up to 40,000 points per night. The most expensive Choice Hotel in the world is Clarion Collection Edgewater Palms in Paihia, New Zealand at 75,000 points per night from April 16 – June 30, 2011. I vacationed for a week once in Paihia (another hotel) and fell in love with this location at Bay of Islands. The Clarion Hotel drops to 8,000 points per night  July 1-Sep 15, 2011.

There are about 2,000 hotels at 6,000 and 8,000 points per night. Hotels in my area of the Monterey Peninsula, a popular California vacation  locale, are mostly in the 20,000 to 25,000 points range.

In Q2-2010 the seasonal rates for Choice Hotels broke down like this:

  • 6,000 points = 604 hotels.
  • 8,000 points = 976 hotels.
  • 10,000 points = 968 hotels.
  • 12,000 points = 889 hotels.

  • 25,000 points = 228 hotels.
  • 30,000 points = 49 hotels.
  • 40,000 points = 24 hotels.
  • 75,000 points = 1 hotel.
  • 30% Choice Hotels worldwide were 8,000 points or less
  • 36% Choice Hotels worldwide were 10,000 points to 12,000 points
  • 28% Choice Hotels worldwide were 16,000 points to 20,000 points
  • 6%    Choice Hotels worldwide were 25,000 points and over. 

Choice Hotels have seasonally adjusted reward rates. For example, EconoLodge in Monterey is only 8,000 points per night until June 30 and then rises to 20,000 points per night from July 1 – September 15, 2011.

One of the best redemption options with Choice Privileges is for hotel partner rewards with Barcelo Resorts in Latin America and Preferred Hotel Group for upper-upscale and luxury hotels around the world. Barcelo Resorts are all-inclusive with food and beverage for 20,000 points or 25,000 points per night. Preferred Hotel Group properties are 30,000 to 60,000 points per night. Choice runs a promotion most years offering Preferred Hotel Group stays at 50% discount. This promotion was last offered Nov 3, 2010 -Jan 19, 2011.

Buying 216,000 points for $821 can be an incredible savings for 7-nights at a Preferred Hotel Group property at 30,000 points per night where rates can be $200 to $300+ per night. A week at a Barcelo all-inclusive resort can be redeemed for 140,000 to 175,000 points. The cost to purchase a 7-night stay at a Barcelo Resort will be significantly more than the cost to buy points today through DiscoverAmerica.com.

    In general, reward stays do not incur taxes when using all points for free nights through hotel loyalty programs. This can be a large savings of 20% or more in some countries and locations. San Francisco has a 15%+ hotel tax.

    In some international locations I have been charged a few dollars a day city tax, but that is not common and that wasn’t Choice Privileges.

    Odd. I signed up for a Choice Privileges account using the link provided in the offer. But when I put it in, I’m told to enter a valid loyalty number. I guess I can’t get this since the number given to me by Choice is no coming up as valid!

    someone mentioned: “There was an example on the page where the member numbers were to be entered. (aaa-0000). Tried to enter my number as it was on the acct. That didn’t work. But after I saw that example I modified my number and it worked. “

    It took me about 6 tries at the member number to get it accepted using the – between the letters and numbers. I was eventually successful

    I used the print card function from the choice website and copied in the GP – XXX – XXXX number and it worked.

    @Nic Franklin – The deal with Choice Privileges is due to seasonal variability of reward night cost, there is no master list of hotel category for reward nights.

    For example, EconoLodge Monterey is 8,000 points right now, but rises to 20,000 points July 1.

    Unfortunately you have to look up each property individually to see reward cost.

    @Paul Ahn – 50,000 HHonors points for $1,240 can be a great deal if you are HHonors VIP elite and qualify for VIP rewards. 6 nights at a category 7 hotel is normally 300,000 points, but a VIP reward is 25% discount and 225,000 points.

    There are many Hilton and Conrad hotels around the world where 6 nights for $1,240 is a significant savings. And you will still have 25,000 points left.

    An award of six nights or longer at a high category hotel is where HHonors returns the best value.

    Even if you are not VIP now, you only need 4 hotel stays to earn Silver VIP or ask for a status match or look for a promotional offer for instant elite. This deal is better than most of the DiscoverAmerica hotel deals because the large quantity of points opens many reward possibilities. There are plenty of Hilton properties where I would love to spend a week.
