Hotel Loyalty 2012-Q3 Promotions Marriott Hotels Marriott Rewards (replaced by Marriott Bonvoy)

$100 Marriott Gift Card earns 1,200 Southwest points to Nov 30, 2012

Marriott Gift Card purchases for $100, $250 or $500 Gift Card denominations earn up to 12,000 Rapid Rewards points with Southwest Airlines during the August 1 through November 30, 2012 promotion.

12,000 Rapid Rewards points are worth $200 on ‘Wanna Getaway’ fares.

60 Rapid Rewards points = $1 fare credit.

The earn rate for Rapid Rewards bonus points is constant regardless of the Marriott gift card denomination so there is no points advantage to any specific amount of purchases. The promotion maximum limit is 12,000 Rapid Rewards points with $1,000 in Gift Card purchases.

  • $100 Marriott Gift Card = 1,200 Rapid Rewards points bonus
  • $250 Marriott Gift Card = 3,000 Rapid Rewards points bonus
  • $500 Marriott Gift Card = 6,000 Rapid Rewards points bonus

This is a great deal for the frequent guest of Marriott hotel brands with a $200 rebate value in Southwest Airlines points for a $1,000 purchase.

Or you can spend in the low $100s and earn some bonus airline points and a Marriott gift card to pay for your next hotel stay.

Marriott Rewards and Southwest Rapid Rewards points

125,000 Marriott Rewards points = 50,000 Rapid Rewards points in a Marriott Rewards points-to-miles transfer.

Rapid Rewards members can choose to earn 600 points per stay at Marriott hotel brands. You can’t earn Rapid Rewards points for Ritz-Carlton stays and you might want to remove those Southwest Airlines luggage tags too before your RC lobby arrival.

Several other hotel loyalty programs also offer 600 Rapid Rewards points per hotel stay ($10 value). Southwest is a good program in that way with uniform earning across the chains.

Southwest Rapid Rewards points earning per hotel stay instead of hotel loyalty points is sometimes a better earning deal on a low cost stay that would otherwise earn few hotel points. Southwest $10 credit is often a better value than 500 miles with another airline choice or 200 Starpoints or 1,000 Marriott points.

do you know if the SW points earned via this method will accrue for companion pass status?

  • Grant August 20, 2012

There’s currently a similar offer for Delta SkyMiles. I saw it on another boarding area blog recently.

  • Ric Garrido August 20, 2012

@charles – “Companion Pass Qualifying Points are earned from revenue flights, points issued on Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Cards, and points earned from Rapid Rewards Partners. Purchased points and points earned from program enrollment, Tier bonuses, flight bonuses, and Partner bonuses do not count toward Companion Pass status.”

I don’t know if these points are considered “points earned from a Rapid Rewards partner” or a “Partner bonus”?

Seems to me they would be counted as points earned from a Rapid Rewards partner.

  • Ric Garrido August 20, 2012

@Grant – Delta Skymiles does have a similar offer to earn 500 Skymiles per $250 gift card; up to 10,000 Skymiles for purchases through September 2, 2012.

$1,000 in Marriott gift cards earns $200 worth of flight credit with Southwest or 2,000 Skymiles.

Southwest Rapid Rewards points seem to be far better value.

I never knew that point spend on the Southwest Visa card would count towards companion pass? If this indeed true, that would be very nice. Can you confirm this through your own experience?

I know that the 50,000 sign up bonus did count towards CP status, not sure about the card spend though.

I can confirm that card spend does count towards companion pass. I’ve had the personal plus card since April. The $69 fee didn’t count for example but every purchase since has as well as shopping through the rapid rewards portal. 15x sears in may being a noted example that I foolishly only tested with $1000 in gift cards.

How is the purchase coded in your statement? There is a linkables.com (http://www.mylinkables.com) 5% rebate on top of the promo…

    Thanks!

  • Don T November 9, 2012

Ric, do you have a roadmap to get me to the landing page by starting at marriott.com? I can only get there using outside links.

    Thanks
