DiscoverAmerica’s Daily Getaways sale continues the points purchase discount offers with InterContinental  Hotels Group (IHG) Priority Club points on sale Tuesday, May 25, 10am eastern time sharp!

There are four quantities available in 920 items from 10,000 points to 40,000 points and each customer can buy up to five items. Potentially you can buy 200,000 Priority Club points for $1,200. Daily Getaways Priority Club Sale link.

Discover America Daily Getaways IHG Priority Club Points items

  • $60 for 10,000 points (385 items) [regular buy points rate on Priority Club = $125]
  • $150 for 25,000 points (275 + 75 items = 350 items) [regular buy points rate on Priority Club = $287.50]
  • $240 for 40,000 points (185 items) [regular buy points rate on Priority Club = $460]

The loyalty advertising on the DiscoverAmerica site can be confusing for this IHG Priority Club points sale as with previous hotel points sales for Starwood and Hyatt.

For example, the 275 items of 25,000 points for $150 is advertised as “Stay 1-2 nights at Holiday Inn for $150”. The item being purchased is 25,000 points and there is no restriction to the use of the points for a stay at Holiday Inn hotels – you can redeem points for any InterContinental Hotels Group brand or exchange points into miles or other use. Using points for hotel stays almost always produces the highest monetary value.

IHG brands are InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites.

The main thing to keep in mind with this sale is to be ready to buy items within the first minute of the sale. The opportunity to buy 5 items means as few as 194 purchases may sell out the points.

My advice for the person who rarely uses IHG hotels and Priority Club is “Buy Points”

This offer is actually best for the person who rarely stays at IHG hotels. Savvy Priority Club members know how to earn 5,000 points with a $60 hotel stay and will likely not find as much value in this offer. But if you have few or no Priority Club points this is a good time to buy points.

Four reasons for buying points at $60 per 10,000 points.

1. This is a lower purchase rate than regular points purchases which cost $125 for 10,000 points through the Priority Club site.

25,000 points for $150 is sufficient for any Crowne Plaza hotel globally. There are many Crowne Plaza hotels that will cost well over $150 per night.

The majority of InterContinental Hotels are 30,000 points per night with about 40% at 40,000 points for a reward night. My local IC Clement in Monterey is rarely available for $180 per night after taxes, but is easy to book for 30,000 points (room and tax included).

Here is a global list of InterContinental Hotels at 30,000 and 40,000 points per night.

2. Normally there is a 40,000 points annual purchase limit for Priority Club. The purchase opportunity tomorrow gets around that 40,000 point annual purchase limit with an opportunity to buy up to 50,000 (5×10,000) for $300; 125,000 points (5×25,000) for $750; or 200,000 points (5×40,000) for $1,200. It is unlikely you will have time to buy items from two different lots before they sell out.

3. PointBreaks are Priority Club 5,000 point reward night special offers. Buying points at $60 for 10,000 gives you access to $30 per night PointBreaks awards. I have repeatedly showed savings on my blog with PointBreaks saving $200+ per night when buying points at the regular purchase rate. The DiscoverAmerica rate is just 50% of the normal purchase rate for points.

Keeping 10,000 to 40,000 points around is a good investment for a Crowne Plaza, InterContinental and/or Pointbreaks stay. The current PointBreaks list has dwindled down to the remnants of hotels still bookable in the last month. Here is a link to the full list of hotels that were available when the last PointBreaks list posted in March 2010 for stays through June 30.

The new PointBreaks list for summer hotel travel should be coming out any day now.

4. Points purchased through IHG Priority Club count for elite status. These Discover America purchased points will likely count as elite qualification points. [Note: I have not verified this fact.]

Earned points are just about any points that post to your account with the notable exception of points purchased for Priority Club Points + Cash reward nights.

20,000 points earned in a calendar year gives Priority Club Gold elite ($50 value + 10% bonus points on stays).

60,000 points in a calendar year confers Platinum status with a 50% bonus on stays and other potential benefits like complimentary upgrades.

Mark Twain regretted not buying St. Louis for six million dollars. While St. Louis may not be for sale today, the Hyatt Regency St. Louis is on sale this summer for rates of $49 to $99 per night, and possibly as low as $1.

Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch celebrates a $63 million dollar hotel transformation this summer with rates from $49 to $99 for stays between May 23 and August 31 in a “One Hundred Days of Summer” sale.

The hotel also offered 5 rooms per day at $1 a night, however, the $1 room sale began May 13 and I did not see any $1 rates for dates I checked. I did find $49 per night rates and $79 for Regency Club access.

Rates are only available online at www.hyattstlouissale.com.

Combine this sale with two stays for one free night promotion and you’d have to be a damn fool not to take advantage of this deal if St. Louis is in your travels.

I missed the past three weeks of loyalty promotions weekly updates due to the death in my family and bouncing up and down the west coast since April 28. My life is settling back into a predictable pattern and here is the updated version of the current loyalty promotions. I am sure there are several good promotions I have left off this list. Please leave a comment if you know of an offer I should include for readers.

The frequent guest has the choice of many hotel loyalty promotions with little guidance to their relative value. Here is Loyalty Traveler’s summary of current hotel loyalty promotions and limited time offers for the frequent guest.

Loyalty Traveler ranks the consumer value of hotel loyalty promotions on a Five Key Scale.

Five Keys = one of the best hotel loyalty promotions of the year.

Four Keys = high value rebate on the cost of hotel stays.

Three Keys = good value hotel loyalty promotion or rate offer

Two Keys = a bonus value if you play, but not necessarily worth going out of your way.

One Key = There is limited or no value. You are likely paying more than the bonus value.

Hyatt Gold Passport

Alert: Hyatt Gold Passport hotel award categories are going up for 25% of hotels as of June 4, 2010. Book you reservations before June 4 to lock in lower award category rates. Loyalty traveler post.

5-key promotion Big Welcome Back promotion for one free night after every two stays March 26-June 30 (March 26, 2010)

5-key promotion Hyatt Gold Passport Instant Platinum Elite and Diamond Elite Fast-track (Feb 21, 2010) This offer appears to have ended.

4-Key promotion – Earn up to 25,000 American AAdvantage miles with 5 Hyatt stays May 3 – July 5 (May 3) – Earn 3,000 miles per Hyatt stay and 10,000 bonus miles after 5 Hyatt stays between May 3 and July 5.  You must set earning preference to miles. This offer is combinable with the Big Welcome Back offer for one free night after every two stays or 5,000 points after every two stays.

3-Key Limited Time Offer American Express Membership Rewards Hyatt $100 certificate for 2-night stay for 1,500 Membership Rewards points through May 31, 2010. Certificate valid in US, Canada, and Caribbean through December 30, 2010.

3-key rate offer: $100 in Hyatt gift certificates for $80 at Costco. Many Costco stores carry these. Two $50 certificates cost $79.99. These certificates do not provide change. Effectively these certificates save up to 20% on room rates, but are not good on prepaid rates.

3-key rate offer: Hyatt offers a COSTCO discount rate (use Group/Corporate # 13365) that is equivalent or even better than AAA rate for many hotels. The Costco discount rate is up to 25% for North America hotels. Bookings must be made between May 7 – September 9 for stays from May 7 through September 12.

There are several different codes being tossed around for this offer.

Inserting 13365 in the Group/Corporate # has worked best for me in retrieving the $25 per night credit rate and the rate tends to match the prepaid rate, but with cancellation policies equivalent to AAA rates. For a one night stay the AAA full breakfast rate may be a better deal. Compare prices.

  • North American Park Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, and Andaz up to 25% + $25 nightly stay credit.
  • Hyatt Place and Hyatt Summerfield Suites up to 15% discount.
  • International Hyatt properties – up to 10% discount.

4-key promotion – Global Promotion: One free Marriott Category 1 to 4 hotel night after three stays June 1 – August 31. The main drawback of this offer is the lower category limit for the free night. Marriott has an 8 category award system. There are some nice Category 4 hotels, however, most major tourist cities have full scale hotel properties in the category 5 or 6 level.

The free night offer is targeted and available to most Marriott Rewards members. Marriott Rewards elite members are likely to have received a points offer based on nights for their Global Promotion offer.

Alternate Points offer #1: Earn 20,000 points after 15 nights or 30,000 points after 20 nights.

Alternate Points offer #2: Earn 25,000 points after 20 nights or 40,000 points after 25 nights.

Another InterContinental Ambassador promotion awards up to 10,000 points for stays in 4 different InterContinental Hotels between May 10 and July 31. Registration is required before your first stay counts.

  • 2,000 bonus points when you stay at one property
  • 4,000 bonus points when you stay at two
  • 6,000 bonus points when you stay at three
  • 10,000 bonus points when you stay at 4 or more

InterContinental Ambassador is the paid membership loyalty program for InterContinental Hotels. The initial annual membership fee is $150 or 24,000 Priority Club points. Membership includes instant Priority Club Gold elite membership with its 10% bonus points.

These are quite the  bonus offers considering the normal rate for earning points at InterContinental Hotels is 2,000 points per stay.  The bonus offers available over the next few months essentially cover the cost of membership and the added hotel stay perks as an Ambassador make this the perfect time to splurge on an InterContinental Ambassador membership if you are not already a member.

Ambassador members receive free internet at about 25% of the InterContinental Hotels.

InterContinental Ambassador FAQ link.

IC Ambassador Benefits:

  • Guaranteed room upgrade
  • Fresh fruit and mineral water
  • Complimentary weekend night – Members receive a Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) coupon for a free weekend night on a two-night stay. (Weekend nights are defined as Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, except Middle East Thursday, Friday, Saturday). You can take that $400 per night room down to $200 per night on a two-night weekend stay.
  • Membership packet includes a 5,000 Priority Club points voucher.
  • 4PM late check-out
  • Complimentary Pay TV film per stay
  • Ambassador Accelerator 20,000 bonus points for 15 paid nights. (Registration required for this offer, so sign up as soon as you join and before your first stay.)

All in all, Ambassador membership and 4 hotel stays in different hotels, with at least three being 2-night stays in one of the participating hotels for the 25,000 point bonus will earn 75,000 bonus points + 10,000 bonus points for four stays in different hotels + 8,000 stay points for 93,000 points. Most of the hotels I checked run $250 per night which makes Cleveland look pretty good on the hotel rate front if you just want to maximize the two-night stays for 75,000 points.

Do you lead an InterContinental life?

This is a good time to be an InterContinental Ambassador.

Discover America Daily Getaways has Hyatt points going on sale in packages of 24,000; 30,000; 36,000; and 69,000 points at 10:00AM Eastern time Tuesday, May 11. The rate is basically $10/1,000 points; slightly more or less depending on the package.

Like with the Starwood points sale last week on Daily Getaways, the Hyatt pages give the impression that the purchase is for a certain category hotel, but the fine print shows the purchase item is actually Gold Passport points. The member is free to redeem points for whatever hotel or redemption item desired.

There are four packages and there is a purchase limit of one item in each package:

  • $225 for 24,000 points is the best rate. 100 items for sale.
  • $300 for 30,000 points. 35 items.
  • $375 for 36,000 points. 15 items.
  • $700 for 69,000 points.15 items.

Normally a member can only buy 10,000 points from Hyatt Gold Passport in a calendar year and the purchase rate is $20 per 1,000 points and only available when needing up to 10% of points for a redemption award.

This offer on Tuesday, May 11 is half-price points with a much higher limit. I just spent 24,000 points to save $400 on two nights in a category 3 hotel that is dropping to category 2 next month.

Hyatt’s June 4 award charts will have 24% of hotels in the 5,000 point per night category 1 and 36% of hotels in category 2 for 8,000 points per night.

These are good deals for adding lots of points to your account without needing lots of hotel stays. But remember that lots of hotel stays right now will earn a free night or 5,000 points for every two stays.

These packages will likely sell out in five minutes. Be on time if you want to secure a purchase.

Omni Hotels Select Guest loyalty program has a buy one, get one (BOGO) deal for members. Select Guests members are receiving the BOGO codes by email this week. There are two one-time use codes in the email. The free night offer is valid for arrivals on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday from May 29 to Spetember 6, 2010.

One BOGO code is for the member to use for a free night on a two-night stay with an arrival on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. The second code is a one-time use code to be shared  with a family member or friend.

Barbara De Lollis, writer of Hotel Check-In for USA Today, mentioned this offer yesterday on her blog and when I checked my email I saw I had received the email from Omni Select Guest with two BOGO coupon codes.

Omni Select Guest allows members the choice between earning 500 miles per stay or a free night after every ten nights.

Omni Select Guest has 15 airline partners including American Airlines, United Airlines and Amtrak domestically. International partner airlines are Air France/KLM Flying Blue, ANA Mileage Club, British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, China Eastern, Emirates Skywards, Etihad, Jet Airways, Lufthansa Miles & More, Qatar Privilege Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Thai Royal Orchid.

Loyalty Traveler Rate Analysis

The rate quoted for a stay at the Omni Hotel San Francisco for two nights June 4-6, 2010 was $189 (plus tax) for the  first night and the second night is free.

The best rate I found for these same dates was a 25% weekend retreat promotion offering a 25% discount for a two night stay at $142 per night. The BOGO weekend offer at $216 all-in is a savings of over $100 on the $324 rate after tax for the otherwise lowest rate.

This week there is a daily trivia contest to win a Starwood Hotels free weekend night with the first correct response to a Starwood Hotels and SPG trivia question from SPGInsider on Twitter.

SPG’s Annual Platinum Amenity Gift

On another note – I noticed the email today from last week regarding a Platinum member gift. The choice I received was between a one year subscription for a Conde Nast magazine title or a $25 gift certificate for a hotel extra charge like food, beverage, or spa. The certificate does not appear to be valid towards room rate payment.

I sure miss the past offers of a free night or 50% off an award stay.

I have to say though that a free magazine subscription for a Conde Nast title or a $25 certificate as the annual Platinum amenity gift was a bit underwhelming this year.

Starwood Preferred Guest members can earn 1,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles for every stay with Sheraton Hotels in North America (US, Canada, and Caribbean) from May 1 through July 31. There is no miles earning limit.

This offer is combinable with free weekend nights, similar to last year’s promotion when Starwood Preferred Guest offered free weekend nights + Starpoints + Northwest/Delta miles for hotel stays.

SPG members may earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles with each Sheraton stay in addition to earning Starpoints and a free weekend night after every three stays. There is no need to change your earning preference to Direct Deposit to earn American AAdvantage miles.

Last year I earned 8 free weekend nights for 16 stays + Starpoints + 16,000 Northwest miles. The advantage of last year’s offer was all Starwood brands qualified for bonus miles. This American Airlines AAdvantage offer is limited to hotel stays at the Sheraton brand.

Sheraton happens to be the Starwood brand with the most hotels at over 400 properties. About 40% of all Starwood Hotels are Sheratons and the brand has more hotels than Westin and Four Points combined, the next largest brands by the numbers.

One nice feature of Sheraton Hotels is the benefit of free breakfast for Platinum members at many properties.

Separate registration is required for AAdvantage miles even if you are already registered for Free Weekend Nights.

Earn 5x miles with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club for two night or longer stays at any Hyatt brand hotel worldwide from May 1 through July 31, 2010.

Award travel between the US and London on Virgin Atlantic is only 50,000 miles for roundtrip economy class travel.

One of the best values for Flying Club miles is a roundtrip USA-London upgrade from Premium Economy to Upper Class for 40,000 miles. This can be a value-added use of miles in the neighborhood of $5,000 for Los Angeles to London.

Hyatt Gold Passport Registration required.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Upgrade Miles

Save 30% off the Hyatt Daily Rate for stays from May 28 to July 5 at Hyatt Place or Hyatt Summerfield Suites. These limited time offer rates are only available for booking through this Friday, May 7.

These rates are great deals, however, they are prepaid and nonrefundable rates and do not allow any changes. AAA rates generally give a 10% to 20% discount and are refundable rates with liberal cancellation policies.

Buyer beware! I am always highly reluctant to book prepaid, nonrefundable stays. Who knows what might happen in your life? An unexpected death in my family this week changed my plans and resulted in several family members losing paid airline tickets and hotel stays when travel plans abruptly changed to deal with this emergency.

I might consider this offer if I had a low-priced Hyatt Place in my neighborhood, but the nearest Hyatt Place to my home is 80 miles away and if I missed just one nonrefundable night at the Hyatt Place Fremont (as low as $51 for weekend nights), then I would give up all the savings compared to the typical AAA cost of four hotel stays at Hyatt Place Fremont ($63 per night).

Still, this is a good limited time offer rate for Hyatt Place and Summerfield Suites hotels.

Here is an analysis of a sample hotel travel plan to maximize the multiple Hyatt promotions currently available and combinable.

1. Earn a free night at any Hyatt brand hotel worldwide after any two stays at a Hyatt brand hotel worldwide (or 5,000 bonus points) with the Big Welcome Back promotion valid for hotel stays through June 30.

2. Earn 3,000 AAdvantage miles per hotel stay for a total of 28,000 miles with six hotel stays by July 5.

Six hotel stays at Hyatt Place Fremont or Hyatt Place Dublin at $55 per night all-in. $330 total.

Earn 28,000 AAdvantage miles + 3 free nights anywhere. Potential value in the neighborhood of $1,500.

Hyatt may have added a new high category award level 6 and moved 20% of its hotels to higher category levels beginning next month, but these promotions still make Hyatt the hotel loyalty program offering members the most incredible promotion incentives for your stays.
