Hyatt Hotels is rebranding Avia Napa and Avia Savannah to its luxury Andaz boutique brand in summer 2012. These two hotels, Andaz Napa and Andaz Savannah will bring the Andaz portfolio to eight hotels. Andaz Amsterdam will be the 9th Andaz and is also scheduled to open in summer 2012 on the Prinsengracht, the same city center canal as Starwood’s The Pulitzer Hotel.

Avia Napa and Avia Savannah were acquired in July 2011 along with Avia Long Beach, Avia The Woodlands Texas and 16 Hotel Sierra extended stay properties. In September 2011 these properties became part of Hyatt Gold Passport with the Avia upper upscale properties retaining their name. Hotel Sierra properties along with all Hyatt Summerfield Suites were rebranded as HYATT house in 2012.

Andaz Napa will have 141 rooms. This hotel is fairly new (2009) and located in downtown Napa. I visited the Avia Hotel in February 2011 and I found it to be the most interesting hotel in town if you wanted to be some place that had a happening vibe.

Napa, California

Napa, California as a town is a reflection of the mixed economy of northern California. The Napa Valley wine region is primarily north of the city of Napa. The city itself has some beautiful late 19th/early 20th century architecture with Victorian houses, lots of older trees and a small, older central business district that kind of reminds me of a Bruce Springsteen song the times I have walked the streets the past few years.

“Now Main Street’s whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there ain’t nobody wants to come down here no more”

     – My Hometown, Bruce Springsteen

Downtown Napa has had many businesses go under in the past few years and the tough economy of the old town center has been apparent during my visits since 2009. Yet, there is also a vibrant restaurant and bar scene with new places and new buildings. The supposedly improving economy may just fill many of the older vacant store fronts and new construction complexes along the Napa River with new businesses.

Avia Napa was a real bright spot as a new hotel on First Street opened in July 2009.

Hyatt’s Avia Napa hotel will undergo some refurbishment with the primary change looking to be the lobby conversion into a lounge area. The bar seemed to be the focal point of the lobby when I was there last year with a lot of open space and not much seating.

I like the location of Hyatt’s Andaz Napa better than the Westin Verasa Napa which is on the other side of the river and not really near much of anything except the Napa Wine Train station. There are several restaurants and bars in the downtown area.

Avia Napa was the hotel I considered the best value in town when I was in Napa about a year ago. As Andaz Napa I expect the rates might climb quite a bit higher. Time will tell and the rebranding to Andaz Napa will happen during the peak season dates from July to October 2012.

Rates for Avia Napa this next week are under $200 per night. Last year I think they were around $150 per night this time of year on weekdays when the hotel was not yet a Hyatt. Napa hotels always have higher rates on weekends when tourism substantially picks up.

About Andaz Hotels

Andaz Hotels are currently in London, New York (2), West Hollywood, San Diego and Shanghai. Other Andaz properties in development are locations in the resort area of Papagayo, Costa Rica; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean; Delhi, India; Sanya Sunny Bay, China (a rapidly developing beach resort area with all major luxury brands claiming a bit of beach); and Maui, Hawaii.

Hotel News Now published an article on the Andaz brand this past week that is an interesting read.

Hyatt Hotels press release on Avia to Andaz rebranding (March 8, 2012).

Hyatt Hotels launched a new rate offer this week called Free Time that gives a free night rebate at checkout. This rate is available for booking from March 20 through November 30, 2012 for stays through December 30, 2012.

Most participating hotels offer the third night free and the rate includes full breakfast for two and some hotels offer 2pm late checkout.

This offer is only for participating hotels in the US, Canada and Caribbean. Hyatt House and Hyatt Place are not participating brands.

The rate code is FRTIME. There is a website Hyatt.com/freetime that should describe the promotion offer and participating hotels, however, the link is not active at the time of writing. Read More…

Hyatt House is the new brand for Hyatt created from the conversion of extended stay properties of SummerField Suites and the 2011 acquisition of Sierra Hotels. There are 53 Hyatt House hotels in the U.S.

From a loyalty program point of view there are a few things to keep in mind with Hyatt House properties:

I feel compelled to issue a reality check based on the overwhelming pitch by bloggers for Starwood Preferred Guest being the primary program to consider when transferring hotel points for the US Airways points-to-miles 50% bonus from March 11-31, 2012.

Several travel blogs over the past 24 hours have discussed the US Airways hotel points transfer bonus promotion and most of the commentary suggests no other hotel program is worth considering besides SPG to get the best miles value from your hotel points. Read More…

The hotel guest has one primary objective – a sense of getting good hotel stay value for the money paid. The goal of the traveler is to find hotel value for any hotel whether booked through Priceline, Expedia, or a major hotel brand website.

Elite member recognition as a frequent guest can tip the scale for sticking to a specific hotel loyalty program member hotel over other lodging choices. The benefits of being an elite member in a hotel program combined with rebates on the cost of rooms in the form of hotel points, free nights and airline miles offers added value to the frequent guest.

Elite is High Value Strategy for Hotel Stays

An $80 upscale hotel room bargain gets blown out of budget with a $40+ hotel restaurant breakfast charge for two. Internet access can set you back $10 to $25+ per night at many high-end hotels.

Hotel loyalty program elite status is the best way to upgrade your hotel life for less cash. You do not have to be top tier elite with 25+ hotel stays a year in a loyalty program to receive valuable benefits like free internet, free breakfast and room upgrades.

Lower Elite Tier Benefits Survey

Hilton HHonors Gold (16 stays or 36 nights)elite offers rewarding benefits with free internet, breakfast globally except for Waldorf Astoria, and room upgrades, some with executive lounge access. Award stays count for elite credit.

Hilton HHonors Silver (4 stays or 10 nights) earns 15% bonus points which amounts to 16.5 points per dollar rather than 15 points/$1 for Points & Points earners. HHonors Silver elite has few benefits besides the 15% to 25% points discount for elites on award stays of four nights or more. Marriott and SPG offer all members 20% discount with 5thnight free awards.

Marriott Rewards Gold (50 nights) elite gets complimentary breakfast, except at resorts and Courtyard Hotels. That is a big gap in coverage with over 800 Courtyard hotels globally. It is hard to be Marriott Gold and an infrequent guest. Marriott Rewards Silver (10 nights)provides few useful hotel benefits except late checkout. The 20% bonus points is slightly more than HHonors Silver elite (15%).

IHG Priority Club Platinum (50 nights or 60,000 points). Priority Club counts all points earned and reaching 60,000 points is far less costly and easy to earn on far fewer than 50 nights. Platinum elites do not have a defined benefit for breakfast or even internet access, but room upgrades are a possibility and 50% elite bonus grows points more quickly. Gold elite is a 10% elite point bonus and little more benefit. Ambassador membership ($200 or 32,000 points)is useful for room upgrades, late checkout, 5,000 bonus points, annual Buy One Get One Free weekend night and other defined amenities only available at 170 InterContinental Hotels.

Club Carlson Silver elites (10 stays or 15 nights) are eligible for room upgrades, earn an extra 1,000 points online booking bonus, early check-in and late checkout and elite roll over nights. Gold elite (20 stays or 35 nights) adds a welcome gift. All Club Carlson members receive high speed internet, but only top tier Concierge elites (30 stays or 75 nights) have a free breakfast benefit.

Starwood Preferred Guest – Gold elite (10 stays or 25 nights) has a benefit of 4pm late checkout and a higher room category upgrade; mostly preferred view room, and with luck, sometimes a suite. Upgrades do not apply to Aloft or Element and late checkout is limited at resorts and conference hotels.

SPG launched new elite benefits March 1, 2012:

SPG Gold members

· Hotel Stay Welcome Gift – Choose from Starpoints (up to 250 points/stay) or free internet or free beverage.

SPG Platinum elite (25 stays or 50 nights) receive free internet and consistent room upgrades including suites and lounge access. Hotel Stay Welcome Gift – Choose from Continental Breakfast for entire stay or Starpoints (up to 500/stay) orlocal gift.

Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum elites (5 stays or 15 nights) are eligible for room category upgrades, free internet globally, 2pm checkout and every third stay earns a Platinum Extra Award for a choice of bonus points and F&B choices. Stay 15 to 24 times and the Award includes Regency Club upgrade or free breakfast. Diamond elites (25 stays or 50 nights) receive free breakfast and four confirmed suite upgrades.

Best Value Lower Tier Elite Benefits:

1. Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum (5 stays or 15 nights) free internet, upgrades, 2pm late checkout and 15% bonus points.

2. Hilton HHonors Gold (16 stays or 36 nights) free breakfast, internet, upgrades, lounge access and 25% bonus points. Award stays count for elite credit.

3. SPG Gold (10 stays or 25 nights) free upgrades, 4 pm late checkout, 50% elite bonus points and choice of free internet. Award stays count for elite credit.

4. Club Carlson Silver (10 stays or 15 nights) room upgrades, online booking bonus, elite roll over nights, early check-in/late checkout and 25% bonus points.

Consider the benefits of elite status that offer you the most value and choose your hotel loyalty programs accordingly in 2012.

This Loyalty Traveler article originally appeared in the February 2012 issue of InsideFlyer and this version has some SPG benefit updates announced a couple of weeks after this article was originally published.

March 15, 2012 will be the last day to earn miles for Hyatt stays or redeem Gold Passport points for miles in four airline programs including Air Canada Aeroplan, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, Frontier EarlyReturns and US Airways Dividend Miles.

There seems to be a trend in the hotel loyalty world of dropping North American airline partners while foreign carriers are added to hotel partnerships. Perhaps this has something to do with the focus on international development of hotel brands while the USA sits on the economic backburner for the time being. Hyatt announced that 170 new hotels in the pipeline will be 70% outside North America.

Marriott Rewards dropped American Airlines as an airline partner in 2011 and recently added Russia’s Aeroflot.

Hilton HHonors dropped Southwest Airlines for 2012, but Latin American travelers have the choice of Avianca/Taca LifeMiles.

The good news is there are still 30 airline partners with Hyatt Gold Passport. In my opinion, when it comes to points-to-miles exchanges, the value of Hyatt Gold Passport points is more than airline miles and I would not trade points for miles without an instant redemption opportunity for a high priced airline reward.

The real opportunity for me of the Hyatt Gold Passport airline partnerships are the occassional high value miles bonuses for hotel stays. And over the past couple of years Hyatt Gold Passport has allowed members to earn both points and miles on several of the bonus promotions.

Daraius at MillionMileSecrets.com is giving away three prizes of 22,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points for people who leave an answer on his blog or Facebook wall to the question “What do you like best about Hyatt?”

Comments are accepted through 11:59pm CST Saturday, February 25.

I have to say that I like the full breakfast benefit of Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond elite best of all. The 2,500 bonus points when a Regency Club lounge is closed is another great benefit for Diamond members, but I haven’t had the opportunity to receive that bonus too many times.

Diamond elite Free Breakfast saved $30 at Park Hyatt Chicago.

Update Feb 23: UnRoadWarrior, a BoardingArea blogger also has two prizes of 22,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points to giveaway. Leave a comment on that blog by midnight eastern time,  Sunday March 4.

Loyalty Traveler Note - Wed. Feb 22, 5:30pm Pacific: Seeing all the comments on this post has me concerned some people might be confused about the Million Mile Secrets blog sweepstakes. Loyalty Traveler is not giving away any Hyatt points. You must comment on millionmilesecrets.com to be entered into the Hyatt points giveaway.

Here is a spreadsheet with the ten largest hotel loyalty programs worldwide and all their airline partners for earning miles and points-to-miles transfers.

Hilton HHonors is far and away the biggest program for airline partnerships. That can be a major factor for a frequent guest earning miles from hotel stays in a frequent flyer program where there might be few opportunities to earn miles other than flying.

  • Hilton HHonors = 57 airline partners
  • IHG Priority Club = 43 airline partners
  • Marriott Rewards = 36 airline partners
  • Hyatt Gold Passport = 35 airline partners
  • Starwood Preferred Guest = 34 airline partners

There are 8 airlines that only partner with one of these ten programs.

I will follow up this post with comments and details on airline miles differences in earning rates between different programs.

This seemed like a useful table to create as I work on my series of hotel points-to-miles exchange rates across loyalty programs for a selection of major airlines.

Loyalty Traveler – Airline Tables for Hotel Points-to-Miles Exchange Rates

Delta is the second airline in my series of points-to-miles exchange rate tables for members earning frequent flyer miles from hotel stays. Delta Airlines Skymiles members will earn miles fastest from hotel stays with Wyndham Rewards, Marriott Rewards and Club Carlson as a basic hotel program member. Throw in elite status and a credit card and SPG matches and exceeds Wyndham Rewards for earning miles.

Delta Skymiles members have an advantage over members of the other major U.S. airlines in that eight of nine major hotel loyalty programs allow points-to-miles transfers at each program’s best exchange rate.

Club Carlson, SPG, Wyndham and Hilton are the best hotel chains for earning American Airlines AAdvantage miles from hotel stays. SPG is the best earning for the top elite, well-traveled Super 75 Platinum. Still, even if your lifestyle is only Super 8, Wyndham Rewards will get you there on an AA or partner airline flight by earning miles nearly at the same rate of hotel spend as SPG.

My Loyalty traveler series on hotel points-to-miles exchange rates for frequent flyer miles continues with a look at 9 major hotel loyalty programs and points-to-miles exchange rates. These tables look at the miles earned at set levels of hotel spend. Top-tier elite hotel status and the best earning hotel cobranded credit card for hotel stay payment are additional factors in the miles calculations.
