The new list of Priority Club PointBreaks Reward hotels posted today. These are hotels available for 5,000 points per night. Hotels are available until the allocated reward nights are booked and then the hotel drops off the list.

Priority Club members can buy points for $11.50 to $13.50 per 1,000 points. 5,000 points is $67.50 and the rate drops to $57.50 per PointBreaks night if you buy 26,000 or more points at a time. Members can buy up to 50,000 points in a calendar year.

Hopefully you already have points in your account. The availability of the Holiday Inn Express in Fortuna, California has me thinking about a coastal road trip north into Humboldt County this winter.

The selection is primarily in the USA this round with few hotels elsewhere in the world.

InterContinental Tahiti at 5,000 points per night is a deal if you can find a reservation and swing the airfare. Hint: Look in Asia.

The fourth article in this series comparing the “MegaChain” hotel loyalty programs of Hilton HHonors, IHG Priority Club and Marriott Rewards is a look at the hotel reward options for each hotel chain. Reward nights using points are one of the two primary incentives of being a hotel loyalty program member. The other incentive is additional complimentary hotel stay benefits received during hotel stays like free internet, complimentary room upgrades, hotel executive lounge access and free breakfast.

Comparing hotel rewards is one of the most technical aspects of hotel loyalty programs. The rate of earning points is different in each hotel loyalty program with Hilton members earning as many as 15 points per dollar for hotel spend while Marriott and IHG Priority Club earn as few as 5 points per dollar for certain hotel brands. Promotions offering bonus points also affect the rate of earning points in each program.

And even if the hotel loyalty member earns 10 points per dollar in each program, then is a 25,000 point hotel reward comparable in each program? How does one compare a Marriott Rewards category 5 reward night (25,000 points), Priority Club Crowne Plaza reward night (25,000 points) and a Hilton HHonors category 3 reward night (25,000 points)?

The logical way to compare hotel rewards across programs is to compare the published rate for the hotel night to the reward night cost in points. The problem is the reward cost is a fixed cost while the room rate fluctuates and might be $150 tonight and $250 tomorrow night for the same 25,000 points free night. The other variable is a 25,000 points hotel reward might save $100 at one Marriott Rewards category 5 hotel and save $250 at a different Marriott hotel.

The bottom line is hotel reward redemption value is dynamic and fluctuates depending on date and hotel. The best a member can do is try to use points in a way that maximizes their redemption value.

Priority Club posted new lists of PointBreaks hotels for reward nights at only 5,000 points available for stays to January 31, 2012. These are some of the highest reward night values available to members with the cost of 5,000 points being equivalent to about $30 for a hotel night. InterContinental O’Hare Chicago is the only IC in USA on list. There are several airport hotels to keep in mind if winter travels have you stuck on the ground.

Guaranteed the InterContinental Santiago Chile will be a significant savings at 5,000 points compared to the published hotel rate. These hotels drop off the list once allocated rooms are booked so booking sooner is always your best bet.

Oceania tends to have scant participation in PointBreaks this past year.

There truly are few roads crossing the canyonlands and mountains of Utah besides Interstates 80, 15 and 70 in the west and east directions. Historic transportation routes across the Great Basin deserts are relatively close to present-day Interstate 80 and Highway U.S. 50.

Getting off the interstate for much of the road trip across the deserts from Colorado to California was one of my objectives during the July 2011 road trip I dubbed Brokeass Mountain Tour.

St. Regis Aspen courtyard with pool area access closed for construction - July 2011.

After one night at the St. Regis Aspen we drove Interstate 70 for 27 miles west from Glenwood Springs to Rifle, Colorado where I headed north on two-lane Colorado State Highway 13, rather than drive Interstate 70 west into Utah.

Colorado Highway 13 travels through high country cattle grazing land loaded with elk crossing signs, although we didn’t see any elk, only cattle on this drive.

Grazing land beside Colorado Highway 13.

My objective was connecting to US Route 40, the major east-west highway across northern Colorado. Forty miles north of Interstate-70 is Meeker, Colorado and we turned onto Colorado State Highway 64 and followed the White River flowing west. The road had recently been scraped clean of mud and Flood Warning signs were still posted along the road. Record breaking rainfall had hit the Rocky Mountains just two days before in places like Breckenridge and Aspen. The road looked like the rains had washed mud from the mountains right across the road for several miles.

Meekeris one of those small towns with a significant history. A battle between the Union Army and the Ute Indians in September 1879 resulted in the tribal lands being confiscated and the removal of the White River Utes of Colorado to the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation in northeastern Utah. This reservation is located in eastern Utah between US Route 40 and Interstate 70.

The historic Colorado Hotel in Glenwood Springs has a Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Suite.

Hotel Colorado Roosevelt Suite in Glenwood Springs.

Apparently T.R. also did some mountain lion hunting based out of Meeker, CO.

St. Regis Aspen bronze statue mountain lion

An aerial view of the White River Valley around Meeker and the “China Wall” reveals the ruggedness of the western Colorado outback.

Highway 64 follows the White River through the western Colorado outback. This is the wild west where there aren’t many towns or people or paved roads. The realization that there are thousands of miles of paved road connecting small towns dozens of miles apart across the western U.S. created an alluring appeal for me to explore these sparsely populated places of hidden beauty that are bypassed by the vast majority of travelers on an interstate journey through Colorado and Utah.

Throughout my life I learned plenty of history from song references and one of the songs that connected with me during this drive from Colorado to Utah is Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier”.

Buffalo soldier in the heart of america

If you know your history

then you would know where you coming from.

~Bob Marley – Buffalo Soldier

Buffalo Soldiers were involved in the 1879 relocation of Utes from the White River region of Colorado to the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah. Henry Johnson was a Buffalo Soldier recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions at the Milk River Battle in Colorado 1879. Here is a fascinating historical lens to the Indian Wars and Colorado from an October 3, 1879 New York Times article describing the White River 1879 problems with reference to a buffalo soldier military unit in Colorado.

Kenney Reservoir on Highway 64 near Rangely, Colorado.

Future western states road trips will likely be solo since exploring the remote west is not such an alluring trip ticket for my wife who would much rather be exploring the historic cities of Europe.

The Colorado Plateau

The Colorado Plateau extends from the Grand Canyon region of Arizona in the southeastern portion of the Plateau to the Green River canyons of northeastern Utah and Yampa River in northwestern Colorado where the rivers converge at Dinosaur National Monument park.

The Green River is the largest tributary river to the Colorado River from its source in the Wyoming Rocky Mountains where it drains the high plateau on a course through Utah.

Driving I-70 east into Colorado Kelley and I figured Fruita, the first city where we drove adjacent to the flooded Colorado River, was a place for growing fruit, but why was Grand Junction, named Grand?

The AAA guide suggested Grand Junction’s name was due to its transportation junction location. Turns out the Colorado River from its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to where it joins the Green River in Canyonlands National Park, Utah was named the Grand River up until 1921 when Edward T. Taylor, U.S. Representative from Colorado  introduced a resolution to rename the headwaters section of the river in the state of Colorado as the Colorado River.

The Green River has a much larger watershed than the Colorado River before they converge at Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. The Yampa River is the second largest river in Utah and primarily runs west from Streamboat Springs, Colorado to where it joins the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument.

Dinosaur National Monument

The area north of US Route 40 in northwest Colorado and northeast Utah is dinosaur country. The Dinosaur National Monument Quarry Visitor Center has been in a temporary structure since 2006 when the main center closed for safety reasons. The new Dinosaur Quarry Center rebuilt using funds from the Obama stimulus package American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will reopen next week on October 4, 2011.

Traveling from Dinosaur, Colorado to Vernal, Utah reminded me of the economic divide we used to experience when living in Downeast Maine and crossing the border into Canada where the standard of living was visibly higher. Vernal, Utah has money, lots of major chain hotels, restaurants and fast food joints and the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum for a chance to see dinosaur fossils and full size replicas without having to drive to the Dinosaur National Monument.

Dinosaur replica outside Field Museum Chicago

There were several good dinosaur models I saw in Vernal, Utah while driving through town, but no pictures. The photo above was taken outside the Field Museum during my trip to Chicago in October 2010.

Looking north from US 40 to Cliff Ridge near Dinosaur National Monument.

The Uintah Basin, Utah

The Uintah Reservation of the Ute Indians runs through the Uintah Basin south of the Uintah Mountains where the highest peaks in Utah are located. This part of Utah is still sparsely populated and while predominantly a white citizenry, the largest town of Roosevelt was founded by homesteaders and not Mormons. The Uintah Basin was developed beginning in 1906 by homesteaders  with paid claims who bought land within the Uintah Indian Reservation at $1.25 per acre allowed by the Dawes Act as a way to integrate Native Americans with the American emigrant population.

Fort Duchesne is the current administrative center for the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, the second largest reservation in the U.S. Fort Duchesne was originally built and manned by Buffalo Soldiers for 25 years from 1886 to 1911. An article by Robert Foster from Wild West magazine February 2000 provides some history of Buffalo Soldiers in Utah Territory.

Farmland near Heber, Utah.

I never realized Utah had places with such green land in late July. This region of Utah is a strong contrast to the canyonlands of the southern regions of the state. Looking north to the Uintah Mountains provided some striking views of mountainous terrain that looked to be wild west wilderness to my eyes. Since I was driving west on US 40, I did not get any good photos of the high mountains to the north.

Park City, Utah

Highway 40 continues through the Uintah Basin and winds around Strawberry Reservoir, a major water conservation project and Utah’s most fished location. There was some thickly forested land in the mountains as we drove between the reservoir and Heber 23 miles north. The road drops down from the mountains into Heber located in a lush valley surrounded by the Wasatch Range of mountains separating Heber from Provo and Salt Lake City.

Park City is the year round world class sports resort on top of the eastern slopes of the Wasatch Range peaks, just a short 30 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City.

Park City was crowded with car traffic as we approached the historic downtown area, yet the tourist center was totally dead. Walking empty streets gave an eery feeling on a nice July afternoon. Kelley thought I had booked a resort in Park City, but I hadn’t since she had complained about altitude sickness after feeling nauseous  for our entire stay in Aspen.

I took that as a sign I should avoid another night keeping her at 7,000 feet in altitude so I took advantage of a Priority Club Pointbreaks hotel for 5,000 points at a Holiday Inn Express in Salt Lake City. That was a $30 night in points cost rather than blowing my free SPG Resort night at the St. Regis Deer Valley in Park City or 15,000 Gold Passport points for the Hyatt Escala Lodge Park City. Waldorf Astoria Park City had published rates at $109; far lower than Starwood or Hyatt paid rates.

The Village, Park City Utah on dead action July afternoon

My plan was to hang around Park City for about three hours taking photographs of the major resorts, but Kelley vetoed that Loyalty Traveler assignment. She asked me to take her to our hotel and then I could ride a bike down a ski slope by myself and bar hop all over Park City if I was still feeling like an Olympian.

Marriott Vacation Club Summit Watch Park City

Kelley was under the impression we were staying at a resort in Park City when I parked the car downtown and took her to the lobby of the Marriott Vacation Club Summit Watch. When she realized I was just taking pictures of resorts and I told her we would stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Salt Lake City she was relieved, and so was I that she wasn’t disappointed about not staying in a Park City resort hotel. She wanted to be out of the 7,000 ft. high altitude mountains of Park City ASAP.

All I can say to my readers who would have liked to learn more about Park City is that I was disappointed at being in one of the great ski resorts of the USA and unable to properly tour the town. I am planning to drive another road trip at my leisure and likely will pass through Park City, Utah again next June when I travel to Keystone, Colorado for Travel Blog Exchange 2012 Conference.

The view from above Park City, Utah

Feeling kind of miffed about my aborted tour of Park City I proceeded to drive the road up the mountainside from Park City with every intention to drive Highway 190 across the Wasatch Mountains to Salt Lake City and bypass Interstate 80. And I might have made it too if there was better road signage on those mountain slopes. At about 9,000 feet I hit unpaved road with huge potholes and abandoned my mountain road route to Salt Lake City.

View from above Park City, Utah

Empire Pass above Park City

Any locals to Park City reading this blog? Give me a clue in the comments as to where I missed Highway 190 when I was at Empire Pass above Park City.

I backtracked down the mountainside to Park City and drove the Interstate-80 freeway to Salt Lake City.

Kelley really liked those Holiday Inn Express breakfasts on this trip so it is probably best we didn’t stay at the St. Regis Deer Valley or Waldorf Astoria in Park City where the price of breakfast would not fit my brokeass mountain budget. In retrospect, I think the Hyatt Escala Lodge breakfast, complimentary as a Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond member, would have likely impressed her more if she would have been feeling well enough to eat in Park City. Her appetite was much better the next morning in Salt Lake City once we dropped back down a few thousand feet from the mountain slopes of Park City.

For readers I guess the thing to keep in mind is be prepared for some queaziness when you decide to travel to a ski resort at 7,000 feet or more if that is not an altitude you are acclimated to function in.

We had a decent stay at the Holiday Inn Express Salt Lake City. While swimming in the outdoor pool we met a couple from Nova Scotia who had driven cross country to Vancouver and down the Pacific Northwest coast to Eureka and back across I-80 to Salt Lake City on their journey home. They were asking for travel advice for Indiana. Sorry, not my expertise.

We shared stories of northern California with Kelley and I having lived in Eureka for nearly a decade and also Downeast Maine tales from our two years around Acadia National Park when we also had the ability to travel a bit around the Canadian Maritime Provinces.

All Mod Cons at HI Express Salt Lake City for 5,000 Priority Club Points.

Salt Lake City was under a smog alert for the day we headed west out of the city. What a shame that a city in such a remote location has air pollution reminiscent of Los Angeles. We packed up and headed out to the clear air of eastern Nevada, just another 30 hours from getting home to Monterey.

Priority Club PointBreaks are posted for hotel stays through November 30, 2011. InterContinental Dallas and InterContinental Malta are two hotels that stand out as particularly good redemption opportunities at 5,000 points per night. There are several Crowne Plaza Hotels for airport locations in California including SFO, LAX and SNA. Several other airports have Crowne Plaza hotels on this list. This list looks like a Crowne Plaza showcase. Have you stayed in a Crowne Plaza lately?

Vermont has seen its share of troubles lately, but the Holiday Inn Rutland at 5,000 points is one Fall Foliage tourist deal.

PointBreaks hotels only remain on the list for 5,000 points until the allotted room nights are booked and then the hotel drops off the list. Book these quickly if you think you can use one of the locations.

Oceania

No participating hotels.

Seems to me like Oceania hotels have been sitting out of PointBreaks offers for most of 2011.

My speculation on the demise of Priority Club PointBreaks was premature as a new set of hotels has been published for reward nights at 5,000 points for stays through July 30, 2011. This is a good sign and continued opportunity for cheap reward nights at 133 select hotels around the world over the next 12 weeks.

PointBreaks rewards may seem overwhelmingly targeted for U.S. locations with 79 hotels in the U.S. and 54 in all other countries. The limitation of Last Minute Rewards to U.S. hotels followed by a low presence of international hotels for PointBreaks has the appearance of Priority Club as a USA-centric loyalty program. Over 70% of IHG hotels are in the U.S. with Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn at around 2,500 hotels, and extended stay brands Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites with nearly 500 more hotels. The proportion of international hotels in PointBreaks is a fair sample relative to the proportion of non-U.S. hotels among 4,500 global hotels of InterContinental Hotels Group. PointBreaks include 16 Crowne Plaza hotels with 8 in the U.S. and 8 international and 3 InterContinental hotels in Egypt and Philippines available for 5,000 points per night through July 30.

Remember PointBreaks rooms are limited and once allocated rooms are booked these hotels drop off the list.

This weekend is the debut of Priority Club Last Minute Rewards. I waited for an email on Monday announcing the first set of 50% off reward nights for this new Priority Club feature. The March 29 press release announcing Last Minute Rewards stated the format included an email alert on Monday before the weekend of discount rewards. Instead I find out Wednesday evening through View from the Wing blog.

Last Minute Reward Nights: A hotel industry first, “Last Minute Reward Nights” will allow Priority Club members globally to redeem Reward Nights at a 50% discount off the regular point price, for selected properties.  Members will receive an e-mail on Monday providing a list of hotels where this offer will be available the following weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.  Initially, this program will be offered on the first full weekend of every month, starting with May 6, 7 and 8, 2011.  March 29 Priority Club Relaunch Press Release

I searched my emails and no message from Priority Club this week about these rewards. I guess they are keeping the new rewards low key for this initial set.

The Last Minute Rewards are a moot point in my case anyway. The closest participating hotels to me for this weekend are 350 to 450 miles away in Los Angeles and San Diego. I booked the Holiday Inn Express Merced instead for my Yosemite road trip on what might be the last ever Pointbreaks hotels for 5,000 points per night. That dropped the price of a $120 hotel to $30 which is what 5,000 points cost to buy from Priority Club through Points & Cash reward nights.

Last Minute Reward Nights May 6-8, 2011

127 hotels comprise the first set of Last Minute Reward nights. The hotels are 50% off the standard reward rate. This initial set of hotels only includes hotels in the U.S.

Searching the hotels requires checking by state to determine geographically where the hotels are located. Priority Club allows sorting by points from low to high or high to low, however, the hotels for Last Minute rewards do not show state labels, so unless you know by name where Hotel Indigo Basking Ridge is located you need to click on the link to determine the state location.

Priority Club Last Minute Rewards sorted by points level

You need to click on the United States link in left column to get a list of states and then you can search hotels by state.

Sort by State for easier browsing of Last Minute Rewards hotels

The image above shows hotels in a Last Minute Rewards sort for Colorado.

The top tier hotels on this weekend’s Last Minute Rewards are the InterContinental O’Hare and InterContinental Dallas, both at 15,000 points per night. Dallas looks like a great deal. Lucky from One Mile at a Time wrote about the InterContinental O’Hare as being one of the nicest airport hotels in the U.S.

Priority Club Last Minute Rewards sort by high-to-low points shows InterContinental Hotels

All in all, I like this new feature for Priority Club Rewards. I’ll like it even more when I find a hotel offered for a city where I need a hotel stay. In the mean time I will savor my PointBreaks night, even though it is a night in Merced, California.

My New Priority Club Platinum Card Arrived

On a related note: I picked up my newly redesigned Priority Club 2011 Platinum card in the mail today. I find the new layout more visually appealing than the old card.

Newly redesigned Priority Club Platinum Card with scenery

The good news is the current list of Prioriy Club PointBreaks hotels has been extended to May 15, 2011. There are no new hotels added to the list from the previous offer for March and April stays. The list has been shortened from 107 hotels on February 28, 2011 that were available for booking through April 30, down to 70 hotels that have extended the PointBreaks 5,000 points per night reward until May 15.

There is speculation on FlyerTalk that Priority Club PointBreaks rewards as we have known them at 5,000 points are dying off in May 2011.

The evidence:

  1. PointBreaks list extended for three weeks with no new properties listed.
  2. Priority Club launches Last Minute Rewards at 50% off the standard reward night rate next week with an email scheduled for Monday May 1 on participating hotels for the weekend of Friday May 6 – Sunday May 8.
  3. A new version of the InterContinental Ambassador brochure delivered last week describes PointBreaks Reward nights as 50% off.

Not only the PointBreaks news, but FlyerTalk member Chongcao in the UK received an InterContinental Ambassador brochure with no mention of 10,000 point hotel Priority Club rewards. Currently there are still about 200 properties listed as 10,000 point hotel rewards. Chongcao actually posted lists of Priority Club hotels March 2010 showing the different levels of hotel rewards available through Priority Club. This is still my web destination when I want to check hotel reward levels for 10K and 25K and InterContinental Hotels at 30K and 40K. Sounds like Chongcao may update the list soon for 2011.

Offer and participating hotels are subject to change at any time, valid for stays thru April 30, 2011. Reward night terms and conditions apply.

Link: Priority Club PointBreaks to April 30, 2011

A Hilton HHonors member spends 80,000 points for a two-night hotel stay at Conrad Brussels, Belgium this week. Next week Conrad Brussels is available for 24,000 points per night on HHonors Point Stretcher Rewards. The guest next week experiences the same hotel, same room comfort, same amenities, same staff and same restaurant. And the prospect of receiving a complimentary upgrade is increased during a low occupancy hotel period.

A shift of one week in hotel stay dates results in 32,000 points savings on a normally 80,000 points two-night reward stay. Even a three night Point Stretcher stay requires just 72,000 points for the HHonors hotel category 6 Conrad Brussels.

I burned over 2 million Hilton HHonors points in the past 12 years. More than 90% of those reward nights were reduced points rewards – either Point Stretcher nights or HHonors VIP discounted 6-night rewards. Singapore, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and Belgium are a few of the locations I stayed on Point Stretcher nights. These discounts allowed me to stay about 50 more nights at Hilton properties than if I had redeemed using standard rewards like 40,000 points for the HHonors category 6 Conrad Brussels.

Discount Hotel Rewards

Several hotel programs offer discount hotel reward nights. Marriott Rewards calls them PointSavers, Hilton HHonors trademarked Point Stretcher and Priority Club has PointBreaks.

Starwood Preferred Guest has Cash & Points and a similar reduced points and cash component offer is available for Priority Club at IHG properties and Goldpoints Plus for Carlson Hotels’ Radisson and Country Inn.

There are differences in each of these program’s offers. Here is a summary of how each offer works and what you can reasonably expect to find.

Three categories of hotel reward discounts.

Limited Date Discounts

  • IHG PointBreaks = 5,000 points per free reward night. (IHG reward nights are normally 10,000 to 40,000 points per night.)
  • Marriott Rewards PointSavers = discount to next lower hotel category reward level; for example, category 5 hotel (25,000 points/night) requires category 4 points (20,000 points/night) for free nights. 5th night free does apply to PointSavers rate.
  • Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher  = Pay 60% of standard reward points per night (40% discount); for example, category 6 hotel at 40,000 points is 24,000 points per night with PointStretchers. HHonors VIP Extended stay discount (4 or more nights) does not apply to Point Stretcher rewards.

Extended Stay Reward Discounts

  • Marriott Rewards =  5th night free (pay hotel category level points for four nights)
  • Starwood Preferred Guest =  5th night free (pay hotel category level points for four nights)
  • HHonors VIP rewards for stays 4 nights (15% discount); 5 nights (20% discount); 6 to 14 nights (25% discount). VIP discount rewards are restricted to HHonors elite members Silver and higher.
  • Goldpoints plus = 10% fewer points for additional reward nights after first night.

Cash and Points Rewards

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Cash and Points nights require 40% normal points and cash portion ranging from $15 to $150 depending on SPG hotel category level from 1 to 6. Not applicable to SPG category 7 hotels. Cash & Points have the potential for very high savings and points value. There are opportunities to save more than $200 on published room rates and receive a very high redemption value for your points, particularly at the category 4 ($60 + 4,000 points) and category 5 ($90 + 4,800 points) award level.
  • SPG Cash & Points awards are capacity controlled.

SPG Cash & Points chart

  • Category 1 = $25 + 1,200 points (only in U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific)
  • Category 2 = $30 + 1,600 points (only in U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific)
  • Category 3 = $45 + 2,800 points
  • Category 4 = $60 + 4,000 points
  • Category 5 = $90 + 4,800 points
  • Category 6 = $150 + 8,000 points
  • Category 7 = N/A

Priority Club – Points + Cash is a system for buying points to complete a hotel reward stay booking. Two options: Pay $40 for 5,000 points or $60 for 10,000 points. This option is available even if you have sufficient points for the hotel reward stay. This is a way to buy points at a huge discount and save Priority Club points for more hotel free nights. Buying points directly from Priority Club costs $230 for 20,000 points.

Goldpoints Plus Cash & Points offers the option to pay a cash supplement for reduced points reward nights. Category 1 to 3 hotels require 5,000 points and category 4 to 6 hotels require 10,000 points. Cash portion determined at time of hotel booking.

Important to Remember: Reward stays, including Cash and Points rewards, do not earn hotel stay credit for annual elite qualification, with the exception of Hilton HHonors and Choice Privileges where reward stays earn elite qualification credit.

IHG PointBreaks

These are the cheapest hotels available in hotel loyalty world at 5,000 Priority Club points per night, but I am wondering if Prioity Club members have seen the best days pass for this incredible reward discount. The last two PointBreaks lists may indicate a new pattern for PointBreaks with mid-month release in December and January for hotel stays through the end of the following month. The list released this week does not include a single InterContinental Hotel which I hope does not become a new trend.

June 7, 2010 – 118 hotels (79 US, 39 international) – stay through August 30, 2010.

August 2, 2010 – 130 hotels (79 US, 51 international) – stay through October 30, 2010.

October 4, 2010 – 126 hotels (77 US, 49 international) – stay through December 30, 2010.

December 13, 2010 – 35 hotels (15 US, 20 international) – stay through January 30, 2011.

January 24, 2011 – 55 hotels (31 US, 24 international) – stay through February 28, 2011.

The deal here is any hotel on the list is available for 5,000 points. All Crowne Plaza hotels have a standard reward cost of 25,000 points per night. A PointBreaks reward night for a hotel like Crowne Plaza Denver International Airport is an 80% discount.

InterContinental Hotels have standard rates at 30,000 points or 40,000 points per night. Landing a PointBreaks vacation at an InterContinental Hotel like IC Budapest (October 2010 PointBreaks hotel) means your 40,000 points can put you in a hotel room for an eight night Pointbreaks vacation rather than just a one night stay using a standard 40,000 points reward.

PointBreaks reward nights were an 87.5% discount at the normally 40,000 points per night InterContinental Budapest luxury hotel for stays October through December 2010.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers (Loyalty Traveler post 1/26 Marriott PointSavers)

Marriott Rewards PointSavers reduce the cost of an award night by one category level. A great feature of these rewards is the 5th night free is still offered with PointSavers. A category 6 hotel reward is normally 30,000 points per night or five nights for 120,000 points. PointSavers reduce the nightly cost of a category 6 reward down to the rate for a category 5 reward at 25,000 points per night or 100,000 points for five nights.

Biggest savings is 33% and results at Marriott category 3 level where a 15,000 points per night reward is just 10,000 points when paying the category 2 hotel reward rate. Five nights at a category 3 hotel for 40,000 points with a PointSavers reservation will likely have a high redemption value for your points in excess of $10 per 1,000 points (this occurs when the published rate of the hotel is more than $80 per night or $400 for five nights).

Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher (Loyalty traveler Dec 3 post HHonors Point Stretcher)

Hilton HHonors published a long list of hotels in early December offering Point Stretcher reward dates through May 2011. This is a welcome change for a program feature that languished a couple of years with very weak offerings. The hundreds of hotels on the current Point Stretcher list make Marriott Rewards, at just 25 hotels currently posted as PointSavers, look like the Hilton HHonors of old.

But don’t count on finding a Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher Category 1 Reward anytime soon.

Extended Hotel Stay Rewards

Carlson Hotels goldpoints plus (Radisson, Park Inn and Country Inn) discount every reward night after the first night by 10%. This is the best standard discount available for two or three night stays in hotel loyalty world.

Four night stays: Hilton HHonors steps in with a 15% total points discount available as an elite member VIP reward.

Five night stays: Hilton, Marriott and Starwood all discount five night stays by 20%. Hilton restricts all VIP discount rewards to elite members.

Hilton HHonors unquestionably wins the biggest discount contest with 25% off the reward cost for stays of 6 to 14 nights. Marriott Rewards was the best discount until they went to 5th night free in 2009. That being said, there is still competitiveness for Marriott with Hilton in that the hotel category reward distribution is much more skewed to lower categories for Marriott than Hilton. For example, there are many places where Marriott Rewards category 4 and 5 hotels are the same hotel market segment class as Hilton HHonors category 5, 6 and 7 hotels.

Marriott Rewards category 5 = 25,000 points per night or 7 nights = 150,000 points (5th night free).

Hilton HHonors category 6 = 40,000 points or 7 nights = 210,000 points (25% discount).

HHonors Points & Points earner at 15 points/$1 compared to Marriott Rewards at 10 points/$1 makes these two rewards nearly comparable in points cost for the respective programs. The promotions make all the difference for the member (or credit card earning).

Hilton, Marriott, SPG and goldpoints have the advantage over all the other hotel loyalty programs offering no discount for extended night hotel stays.

Conclusion: The value of your points increases when you take advantage of discount rewards. There are many hotels offering discount reward rates at any given time.
