Marriott PointSavers dates offer reward nights at the price of one category lower. A Marriott Rewards category 6 hotel normally 30,000 points is only 25,000 points per night during PointSavers dates. 5th night free rewards also apply, so a 5-night stay at a category 6 hotel on PointSavers dates is only 100,000 points (4 x 25,000 points).

Most of the hotels listed last week had no PointSavers dates past February 29. The new list is primarily March-only dates at 13 hotels in the USA and UK. Some of the other countries offer PointSavers dates later in the year.

And if your travel plans take you to Bogota, Colombia, then the Marriott Bogota and JW Marriott Bogota have the entire 2012 year on PointSavers. PointSavers rate at either Bogota hotel = 15,000 points/night or 60,000 points for 5 nights for these two category 4 hotels. Now that is one inexpensive hotel stay on points considering paid rates run around $200 per night for JW Marriott Bogota. But you had better book your stay soon for JW Marriott Bogota as that hotel is rising to category 5 on March 15 and will be 20,000 points per night on PointSavers.

The fourth article in this series comparing the “MegaChain” hotel loyalty programs of Hilton HHonors, IHG Priority Club and Marriott Rewards is a look at the hotel reward options for each hotel chain. Reward nights using points are one of the two primary incentives of being a hotel loyalty program member. The other incentive is additional complimentary hotel stay benefits received during hotel stays like free internet, complimentary room upgrades, hotel executive lounge access and free breakfast.

Comparing hotel rewards is one of the most technical aspects of hotel loyalty programs. The rate of earning points is different in each hotel loyalty program with Hilton members earning as many as 15 points per dollar for hotel spend while Marriott and IHG Priority Club earn as few as 5 points per dollar for certain hotel brands. Promotions offering bonus points also affect the rate of earning points in each program.

And even if the hotel loyalty member earns 10 points per dollar in each program, then is a 25,000 point hotel reward comparable in each program? How does one compare a Marriott Rewards category 5 reward night (25,000 points), Priority Club Crowne Plaza reward night (25,000 points) and a Hilton HHonors category 3 reward night (25,000 points)?

The logical way to compare hotel rewards across programs is to compare the published rate for the hotel night to the reward night cost in points. The problem is the reward cost is a fixed cost while the room rate fluctuates and might be $150 tonight and $250 tomorrow night for the same 25,000 points free night. The other variable is a 25,000 points hotel reward might save $100 at one Marriott Rewards category 5 hotel and save $250 at a different Marriott hotel.

The bottom line is hotel reward redemption value is dynamic and fluctuates depending on date and hotel. The best a member can do is try to use points in a way that maximizes their redemption value.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers discount the cost of a reward night by one category level. For example, a category 6 hotel at 30,000 points is only 25,000 points for a PointSavers reward night. The number of participating hotels in the current PointSavers list is disappointly low with fewer than 50 of 3,600 hotels worldwide offering a PointSavers discount.

Ritz-Carlton Hotels participate in PointSavers, but since the creation of Ritz-Carlton Rewards in 2010 there have been very few Ritz-Carlton Hotels posted on PointSavers.

Each participating property has its own date availability calendar in the same way Hilton HHonors PointStretchers designate specific dates for hotels.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers discount the cost of a hotel reward night by one category level.  PointSavers are available only at select hotels at any given time. There are currently 45 hotels listed with PointSavers dates.

A Marriott  PointSavers Reward at a category 5 hotel only requires the category 4 reward price – 20,000 points instead of 25,000 points per night so a 3-night stay is 60,000 points rather than 75,000 points for a 20% discount.

The 5th night free reward rate also applies to PointSaver Rewards for extended stays.

United Kingdom has 32 hotels for the vast majority of participating hotels on the current PointSavers Reward list with many of these hotels posting available dates into December 2011. There are nine hotels in the U.S. and just five more hotels in four other countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany and Costa Rica.

Ritz-Carlton Hotels also participate in PointSavers, however, there has either been a dramatic decline in participation since the September 2010 launch of Ritz Carlton Rewards or the hotels simply do not appear online. The Ritz Carlton Seoul Korea was on a previous 2011 PointSavers list only for two single night dates in January and February.

Marriott PointSavers Reward Chart

The Marriott Rewards system for PointSavers means the discount trends to lower percentage discount overall as the reward category increases. Marriott Rewards category 3 and Ritz-Carlton Rewards category 1 hotels are the sweet spot in the Marriott PointSavers system for the maximum 33% points savings.

At the top three Marriott categories of 6, 7 and 8 and Ritz-Carlton Tiers 4 and 5, the PointSavers discount falls below 20% overall.

A Hilton HHonors member spends 80,000 points for a two-night hotel stay at Conrad Brussels, Belgium this week. Next week Conrad Brussels is available for 24,000 points per night on HHonors Point Stretcher Rewards. The guest next week experiences the same hotel, same room comfort, same amenities, same staff and same restaurant. And the prospect of receiving a complimentary upgrade is increased during a low occupancy hotel period.

A shift of one week in hotel stay dates results in 32,000 points savings on a normally 80,000 points two-night reward stay. Even a three night Point Stretcher stay requires just 72,000 points for the HHonors hotel category 6 Conrad Brussels.

I burned over 2 million Hilton HHonors points in the past 12 years. More than 90% of those reward nights were reduced points rewards – either Point Stretcher nights or HHonors VIP discounted 6-night rewards. Singapore, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and Belgium are a few of the locations I stayed on Point Stretcher nights. These discounts allowed me to stay about 50 more nights at Hilton properties than if I had redeemed using standard rewards like 40,000 points for the HHonors category 6 Conrad Brussels.

Discount Hotel Rewards

Several hotel programs offer discount hotel reward nights. Marriott Rewards calls them PointSavers, Hilton HHonors trademarked Point Stretcher and Priority Club has PointBreaks.

Starwood Preferred Guest has Cash & Points and a similar reduced points and cash component offer is available for Priority Club at IHG properties and Goldpoints Plus for Carlson Hotels’ Radisson and Country Inn.

There are differences in each of these program’s offers. Here is a summary of how each offer works and what you can reasonably expect to find.

Three categories of hotel reward discounts.

Limited Date Discounts

  • IHG PointBreaks = 5,000 points per free reward night. (IHG reward nights are normally 10,000 to 40,000 points per night.)
  • Marriott Rewards PointSavers = discount to next lower hotel category reward level; for example, category 5 hotel (25,000 points/night) requires category 4 points (20,000 points/night) for free nights. 5th night free does apply to PointSavers rate.
  • Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher  = Pay 60% of standard reward points per night (40% discount); for example, category 6 hotel at 40,000 points is 24,000 points per night with PointStretchers. HHonors VIP Extended stay discount (4 or more nights) does not apply to Point Stretcher rewards.

Extended Stay Reward Discounts

  • Marriott Rewards =  5th night free (pay hotel category level points for four nights)
  • Starwood Preferred Guest =  5th night free (pay hotel category level points for four nights)
  • HHonors VIP rewards for stays 4 nights (15% discount); 5 nights (20% discount); 6 to 14 nights (25% discount). VIP discount rewards are restricted to HHonors elite members Silver and higher.
  • Goldpoints plus = 10% fewer points for additional reward nights after first night.

Cash and Points Rewards

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Cash and Points nights require 40% normal points and cash portion ranging from $15 to $150 depending on SPG hotel category level from 1 to 6. Not applicable to SPG category 7 hotels. Cash & Points have the potential for very high savings and points value. There are opportunities to save more than $200 on published room rates and receive a very high redemption value for your points, particularly at the category 4 ($60 + 4,000 points) and category 5 ($90 + 4,800 points) award level.
  • SPG Cash & Points awards are capacity controlled.

SPG Cash & Points chart

  • Category 1 = $25 + 1,200 points (only in U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific)
  • Category 2 = $30 + 1,600 points (only in U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific)
  • Category 3 = $45 + 2,800 points
  • Category 4 = $60 + 4,000 points
  • Category 5 = $90 + 4,800 points
  • Category 6 = $150 + 8,000 points
  • Category 7 = N/A

Priority Club – Points + Cash is a system for buying points to complete a hotel reward stay booking. Two options: Pay $40 for 5,000 points or $60 for 10,000 points. This option is available even if you have sufficient points for the hotel reward stay. This is a way to buy points at a huge discount and save Priority Club points for more hotel free nights. Buying points directly from Priority Club costs $230 for 20,000 points.

Goldpoints Plus Cash & Points offers the option to pay a cash supplement for reduced points reward nights. Category 1 to 3 hotels require 5,000 points and category 4 to 6 hotels require 10,000 points. Cash portion determined at time of hotel booking.

Important to Remember: Reward stays, including Cash and Points rewards, do not earn hotel stay credit for annual elite qualification, with the exception of Hilton HHonors and Choice Privileges where reward stays earn elite qualification credit.

IHG PointBreaks

These are the cheapest hotels available in hotel loyalty world at 5,000 Priority Club points per night, but I am wondering if Prioity Club members have seen the best days pass for this incredible reward discount. The last two PointBreaks lists may indicate a new pattern for PointBreaks with mid-month release in December and January for hotel stays through the end of the following month. The list released this week does not include a single InterContinental Hotel which I hope does not become a new trend.

June 7, 2010 – 118 hotels (79 US, 39 international) – stay through August 30, 2010.

August 2, 2010 – 130 hotels (79 US, 51 international) – stay through October 30, 2010.

October 4, 2010 – 126 hotels (77 US, 49 international) – stay through December 30, 2010.

December 13, 2010 – 35 hotels (15 US, 20 international) – stay through January 30, 2011.

January 24, 2011 – 55 hotels (31 US, 24 international) – stay through February 28, 2011.

The deal here is any hotel on the list is available for 5,000 points. All Crowne Plaza hotels have a standard reward cost of 25,000 points per night. A PointBreaks reward night for a hotel like Crowne Plaza Denver International Airport is an 80% discount.

InterContinental Hotels have standard rates at 30,000 points or 40,000 points per night. Landing a PointBreaks vacation at an InterContinental Hotel like IC Budapest (October 2010 PointBreaks hotel) means your 40,000 points can put you in a hotel room for an eight night Pointbreaks vacation rather than just a one night stay using a standard 40,000 points reward.

PointBreaks reward nights were an 87.5% discount at the normally 40,000 points per night InterContinental Budapest luxury hotel for stays October through December 2010.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers (Loyalty Traveler post 1/26 Marriott PointSavers)

Marriott Rewards PointSavers reduce the cost of an award night by one category level. A great feature of these rewards is the 5th night free is still offered with PointSavers. A category 6 hotel reward is normally 30,000 points per night or five nights for 120,000 points. PointSavers reduce the nightly cost of a category 6 reward down to the rate for a category 5 reward at 25,000 points per night or 100,000 points for five nights.

Biggest savings is 33% and results at Marriott category 3 level where a 15,000 points per night reward is just 10,000 points when paying the category 2 hotel reward rate. Five nights at a category 3 hotel for 40,000 points with a PointSavers reservation will likely have a high redemption value for your points in excess of $10 per 1,000 points (this occurs when the published rate of the hotel is more than $80 per night or $400 for five nights).

PointSavers Free Nights

  • Category 1 – Standard =  7,500 points; PointSavers = 6,000
  • Category 2 – Standard = 10,000 points; PointSavers = 7,500
  • Category 3 – Standard = 15,000 points; PointSavers = 10,000
  • Category 4 – Standard = 20,000 points; PointSavers = 15,000
  • Category 5 – Standard = 25,000 points; PointSavers = 20,000
  • Category 6 – Standard = 30,000 points; PointSavers = 25,000
  • Category 7 – Standard = 35,000 points; PointSavers = 30,000
  • Category 8 – Standard = 40,000 points; PointSavers = 35,000

PointSavers are also available for select Ritz-Carlton Hotels offering 10,000 points per night discount.

Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher (Loyalty traveler Dec 3 post HHonors Point Stretcher)

Hilton HHonors published a long list of hotels in early December offering Point Stretcher reward dates through May 2011. This is a welcome change for a program feature that languished a couple of years with very weak offerings. The hundreds of hotels on the current Point Stretcher list make Marriott Rewards, at just 25 hotels currently posted as PointSavers, look like the Hilton HHonors of old.

But don’t count on finding a Hilton HHonors Point Stretcher Category 1 Reward anytime soon.

Point Stretcher Free Nights Chart

  • Category 1 – Standard =  7,500 points; Point Stretcher = 4,500
  • Category 2 – Standard = 12,500 points; Point Stretcher = 7,500
  • Category 3 – Standard = 25,000 points; Point Stretcher = 15,000
  • Category 4 – Standard = 30,000 points; Point Stretcher = 18,000
  • Category 5 – Standard = 35,000 points; Point Stretcher = 21,000
  • Category 6 – Standard = 40,000 points; Point Stretcher = 24,000
  • Category 7 – Standard = 50,000 points; Point Stretcher = 30,000

Extended Hotel Stay Rewards

Carlson Hotels goldpoints plus (Radisson, Park Inn and Country Inn) discount every reward night after the first night by 10%. This is the best standard discount available for two or three night stays in hotel loyalty world.

Four night stays: Hilton HHonors steps in with a 15% total points discount available as an elite member VIP reward.

Five night stays: Hilton, Marriott and Starwood all discount five night stays by 20%. Hilton restricts all VIP discount rewards to elite members.

Hilton HHonors unquestionably wins the biggest discount contest with 25% off the reward cost for stays of 6 to 14 nights. Marriott Rewards was the best discount until they went to 5th night free in 2009. That being said, there is still competitiveness for Marriott with Hilton in that the hotel category reward distribution is much more skewed to lower categories for Marriott than Hilton. For example, there are many places where Marriott Rewards category 4 and 5 hotels are the same hotel market segment class as Hilton HHonors category 5, 6 and 7 hotels.

Marriott Rewards category 5 = 25,000 points per night or 7 nights = 150,000 points (5th night free).

Hilton HHonors category 6 = 40,000 points or 7 nights = 210,000 points (25% discount).

HHonors Points & Points earner at 15 points/$1 compared to Marriott Rewards at 10 points/$1 makes these two rewards nearly comparable in points cost for the respective programs. The promotions make all the difference for the member (or credit card earning).

Hilton, Marriott, SPG and goldpoints have the advantage over all the other hotel loyalty programs offering no discount for extended night hotel stays.

Conclusion: The value of your points increases when you take advantage of discount rewards. There are many hotels offering discount reward rates at any given time.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers discount the cost of a hotel reward night by one category level.  Book three nights at a category 5 hotel and only pay the category 4 reward price – 20,000 points instead of 25,000 points per night. PointSavers are available at select hotels. Some hotels currently have PointSavers dates listed into December 2011.

The current list is limited with only 20 hotels in the U.S. and 5 international hotels. But this is a great opportunity for a winter vacation in Michigan or spring in Cologne, Germany if you are in the area.

Ritz-Carlton Hotels also participate in PointSavers, however, there has been a dramatic decline in participation since the September 2010 launch of Ritz Carlton Rewards. The current list has only Ritz Carlton Seoul Korea and only for two single night dates in January and February.

On a side note: I notice two new Ritz-Carlton Hotels added since launch of Ritz-Carlton Rewards in September 2010.

Both hotels enter the system at the top Tier 5 for 70,000 points a night.

I guess entry at the Tier 5 top of the reward chart is appropriate for Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong since it will occupy the 102nd to 118th floors and hold the distinction of the tallest hotel in the world when it opens in March 2011.

Marriott PointSavers Reward Chart

The Marriott Rewards system for PointSavers means the discount is lower as the reward category increases in Ritz-Carlton Rewards. Marriott Rewards category 3 and Ritz-Carlton Rewards category 1 hotels are the sweet spot in the PointSavers system for the maximum 33% points savings.

At the top three Marriott categories of 6, 7 and 8 and Ritz-Carlton Tiers 4 and 5, the PointSavers discount falls below 20% overall.

The good news for Marriott Rewards members is the one-night rate has gone down for all but three Ritz-Carlton hotels. The bad news is the new Ritz-Carlton hotel reward tiers have increased the cost for the majority of hotel rewards on multiple night stays compared to the old Ritz-Carlton hotel partner rewards available through Marriott Rewards.

Ritz Carlton Hotel rewards changed to a five tier system of hotels today.

Yesterday, before the changes, the partner hotel rewards for Ritz-Carlton Hotels only used two tiers. Hotels formerly in Tier 1 are now in the new Tiers 1 and 2 with the exception of Ritz Carlton Sanya China, a beach resort and Abama Golf & Spa Resort in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain both going from Tier 1 in the old chart to Tier 3 in the new rewards chart. Seven night stays at these two hotels have increased by 71% in points cost.

The good news is the cost of hotels in the new Tier 1 have dropped for reward stays of one to six nights. The bad news is the hotels in the new Tier 2 have gone up in cost for any stay longer than one night.

Ritz-Carlton Hotels formerly in Tier 2 yesterday are now redistributed in the new Tiers 3, 4, and 5. The good news is hotels in the old Tier 2 Marriott Rewards now in the new Ritz-Carlton Rewards Tier 3 have only increased in cost for 7-night stays compared to the former reward cost.

There are also at least 5 hotels that were Tier 2 in the old rewards chart and are now in Tier 1 or Tier 2 in the new rewards. You will find much cheaper rewards now for Ritz Carlton Doha, Qatar and RC Shenzhen, China in the new Tier 1.

Ritz Carlton Bahrain, Ritz Carlton Istanbul and Ritz Carlton Osaka in the new Tier 2 were in the old tier 2.

The Tier 1 and Tier 3 hotels are the best points deals in this new system compared to the old rewards.

Here is the list of current tiers for Ritz-Carlton Hotels from the Marriott Rewards site. I added the former Tier 1 or Tier 2 designation in parentheses next to each hotel. Unfortunately I did not copy the old Ritz Carlton Hotels tier list yesterday, so I am working off a list from six months ago. If anyone has a recent copy of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 Ritz-Carlton hotels before the changes, please send me a copy. The old tiers information is now gone from the Marriott Rewards site.

Ritz Carlton Hotel Reward Tiers

Tier 1    30,000 points per night  (20 hotels)

Tier 2   40,000 points per night  (26 hotels)

Tier 3   50,000 points per night  (18 hotels)

Tier 4    60,000 points per night  (7 hotels)

Tier 5    70,000 points per night  (1 hotel)

How long do you think the Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park will remain the lone hotel in Tier 5?

Here is the complete list of Ritz-Carlton Hotels globally and organized by geographic region, including hotels that are not participating in Ritz Carlton Rewards.

Below are tables showing the impact of the new Ritz-Carlton Hotel reward tiers today compared to the former Marriott Rewards partner hotel rewards for Ritz-Carlton discontinued on September 14, 2010.

Hilton HHonors free night after 4 stays or 10 nights

January 7 – March 31, 2010

Posted on FlyerTalk by HamptonInsider this promising HHonors promotion for a free night valid across the Hilton system after 4 stays or 10 nights. The promotion details are not released yet, so at this point the rumor is just a seemingly reputable insider pre-release on FlyerTalk. There will likely be some restrictions on hotel reward nights redemption and perhaps some hotel exclusions, but overall this may be a sign of a new style of promotion activity from Hilton HHonors.

The points increases in 2010 categories is not so bad a change if the HHonors program makes it easier to earn free nights with promotions like the current 25,000 points after 4 stays and what looks to be a free night offer coming in January.

The leisure traveler may find HHonors a lifestyle deal with their two-pronged approach to rewarding loyalty membership. HHonors may see a return of the HHonors points traveler who can earn some lucrative bonuses on hotel stays. Combine the points budget traveler with the big fish spender putting $40,000 on the HHonors co-branded credit card for complimentary HHonors Diamond elite annual membership.  The Diamond lifestyler from both ends of the economic spectrum can find good value with HHonors. MegaBonus 25,000 to 60,000 points depending on offer and nights stayed.

Feb 1- April 30, 2010.

Members are receiving new Marriott Rewards 2010 Megabonus offers. Marriott targets members with different offers.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers Plus 10% discount or 15% discount for Gold and Platinum elite members.

There are still three weeks to book a discounted discount hotel nights reward with the special PointSavers offer through January 15, 2010.

Update January 5, 2010: My personal MegaBonus offer is a free night (category 1-4 hotel) after two stays. Limit of one free night may be earned and free night to be redeemed by August 31, 2010. This offer is essentially a 20,000 points value if used for a Category 4 night. I have no elite status with Marriott Rewards.

IHG Priority Club Rewards

1,000 bonus points per night or 200 bonus miles up to maximum 20,000 points or 4,000 miles (20 nights).

Priority Club Rewards Registration Link

20,000 points is a rather weak offer from IHG considering this is only 50% of the points needed for one free night at a top tier InterContinental Hotel costing 40,000 points. The points-hungry tactic with IHG is to play the promotion registration game with Priority Club Rewards. A member can average 5,000 to 8,000 points per night for stays in IHG brand hotels.

Marriott Rewards PointSavers Plus offers a rebate on discounted reward nights using points between September 9, 2009 and January 15, 2010. The title of this post is Marriott’s promotional phrase, not my original superlative phrase.

Register online by January 15, 2010 or call 1-801-468-4000. Stay eligibility is retroactive for PointSaver nights redeemed during the promotional period. You still get the points rebate if you booked a PointSaver stay before signing up for the promotion as long as you register by Jan 15, 2010.

Gold and Platinum Marriott Rewards elites = 15% Point Rebate on PointSaver nights.

All other Marriott Rewards members = 10%

PointSavers are a point discount of one category level for a hotel stay using Marriott Rewards points. A hotel listed as a Category 6 redemption hotel for Marriott Rewards free nights normally costs 30,000 points per night with a 5th night free.

PointSavers reduces the cost of the Category 6 hotel to a Category 5 level for 25,000 points per night with a 5th night free.

Dates and participating PointSaver hotels are variable.

Ritz-Carlton Hotels are available for Pointsavers, however, they are not eligible for this rebate offer.

The table above shows there are some significant savings on Category 6 PointSaver redemptions after the 15% rebate points for Gold and Platinum elites compared to the regular cost for a Marriott Rewards Category 6 Hotel.

Sample Category 6 Hotels Participating in PointSavers:

Chicago – The Blackstone, Renaissance Hotel

November 22-27, 2009

December 17-30, 2009

Aruba – Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino

February 1 – December 21, 2009

Category 5 Hotels:

Edinburgh Marriott Hotel, Edinburgh, Scotland

January 1 – December 31, 2009

Marriott Druids Glen, Ireland

January 1 – December 31, 2009

There are a couple of interesting terms and conditions for the PointSavers Rebate:

*Your membership year elite level will be determined by your December 31, 2009 qualification level. This means you could be Silver elite at the time you redeem PointSaver awards and receive a 15% point rebate in January if your membership level is Gold by December 31, 2009.

*A rebate can be earned on a multi-room stay if Marriott Rewards account is associated with the stay.

Link: Marriott PointSavers Plus promotion terms

Either you currently have Marriott Rewards points or you don’t. This is actually a clever incentive for increasing hotel stay and points earning activity with Marriott Rewards for the remainder of the year. Activities like shopping through Marriott Rewards web shopping portal, activating or using a Marriott Rewards credit card, and hotel stays will boost your account balance. Since this is a rebate promotion you will need the full amount of points required for the PointSavers award nights. The rebate of points based on your Dec 31, 2009 elite qualification will happen sometime in January through March 2010.

Lake Las Vegas

Lake Las Vegas is 17 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip, just past the suburb city of Henderson. The lake itself is a 320-acre private lake surrounded by a 3,200-acre Tuscan inspired resort complex of hotels including the Ritz-Carlton, Loews Resort (formerly a Hyatt Resort), MonteLago Village Resort, residential communities, a golf course, and the small disneyesque MonteLago Village beside the lake.

Lake Las Vegas is a far different experience from the Las Vegas Strip. This is the kind of place where you can easily keep the kids entertained with outdoor activities without the need to dodge street drunks and sex advertisers prevalent along the Strip.

Lake Las Vegas

Lake Las Vegas

Lake Las Vegas is the place for visitors to the Las Vegas Valley whose idea of a vacation is more in tune with lying by a pool all day, riding in or paddling boats on the lake, and playing games at ping pong tables or pool tables rather than poker tables. There is still dining in restaurants, perhaps a spa treatment or two, and outdoor free shows while basking in a warm weather getaway at a resort hotel for fine dining and evening entertainment away from the Strip.

Ritz-Carlton Hotel Lake Las Vegas

Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas is a resort where a Lake view is desirable and worth the extra $20 or so per night. The hotel was built in 2003 and has 348 rooms and suites. There is a $25 per day Resort fee which includes internet access, spa and fitness center facilities access, free local calls, and access to business center computers.

Weekends at the resort generally mean less choice in room selection, in addition to higher rates, unless you book well in advance. You will likely pay more for the less desirable Resort view on a Friday or Saturday night than you will for a Lake view on any other weeknight.

Marriott Rewards offers a PointSavers discount whereby the rate for a free night using points is reduced by one category level for participating hotels. UK hotels are heavily featured for 2009. The PointSavers participating hotels list is up-to-date.

The PointSavers advertisement is up to 33% savings. This is true if you book a Marriott Rewards category 3 hotel participating in PointSavers. The regular rate of 15,000 points per night for a free night at a Category 3 hotel will be reduced by 33% to 10,000 points per night. In effect you can redeem 3 nights at a Category 3 hotel for the normal price of 2 nights.

33% is the maximum savings using PointSavers.

The savings is reduced as you go higher in category level using PointSavers.

Here is a table to show the savings by hotel category level for Marriott Rewards PointSavers.

Marriott Rewards feature of “Redeem 4 nights and get the 5th night free” is applicable for PointSaver redemptions.

Ritz-Carlton PointSavers

Ritz-Carlton Hotels are part of the Marriott Hotels chain. You can redeem your Marriott Rewards points for Ritz-Carlton hotel stays, however, you do not earn Marriott Rewards points for Ritz-Carlton stays.

A great feature of Marriott Rewards is the participation of Ritz-Carlton Hotels in PointSavers. In fact, the advantage of Ritz-Carlton PointSavers is the per night rate for multi-night stays still decreases for longer stays just as the old Marriott Rewards chart did for Marriott brand hotels.

A free night using Marriott Rewards points for a Tier 2 Ritz-Carlton Hotel for a 1-night stay will cost 70,000 points regularly. A 7-night hotel stay will cost just over 35,000 points per night. The per night cost using points decreases by almost 50%.

There are four main Marriott Hotels in San Francisco all at Category 6 or 30,000 points per night. The 5th night free award saves 30,000 points. A Marriott Rewards guest will spend 180,000 points for 7 nights on a regular award at one of these San Francisco hotels. None of these hotels are currently participating in PointSavers for discount award nights.

PointSavers for 7-nights reduces the cost for a free night at a higher level Ritz-Carlton Hotel to just over 27,000 points per night for a hotel like the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco and Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, 35 miles south of San Francisco. A Marriott Rewards guest will spend 190,000 points for a 7-night PointSavers stay available through September 30, 2009. An additional 10,000 points will upgrade the guest from a Marriott or Renaissance to a Ritz-Carlton in the San Francisco area.

Hey Marriott! PointSavers webpage update is overdue.

Marriott Rewards has not updated the PointSavers FAQ page. The webpage describing PointSavers has been out-of-date for all of 2009 since the Marriott Rewards program changes in January 2009. The FAQ provides an incorrect example for the first question:

“What type of value does PointSavers provide?

The PointSavers value is exceptional. Members may receive up to a 33% savings on point redemptions depending on the hotel category and number of nights requested.

Locations participating in PointSavers are discounted by one category in Marriott Rewards point requirements.*

For example, members can stay in a Category 5 hotel while redeeming points for a Category 4 hotel. So, to stay at a Category 5 hotel for two nights at a standard redemption would require 46,000 Marriott Rewards points. The same stay with PointSavers would be 38,000 points or a 21% savings.”

http://www.marriott.com/rewards/marriottRewardsPointSaversFAQs.mi

Using the current Marriott Rewards free night redemption table the example should read:

For example, members can stay in a Category 5 hotel while redeeming points for a Category 4 hotel. So, to stay at a Category 5 hotel for two nights at a standard redemption would require 50,000 Marriott Rewards points. The same stay with PointSavers would be 40,000 points or a 20% savings.”
