Go HoJo and possibly save 15% on your hotel rate for summer bookings.

Howard Johnson hotels advertise a 15% discount off Best Available Rate with their “Stay 2, Save a Few” summer offer for 2 nights or longer stays.  Free high speed internet and a continental breakfast are added benefits of this budget hotel chain.  The Howard Johnson hotel brand is a member of the Wyndham Rewards hotel loyalty program so your stays can earn points.  The recent InsideFlyer analysis of hotel loyalty programs viewed Wyndham Rewards solidly in the lower-middle range for free nights earning power based solely on spending among nine major hotel frequent guest programs.

Reservations need to be made by September 1, 2008, but reservation dates can be made this summer for a hotel stay later in the year as I found the 15% rate for dates in November 2008 during my rate searches.

The Wyndham reservations process has some interesting features not common among hotel reservations systems.   A regular hotel search returns special offer rates without the need to specifically search for special offers.  AAA and group rates do need to be checked separately, however, this promotion only applies to a discount on the publicly available Best Available Rate.

Ironically, when I used the promotional rate link for “Stay 2, Save a Few” for Monterey, the search return showed a higher rate for the Howard Johnson, Fremont Street in Seaside, than the rate shown in a default-mode search for Best Available Rate.

The Stay 2 promotion reservation link returned a rate at $67 per night,  or 10% more than the $60 rate when searching for Best Available Rate (BAR).  When searching for the BAR rate a “Manager’s Special” promotional rate came up at $60 per night.  The “Stay 2, Save a Few” reservations website link returns the $67 higher rate at the Howard Johnson, Seaside and the rate does not state 15% off and the traveler is not shown the “Manager’s Special” rate in the search returns when using the “Stay 2, Save a Few” special offer link.

The 15% discount provides a good deal for Monterey for some dates at the three Howard Johnson hotels on the Monterey Peninsula for some dates.  The “Stay 2” rate will show in a search using the Best Available Rate standard search method, if available.  The “Stay 2, Save 15% Off Best Available Rate” will display as a header above the room rate.

To be safe, make sure to check the hotel rate using the regular reservations page.  My rate searches revealed the “Stay 2” link may not be the lowest available rate for your stay.

Kimpton Hotels Low Summer Rates for San Francisco

Special summer rates at any San Francisco Kimpton Hotel for stays now through September 1, 2008.

            Harbor Court Hotel                 $109 (Thursday-Sunday)

            Hotel Triton                            $109 (Thursday-Sunday)

            Serrano Hotel                          $119 (Thursday-Sunday)

            Prescott Hotel                         $129 (anyday)

Sir Francis Drake Hotel          $139 (anyday, except Saturday)

            Hotel Monaco                         $159 (Thursday-Sunday)

            Hotel Palomar                         $159 (Thursday-Sunday)

Argonaut Hotel                       $169 (anyday, except Fridays and Saturdays)

There was availability for 8 dates of 10 searches I checked.  (Harbor Court Hotel was unavailable on two dates checked.) An interesting feature of this promotion is the availability of the low rate on any day of the week for at least 3 hotels in San Francisco.  Monday to Thursday are usually the highest rates of the week for downtown San Francisco.

These hotel rates for summer travel in San Francisco are competitive summer rates for the City and substantially less than rates I saw in searches two weeks ago.  Compare the benefits for a Kimpton InTouch loyalty traveler to the recent InsideFlyer’s July 2008 article on hotel loyalty programs and free nights earned based on hotel spending.  In their analysis, a traveler spending $2,052 will earn only one free night in San Francisco with just 4 of 9 hotel loyalty programs.  Kimpton Hotels is not included in their analysis.

2 free hotel nights at any Kimpton hotel can be earned for under $1,000 (including the 14% tax).  Kimpton InTouch is running a promotion for 1 free night after 3 stays and the regular benefit for InTouch members is a free night after 7 stays.  2 free nights can easily have a value of $600 to $800 in some hotel locations.  For 10 stays in 10 different Kimpton Hotels in the calendar year a person can earn an additional 2 free nights at any Kimpton Hotel with the Kimpton Passport Reward.  Kimpton InTouch can bring the frequent guest 4 free nights for an investment under $1,500 for 10 one-night hotel stays in 10 different hotels.  This achievement can even be accomplished without leaving California.

4 free hotel nights for a $1,500 investment in Kimpton Hotels this year with strategic hotel stays matches the free nights earned with the best of the 9 loyalty programs Inside Flyer reviewed based on a frequent guest spending approaching $6,000 per year.

Summer 2008 may be a good time to get InTouch with Kimpton Hotels.

Starwood 1,000 bonus points for summer stays

“Far Away is Closer than You Think”

The picture of the white sand beach and palm tree caught my eye.  1,000 bonus Starpoints definitely captured my attention.

From the beaches of the Caribbean to the Maldives, Starpoints take you farther.  Earn 1,000 bonus Starpoints for Sunday through Thursday stays at participating Starwood Hotels and Resorts now through September 30, 2008.”

Registration is required online or by telephone at 888-625-4988 and mention code M7A.

Key Terms:

-         Valid on new reservations only.

-         Not valid on group rates like AAA, senior rates, but may be available on some corporate rates

-         Only one bonus per stay that includes a Sunday through Thursday night.

-         Four Points hotel brand stays only earn 500 Starpoints

-         Participating hotels are only in North America and specific months of participation varies from hotel to hotel.

-         Participating hotels in USA

-         Participating hotels in Hawaii

-         Participating hotels in Canada

-         Participating hotels in Caribbean

I understand the W Retreat and Spa Maldives is Starwood’s trophy travel luxury property in Central Asia, but mentioning the Maldives in a North American promotion for 1,000 Starpoints is a drop in the bucket – or sand in the face- for the 60,000 Starpoints per night requirement for an award stay at the W Maldives Indian Ocean island location.

Wouldn’t “From the beaches of the Caribbean to Hawaii” be more appropriate ad copy for this North American promotion?

Regardless, I just booked a mid-week stay and the 1,000 Starpoints is a welcome bonus promotion for summer travel in the USA.

”Rediscover the best of Britain this Summer” is an InterContinental Hotels Group special offer for summer travel in the British Isles.

Terms of two special offers for United Kingdom hotels this summer:

Special Rates Offer 1: Room & Breakfast for two at IHG Hotels in the UK with rates as low as 39GBP (about $78USD) are listed in the link.

Special Rates Offer 2: Two Nights with Breakfast and One Dinner for two persons at IHG Hotels in the UK.  Rates as low as 99GBP.

Rates are valid only for weekend nights of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from June 6th to September 7th, 2008, inclusive.  Some hotels may offer the special rate on other days and Brighton specifically only has mid-week special rates.

While the advertisement is for rates as low as 49GBP (about $98USD), there are hotels listed in the promotion at 39 GBP for a room and breakfast.

REGULAR HOTEL SHOPPING vs. SPECIAL OFFER SHOPPING

Special offers are a key component to getting the best rate at some hotels at some times. A trip to the IHG websites does not prominently show a special offer rate for UK Hotels.  The vast majority of web users simply go to an IHG website like Crowne Plaza Hotels or the Priority Club hotel loyalty program website to research and book a room in London.  Perhaps you use a site like Kayak or Expedia to get an overall feel for room rates.

Regular Shopping for Hotel Rates (June 19, 2008)

Expedia.com Hotel Reservations,

London St. James Crowne Plaza, July 11-13, 2008 (two night stay)

$762.29   nonrefundable rate for two nights in a standard room, no extras

Crowne Plaza website reservations: ($1.96 = 1 GBP 6-19-08)

London St. James Crowne Plaza, July 11-13, 2008 (two night stay)

439.46 GBP = $861.34 nonrefundable rate for two nights in a standard room, no extras

486.46 GBP  = $953.46 with breakfast, nonrefundable rate

Special Offer Shopping for Hotel Rates

InterContinental Hotels Group Rediscover Britain Promotion Link:

London St. James Crowne Plaza, July 11-13, 2008 (two night stay)

for two nights room, breakfast, and one dinner for 2 persons

280.00 GBP = $548.80 USD, nonrefundable rate

Expedia in this case offered a lower rate than shown on the regular reservations system of InterContinental Hotels.  And IHG reservations does not make it easy for you to find the special offer for the summer savings in the United Kingdom.

The IHG Summer in the UK special offer link cuts nearly 30% off the room rate for the Expedia special rate.  Both rates are non-refundable.

To give you an example of the value of this package.

London - St. James Crowne Plaza Hotel 280GBP ($550US) for

2 room nights + 2 breakfasts for 2 + 1 Dinner for 2 people

Assume a good hotel rate for downtown London is $200 per night, and the St. James Crowne Plaza is 1/2 block from Buckingham Palace.  $400 value for two night stay.

Assume realistic meal rates to buy breakfasts and a dinner on your own and the meal inclusive package value added benefit is:

Breakfast = $15 per person x 2 persons x 2 days = $60 value

Dinner = $40 per person x 2 persons = $80 value

$540 real value at this hotel in terms of getting a fantastic rate of $200 per night on a two night stay and 3 meals in a restaurant in downtown London where shopping for food can be a pain.

The Room and Breakfast rate is available only for one night, July 11 at the St. James for 120 GBP or $235 USD.

I stayed at the St. James Court for a week in 1989 (before it was a Crowne Plaza) on a 50% off rate.  This is a great deal for the location and in London near Victoria Station and Buckingham Palace for this summer travel season.

These special rate offers are announced in hotel loyalty programs and generally disappear, sometimes quickly into cyberspace links that can be quite difficult to find on the hotel program websites.

Two good sources for hotel special offer links are www.pointmaven.com and www.frequentflyerbonuses.com

Savvy travelers see significant savings from special offer rates.

Kimpton Stay 3, Get 1 Night Free Summer Promotion

Kimpton InTouch members have a valuable incentive to hotel stay this summer. Kimpton’s InTouch hotel frequent guest program will give members staying 3 times at any of the 42 Kimpton Hotels in the USA and Canada by August 31, 2008 a free night at any Kimpton Hotel.

Free Night Summer Promotion Terms:
- Promotional Period: June 15 – August 31, 2008
- Must be a Kimpton Hotels InTouch member at time of stay for credit eligibility. As long as member enrolls before checkout, the stay is eligible.
- Any Kimpton Hotels website published rate or package rate is eligible.
- A stay is defined as one or more consecutive nights at a single property regardless of check-in/ check-out dates.
- Free Night credit will be applied the week of September 1, 2008
- This promotion is combinable with the regular InTouch frequent guest benefit of earning a free night after 7 eligible stays.
- One Bonus Night can be earned for stays during the promotional period.

By the Numbers:

The Kimpton InTouch frequent guest earns one free night after 3 stays with this summer promotion. I put the numbers at about $480 to $600 after taxes, for 3 paid hotel nights based on sample rates in San Francisco ($144, Sir Francis Drake Hotel July 3, 2008), Denver ($143, Hotel Monaco, July 11) and Washington, D.C. ($139, Hotel Madera, July 12).

One free night for a mid-week urban stay in the Kimpton Hotels of New York City or Washington, D.C. can regularly be in the $350 to $500 range for mid-week stays.

$449, The Muse Hotel, NYC, Wed. Nov 19

$500 to stay 3 nights in a Kimpton hotel this summer can have a 100% return on investment with one night free in a $500 per night room in New York City later in the year.

7 Stays Earns a Free Night, the regular benefit with Kimpton InTouch

The InTouch frequent guest normally earns a free night after 7 stays. There is a significant opportunity for high value when you combine the summer promotion with the regular loyalty benefit to earn 2 free hotel nights with as few as 7 paid nights (as 7 one-night stays). I put the numbers at about $1,000 to $1,400 for 7 paid hotel nights based on rates in San Francisco ($144, Sir Francis Drake Hotel July 3, 2008), Denver ($143, Hotel Monaco, July 11) and Washington, D.C. ($139, Hotel Madera, July 12). There is the potential for nearly $2,000 in hotel room value with 9 hotel nights for around a $1,100 pay-out.

A brand new member to Kimpton Hotels InTouch program can get nearly a 100% return on investment if you can plan your hotel stays to maximize the value of the free nights. At the low-end a member should be able to get at least $600 in free room value with two free nights after as few as 7 paid nights.

Kimpton InTouch Free Night Rewards Benefit Spans the Years

A feature of Kimpton’s InTouch frequent guest program is a running hotel stay history on the member’s account that carries eligibility for free night credit from one calendar year to later years. Normally a member earns a free Kimpton hotel night credit after every 7 hotel stays or 20 hotel nights. The stays and nights do not need to be in the same year. In theory, after earning a free night from the 2008 summer promotion with 3 stays, the member could stay 2 more times in 2009 and 2 more times in 2010 and earn a free night after the 7th stay two years from now.

Loyalty Traveler Commentary “Earn Them and Burn Them”

The rules as written now for Kimpton InTouch frequent guests grant a free night after every 7 stays. This rule can change at anytime and it is important for a loyalty traveler to realize frequent guest program rules are dynamic. The trend in hotel frequent guest programs across the industry is to make free nights more expensive to redeem. Since Kimpton’s InTouch does not work on a hotel points-based structure of earning and redemption, the logical adjustment in the future is to up the stays/nights ratio for a free night. The free night after 7 Kimpton stays will likely be adjusted as the program grows and might be adjusted to something like earn a free night after 10 stays or 25 nights.

Earn Them and Burn Them.

The point is the loyalty traveler should plan on earning and spending within six months to a year to accurately estimate the value of your hotel loyalty program promotions. In the current hotel industry environment there are not many instances where loyalty program benefits become significantly more generous for the member in terms of earning free nights and plenty of instances where value deteriorated significantly with frequent guest program adjustments.

About Kimpton Hotels
There are currently 41 boutique-style hotels open in the USA and most prominent in the key cities of San Francisco (9 hotels) and Washington, D.C. (7 hotels). There are not a lot of Kimpton Hotels, however, they are located in the major cities around the country. Several more hotels will be opening soon and industry news indicates Kimpton Hotels has money and plans to buy properties in key US and Canadian markets over the next couple of years.

Ric’s Note: The past week I have posted overviews of Wyndham Rewards, Choice Privileges, and Best Western Gold Crown Club (Randy Petersen reports the rumor that a name change to Best Western Rewards is in the works). I was actually writing these in the spirit of budget travel. Then, I come across a FlyerTalk thread mentioning hotels in Europe are available at 50% off standard redemption rates for Radisson. I’m reminded of a Radisson Gold Points advertisement I kept seeing in May on FlyerTalk making a claim to being the easiest hotel program to earn free nights or some such bold statement (sorry, I don’t remember the ad wording and I didn’t ever get a screen shot. Send me an email if you know the wording of the Radisson ad I am taking about).

These blog posts are not comprehensive analyses of the hotel loyalty programs. I have written quick basic informational overviews and report some of my findings as I navigated the hotel loyalty program and corporate websites for a particular chain. The primary issue for me as a hotel loyalty program analyst focused on the consumer is user-friendliness and function for both the frequent guest program and the loyalty program and reservations websites.

*****

Radisson Hotels – GoldPoints Plus

The Radisson Hotels and Resorts websites were terrific for ease of navigation and locating relevant information about the loyalty program, points required for a free night, and elite member benefits.

Carlson Hotel Family – 985 hotels worldwide in five hotel brands in 71 countries. The first Radisson hotel was opened in 1909 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Radisson Hotels and Resorts is one of the hotel brands of Carlson Hotels Worldwide. Headquarters: Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Radisson Hotels and Resorts (USA) – mid-scale to upscale lodging segment with about 400 full-service hotels in the flagship brand in 64 countries
Radisson SAS Hotels and Resorts (international) upscale lodging segment
Radisson Edwardian Hotels (UK and London) – 13 hotels in upscale lodging segment

Regent Hotels and Resorts (luxury lodging segment) – 9 hotels with several more in construction. These luxury hotels were part of Four Seasons when bought by Carlson in 1997.

Park Plaza – (mid-scale to upscale lodging sector) about 40 hotels and many international locations

Country Inns and Suites – (mid-scale lodging sector) over 450 hotels in North America, Europe, Latin America and India

Park Inn – (mid-scale lodging sector) about 100 hotels worldwide

Earning GoldPoints

20 Gold Points per $1 US or Euro in eligible hotel spending at Radisson Hotels and Resorts, Regent Hotels, and Park Plaza hotels.

15 Gold Points per $1 US or Euro in eligible hotel spending at Country Inns and Suites and Park Inn hotels.

500 bonus points for booking online. (Most major hotel programs eliminated online booking bonuses years ago.)

The points earnings are biased against Euro currency. This is certainly not as good a deal for the hotel stay purchases made in Europe when the Euro is worth 50% more than the dollar. How are points calculated for a European member staying in the Middle East on a currency different from USD or EUR?

Redeeming Points for Free Nights

The GoldPoints website offers every hotel member redemption rate for a free night using GoldPoints on a single webpage.

There are 6 tiers of hotels for free night reward redemption starting at 15,000 GoldPoints for a Tier 1 free night and rising to 90,000 GoldPoints for a free night at a Tier 6 hotel (Gold Elite members earn 50% bonus points or 30 points/$1 so 90,000 points for a free night at a Tier 6 hotel is equivalent to $3,000 in eligible hotel spending).

While the points earning rate for GoldPoints is double the rate for Marriott or IHG Priority Club and even exceeds Hilton HHonors earnings using Points and Points preference (15 points per $1), the redemption level for a free night is more than double the number of points for any of the comparable major hotel loyalty programs of Marriott, Hilton, IHG, or Hyatt. Only SPG seems to look worse for earning redeemable nights (3 Starpoints/$1 earned for SPG Platinum compared to 30 GoldPoints/$1 earned) at the high end hotels (30,000 Starpoints per free night at Starwood Preferred Guest Category 7 hotel = $10,000 spending).

With hotel programs the mid-tier redemption category hotels tend to be better values as few lowest-tier hotels exist in most hotel loyalty programs. And high-tier properties are either resorts or extremely high demand locations where a member will often find better value by paying cash than redeeming points.

Free Nights Using GoldPoints

GoldPoints free night awards cost 10% less points for each additional night after the first night. (Except for Tier 4 hotels which are only a 9% discount on points due to rounding in GoldPoints favor rather than the frequent guest. )

Tier 1 hotels = 15,000 points for the first night, and 13,500 points for each additional night.
Tier 2 = 25,000 points for the first night, and 22,500 points for each additional night.
Tier 3 = 30,000 points for the first night, and 27,000 points for each additional night.
Tier 4 = 45,000 points for the first night, and 41,000 points for each additional night.
(Should be 40,500 points if the 10% reduction pattern were followed in all hotel tiers).
Tier 5 = 60,000 points for the first night, and 54,000 points for each additional night.
Tier 6 = 90,000 points for the first night, and 81,000 points for each additional night.

Flexible rewards are available for periods with no standard hotel free night award availability at a cost of 50% more for the first night.

The flex night discount for extended stays with additional nights using points is not a simple percentage reduction like standard awards.

Tier 1 = 22,500 points for the first night, and 19,500 points for each additional night.
(13% discount for additional nights.)
Tier 2 = 37,500 points for the first night, and 33,000 points for each additional night.
(12% discount for additional nights.)
Tier 3 = 45,000 points for the first night, and 39,000 points for each additional night.
(13% discount for additional nights.)
Tier 4 = 67,500 points for the first night, and 60,000 points for each additional night.
(11% discount for additional nights.)
Tier 5 = 90,000 points for the first night, and 78,750 points for each additional night.
(12.5% discount for additional nights.)
Tier 6 = 135,000 points for the first night, and 121,500 points for each additional night.
(10% discount for additional nights.)

The lowest discount on points needed for additional free hotel nights is on the highest tier hotels. In contrast, Marriott Rewards offers their greatest free nights discount on top-tier, multi-night stays and it amount to about 40% savings in points for a 7-night stay in a Category 7 hotel using points.

Sample Hotels in each free night using points redemption tier:
Tier 1:
Knoxville, Tennessee – Country Inn and Suites, Knoxville East;
Park Inn, Milpitas, California;
Park Plaza, Toronto Airport;
Radisson Hotel and Suites, Guatemala City, Guatemala ( I stayed at this hotel during the LatinPass mileage run back in 2000 and the hotel guest services representative picked me up at the airport and rode the taxi back to the hotel with me. He was a young man who grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco. The hotel was large and seemed rather luxurious to me for the price I paid.)

Tier 2:
Park Inn, Mainz, Germany
Park Inn, Greenmarket Square, Cape Town, South Africa

Tier 3:
Radisson Hotel, LAX, Los Angeles, California
Country Inn and Suites, Holyoke, Massachusetts

Tier 4:
Radisson SAS Seaside Hotel, Helsinki, Finland
Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Tier 5:
Radisson SAS Marina, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Radisson Plaza Resort, Tahiti, French Polynesia
Radisson Edwardian Vanderbilt Hotel, London, UK

Tier 6:
Radisson Lexington Hotel, New York, New York
Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten Hotel, London, UK
Regent Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France

GoldPoints Plus Elite Membership:

Silver elite for 15 nights or 10 stays in a calendar year.
Benefits include:
25% points bonus (25 points per $1 at Radisson, Park Plaza, and Regent)
Late check-out
Best available room in category booked
10% off weekend rates in Europe, Asia, and Middle East

Gold elite for 35 nights or 20 stays in a calendar year.
Benefits include:
50% points bonus (30 points per $1 at Radisson, Park Plaza, and Regent)
Early check-in and Late check-out
Best available room in category booked
10% off weekend rates in Europe, Asia, and Middle East
Flex night redemption at base award night rate.
Weekend Extend – get 2-for-1 nights or 4-for-2 nights on weekends

The flex night redemption at base award rate actually sounds like the member has the ability to use points essentially without blackouts. This is a huge benefit of top elite status with GoldPoints Plus. The qualification standard of 35 nights or 20 stays for top elite status is a lower standard than the other major upscale programs of Hyatt (25 stays/50 nights), Starwood (25 stays/50 nights), Hilton (28 stays/60 nights), IHG Priority Club (50 nights), and Marriott (75 nights).

Overall: GoldPoints Plus has made great strides in developing a traveler-friendly hotel loyalty program that rewards frequent guests with the opportunity for free hotel nights comparably with the other major hotel loyalty programs.

Current GoldPoints Promotion for 100,000 Bonus Points

Summer 2008 Radisson Hotels and Resorts Points To Go Promotion, June 1- August 31, 2008
Earn up to 100,000 GoldPoints this summer with stays at any of the five Carlson Hotel brands of Radisson, Regent, Park Plaza, Park Inn, and Country Inn and Suites.

5 nights = 5,000 bonus GoldPoints
10 nights = 10,000 bonus GoldPoints
15 nights = 25,000 bonus GoldPoints
20 nights = 50,000 bonus GoldPoints
25 nights = 100,000 bonus GoldPoints

Nights do not need to be consecutive. Nights, not stays, are counted for promotion.

By the numbers:
Park Inn, Milpitas, California room rate check for Sat., June 7 shows $65/night. Assume I could find rates throughout the summer in similar range at various hotels.
Extrapolate to 25 nights over summer = $1,625 for 25 hotel nights.

A frequent guest GoldPoints Plus member earns 15 points per $1 (Park Inn) for 15 nights and 18.75 points per $1 for 10 nights after earning Silver elite membership. (15 points x $65 x 15 nights + 18.75 points x $65 x 10 nights) = 14,625 + 12,187 = 26,812 points.

100,000 points bonus + 26, 812 points as a new member completing promotion over summer 2008 = 126,812 points and possibly Gold elite status if stays are planned to earn elite status along with bonus points for Points to Go promotion. Additional points (500 points per reservation) can be earned through online booking of hotel nights. Points earned are enough for 8 free nights at a Tier 1 hotel ($500-800 value at many locations) or for two free nights using points at a Category 4 hotel (potentially a $400 to $600 value at many locations).
