Choice Privileges has an offer available right now that allows members to buy and redeem points for hotel nights in Paris, London and many other high priced locations for as little as $80 per night.

Choice Privileges offers 10% bonus points on points purchases through December 31, 2012. The regular price for 1,000 points is $11. This offer gives 1,100 points for $11.

image

Choice Privileges limits points purchases to 20,000 points per calendar year. This means a member can buy 22,000 points now for $220 and up to another 20,000 points in January 2013 for $220.

Note: Choice Privileges does not allow points transfers to other members, even a spouse.

You may not combine your points with points belonging to anyone else, including your spouse.

Choice Privileges Rules & Regulations: Other Terms and Conditions Rule #3.

  • Only members from USA and Canada are eligible to buy Choice Privileges points.
  • Reward reservations can be booked only within 60 days of stay for international hotels.

The main point to know about Choice Privileges is reward reservations can only be made for hotels outside the USA within 60 days of your stay, unless you are an elite Platinum (75 days) or Diamond (100 days) member.

Choice Privileges reward nights range from 6,000 to 30,000 points for the vast majority of the 6,000+ hotels worldwide.

Another feature of Choice Privileges are the reward night rates change seasonally. Reward nights at hotels in the USA do not vary nearly as much as the reward nights for international hotels. Many hotels in Europe that cost 20,000 to 25,000 points per night in summer drop to just 8,000 points per night in the low season.

image

Choice Privileges Reward Search for London, England November 26, 2012.

image

Choice Privileges Reward Night search for London, GB returns eight hotels within London proper at just 8,000 points per night. There are several more hotels in the suburbs at 8,000 points per night.

Rate comparison for London using points and paying cash.

image

Quality Crown Hotel Hyde Park = 159GBP = USD $252 per night.

You can buy 8,000 points for $88 through Choice Privileges and with the 10% bonus you will receive 8,800 points. This hotel example reduces the rate from $252 down to $88 for a one-night stay and you will have 800 points remaining in your account.

That is one hotel bargain for London.

Booking a 4-night stay in Paris for $330.

A couple can each buy 16,500 points now for $165 and make separate 2-night reservations. Then notify the hotel in advance that you are a couple with two separate reservations and ask for the same room so you do not need to change rooms after two nights.

image

Paris, France offers several hotels at 8,000 points per night in November 2012.  For November 26 there were 14 hotels available within Paris for 8,000 points per night. Of these 14 hotels, there were 10 hotels available for a 4-night stay Nov 26-30.

image

Comfort Hotel Royal Aboukir Paris 2 = 151 EUR or USD$193 per night.

Or 8,000 points per night which you can buy for $88.

image

Note: The current list of hotels at 8,000 points expire November 30, 2012. These same hotels are currently showing 16,000 to 25,000 points for December and January reward nights.

The new list of hotels at 8,000 points have not yet been loaded. This means hotels will show their full points rate for December and January reward reservations, however, I expect the hotel reward rates for December and January to be adjusted in the next couple of weeks.

You might want to wait until December and verify the hotels with reward nights at 8,000 points before you buy Choice Privileges points if Paris and London are in your plans for December 2012 to February 2013.

Exchanges for Choice Privileges points

You can also get Choice Privileges points from exchanges with American Express Membership Rewards, Amtrak Guest Rewards and Diners Club Rewards.

American Express

  • 1000 Membership Rewards points = 1,000 Choice Privileges points

Amtrak Guest Rewards

  • 5,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards points = 15,000 Choice Privileges points

Diners Club

  • 1,250 Diners Club Rewards points = 2,400 Choice Privileges points

This BiddingforGood.com link shows the hotels in alphabetical order which makes it easier for looking at hotels by brand. You will likely not get points or stay credit in your hotel loyalty program, but a deep hotel rate discount can make it all worthwhile.

Radisson Hotels has a 3-day sale at 53 hotels in the USA and Canada ending tonight at 11:59pm Central Time Zone, Friday, October 12; about 9 hours from this post. The stay must be booked today and completed by October 31 for a 25% hotel rate savings.

I booked a cheap $66 rate (based on $88 regular rate) in San Jose to earn the Radisson free night promotion limited to 50,000 registrants. Even the free night registration link appears to still be available at the moment to get in on the free night deal as one of the first 50,000 to sign up.

The best feature of today’s sale is the rate I booked has flexible day before arrival penalty-free cancellation with no prepayment necessary.

Radisson has frequent sales and this 3-day sale is limited to just 53 hotels.

Still, it worked out well for me on a cheap stay in California with a bonus rebate of one free night at any Radisson in USA or Canada or Caribbean by December 31, 2013.

I am sure my $75 after tax rate for the Radisson in October will be rewarded nicely when I redeem the free night over the next 14 months.

[Update Aug 31: Raffles of HeadforPoints.com blog provided an updated IHG 2-for-1 link in the comments of this post. Long live the 2-for-1!

The analysis in this post  shows a 3-for-2 rate might not be that great a deal for your travels. My subsequent post of August 31 offers a new IHG 2-for-1 rate analysis for London and Barcelona.

Original post content continues below.]

Five years now I have been writing about a special IHG 2-for-1 rate for UK and other IHG hotels in Europe. A couple times a year I’d show how to stay in London for 2 to 8 nights on average rates around USD$100 per night for Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn hotels. Back in 2007 this rate offered the InterContinental Carlton Cannes for about $150 per night. The past few years this 2-for-1 offer was primarily Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn and HI Express.

In my last post on the IHG 2-for-1 rate about seven weeks ago I showed the London Holiday Inn Kensington Forum hotel had standard rooms available for the Olympics August 10-12 for USD$250 per night or an Executive room with lounge access for USD$295 per night (after 2-for-1 rate applied).

A Tower Suite at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen was $340 per night using the 2-for-1 rate discount.

The T&C for this promotion stated it was available through August 31, 2012.

Yesterday, when I updated my Loyalty Traveler Hotel Promotions Guide, I noticed the IHG discount link has been updated and changed. The 2-for-1 option is no longer shown on the page. There is now only the 3-for-2 rate option. Read More…

2012 HELP SHEET #4 – Hotel Loyalty Promotions. April 6, 2012 Update (previous update March 6).

Daily Getaways April 9-May 11, 2012.

One of the most important events of the year happens April 9-May 11with the U.S. Travel Association’s Daily Getaways sponsored by American Express. This is an opportunity to buy hotel loyalty points in several programs including Hilton HHonors, Priority Club, Wyndham Rewards and probably Hyatt Gold Passport and Choice Privileges. Marriott has travel cards at up to 20% discount. Several hotel brands offer discounted stay certificates.

My favorite European hotel promotion for the past several years has been the IHG “2 nights for the price of 1” for hotel discounts in the UK and Europe. This offer brings the rate of many hotels in central London to around $100 per night.

The main thing to know with these discount rates is they are prepaid, nonrefundable hotel room reservations.  The terms also state no Priority Club points are earned. This offer is not good for hotel promotions and points, but at these room rate discounts the points may not really matter. Just be aware that you forfeit the entire prepaid amount if you need to cancel your reservation.

The “2-for-1” and “3-for-2” rates are special offers available through this UK link and discounts are based on the Best Flexible Rate. The default page is set to search “IHG Weekend Breaks” in the UK for 35% off Best Flexible Rate.

IHG Weekend Breaks-1-12

Use the bullet menu on the right to change rate from 35% off weekend rates to the “2-for-1” or “3-for-2” rates.

InterContinental Hotels Group has offered one of the best discounts on hotel rooms in Europe for several years with 2 nights for the price of 1 rates at select hotels. These are prepaid, nonrefundable rates, and most of these rates will not earn Priority Club points, but at these room rate savings the risk can be worthwhile and the lack of points earning justified.

I recall finding a great deal for the InterContinental Carlton Cannes on a 2-for-1 rate a few years back, but these days the 2-for-1 deal is primarily limited to Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and HI Express. I took the 2-for-1 IHG link off my Current Hotel Promotions page this last round since the link I had expired June 30, 2011. A Google search turned up a different link for current IHG discounts at hotels in Europe and the UK.

IHG Green Room Discounts

The Green Room is an IHG site for discount rates at Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels in the UK and Europe.

2 Nights for the Price of 1 and 35% off weekends promotional offers are valid for stays through December 31, 2011.

The burbs of London are almost always available for low rates and during holiday periods the rates in Central London typically drop as low as US$100 per night in my 2-for-1 rate analyses of the past several years.

Here is an example of the 2-for-1 rate at the Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden, Germany (aside: I attended 9th grade in Wiesbaden in 1975 at the U.S. Armed Forces High School. A school year wasted or should I say a wasted year of school?)

Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden November 3-5, 2011

2-for-1 rate (tip: click on graphic and image loads in separate webpage as full size image).

The 2-for-1 rate at Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden is 75EUR per night. The rate is prepaid, nonrefundable and no reservation changes allowed.

Compare the 75EUR rate to other rates at the hotel and you see this 2 Nights for the Price of 1 is a pretty good deal.

A rate check of the Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden hotel on the U.S. Priority Club site shows the lowest rate is a 21-day advance purchase, prepaid rate at 111 EUR per night. The cancellation policy refunds 10% of the room rate if you need to cancel or no-show. You will lose 100EUR per night if you cancel this 21-day advance purchase prepaid reservation compared to losing 75EUR per night with the 2-for-1 prepaid rate.

The lowest flexible cancellation rate is 149EUR per night. This rate allows you to cancel up to 6pm day of arrival with no penalty. The 2-for-1 rate is truly a 50% discount compared to the Best Flexible penalty-free cancellation rate.

This is why you Better Know an IHG Rate for Europe. These IHG discount rates can extend your hotel travel budget substantially when touring Europe.

There are also some good values with Club Carlson double points rates where members earn 40 points/$1 for room rate. This is an extra 2,500 points on a $125 room rate that may only be $10 more than otherwise lowest rates.

This offer is best bonus on low cost hotel stays. Loyalty Traveler post May 16, 2011.

Expedia Rewards –

Double Rewards points for Expedia Vacation Package paid with MasterCard through August 31. Registration required.

Expedia’s new loyalty program earns points for air, hotel and travel package bookings. This is a gamechanger for online travel agencies. Booking airfare through Expedia is a no brainer method for earning additional travel rebates since frequent flyer benefits are unaffected. Hotels are a different matter though since no hotel loyalty points with programs like SPG, Marriott, Hilton and others are earned for Expedia bookings.

Main Expedia Rewards benefits are the ability to earn points when booking travel for other people like family members and friends. And Expedia vacation packages often allow a hotel night to be added for the same price as airfare alone; particularly when traveling to Las Vegas. Loyalty Traveler Analysis March 28.

Hotel Rates Survey for USA States, Cities, and Average Hotel Rates Worldwide

Hotels.com 2010 – Full Year 2010 – Global Hotel Price Index – This is a great resource for finding where hotel rates are high and low around the world. There are tables of USA average hotel rates by state and major cities.

Loyalty Traveler ranks the consumer value of some hotel loyalty promotions on a Five Key Scale.

Five Keys = one of the best hotel loyalty promotions of the year.

Four Keys = high value rebate on the cost of hotel stays.

Three Keys = good value hotel loyalty promotion or rate offer

Two Keys = a bonus value if you play, but not necessarily worth going out of your way.

One Key = There is limited or no value. You are likely paying more than the bonus value.

Rate discounts and loyalty program bonuses are two types of hotel chain incentives to consider when booking travel.

Rankings are subjective and subject to change. Your specific travel pattern may result in some promotions ranking more favorably for you. When assigning a key rank I take into consideration the following factors and probably more:

  • The opportunity for significantly high-value return on hotel spend in terms of future hotel rebate in free nights and discounted hotel nights.
  • Current loyalty program promotions and offers from other hotel chains.
  • Past loyalty program offers and rates for the specific hotel chain and loyalty program.
  • Current economic conditions in the hotel location and travel industry.
