BA are having another premium cabin fare sale until 17 March.

Fares apply for the Easter period and for the Summer 2013.

(Fares apply on AA flights operated as BA codeshares.)

Example:

United has matched:

Interestingly you can pick up First Class for a few hundred pounds more, via Frankfurt:

Good Fares (for Avios collectors at least) appear to be:

San Francisco £2082

JFK £1592, Newark £1582

Las Vegas £1999, Los Angeles £1900

The London City service appears to be in the sale, but on some days over the summer only the late flight is operating, meaning no pre-clearance at Shannon and the normal huge queue at JFK instead.

My trip continued with a reward ticket in First on BA to Miami. Whilst the onboard part of the trip created some challenges (see yesterdays post), I was very happy to arrive early at T5, as I was able to use the Concorde Room for the first time. I had prebooked a cabana (the private day rooms) so I knew I could have some peace, but when I arrived the lounge was almost empty:

I had breakfast before I entered the cabana:

The attendant located my booking from the list he had, and mentioned that 3 of the rooms were booked from 6am that day (including mine). This apparently is unusual, but is a good tip – book in advance if you would like to use one.

The Cabana consisted of a sitting/eating area with a day bed, a large TV and a separate bathroom and shower.

You can order food to the cabana by pressing a small bell on the desk. The WiFi works fine in the room and there are a number of lighting settings, depending on whether you want to work, relax or sleep.

The room was very comfortable, and provided everything you might need for a long or short layover in excellent privacy. My room was at the end of a short corridor and so there was no noise from the lounge.

Overall
Not as lovely as the cabanas at Cathay Pacific’s ‘The Wing’ lounge in Hong Kong, but an excellent experience.

As MH joins OneWorld today, BA has announced which fare classes will earn Avios.

Let the Tier Point runs begin….

Hard on the heals of changes to the way BA operates it’s redemption site, AA has redesigned its booking engine for revenue tickets.

There has always been an odd quirk with AA’s UP fares – where you essentially get a free upgrade. These fares have always been popular with people looking for a few more BA Tier Points as the ‘free’ upgrade gets you in to a higher cabin and earns you more Tier Points too.

The new engine doesn’t, in my view, make it always easy to see what you’re getting in terms of fare class. This is essential if you are going to maximise Tier Points. For example a 2000+ miles flight in Business Class earns 140 Tier Points, where as the same flight in First earns 210. In the example below I searched and found these fares:

The Business and First Class fare is the same.

However, ehwne you click the [+] you notice that the Business Fare books in to I and the First in to A. Not only is the First Class seat on AA’s 767-300 much nicer than the business class, but it earns more Tier points. Of course, check and you will see that there is an all business ticket for $604.

Expanding the display shows the informaion you need:

So today’s tip is to make sure you check before you book these fares.

What I did notice was the difference between the desciption of the Instant Upgrade and Business Class fares. The Business Class fare says ‘Guaranteed Seat in Business Class’. The Instant Upgrade fare omits this line!

I flew London City (LCY) to Amsterdam on Friday.

The trip was pretty uneventful, although we landed on the most distant runway from the airport terminal (a 15 minute drive, from landing to terminal), and the fun started.

We approached the terminal, the pilot stopped the engine, ‘Ping’ went the seatbelt sign and rush went the passengers to get out our belongings.

Then nothing.

Those of us who could see out of the window saw the jet bridge extend and then stop, and 2m short of the plane door.

The Jet Bridge

The pilot apologised and after about 15 minutes they decided that rather than use the steps clearly visible above, they would restart the engines and move the plane the final 2 metres. Apparently the automatic guidance control had been set up for the wrong aircraft type.

We were asked to sit back down, but not to re-stow our bags

About 15 minutes after this we moved, off went the seat belt sign and up came the jet bridge at last.

All told, the time on the ground pretty much equalled the time in the air!

I cannot find any publicity on the BA.com site yet, but a dummy booking reveals a discount being applied from today – about 25% on the example I found – LCY-JFK-MIA for February 2013. It took 12,500 points off a 65,000 point booking originally:

No discount off the taxes or fuel surcharge of course!

I recently flew back from LAX to LHR with BA in F using points and these are just a few, short, observations.

Thomas Bradley International Terminal LAX

This is a terminal that totally hate having had one or two of my worst US Immigration experiences here and so I tend to avoid anything that would cause me to arrive here. Leaving can be pretty bad but I had connected from San Francisco on United and had a long layover so took a gentle stroll from Terminal 6 to TBIT. You do have to steer around passengers, but if you stick to the upper level you get to walk in the sunshine.

TBIT is located between the two sets of parallel terminals at the West End of the airport and is undergoing a huge renovation.

BA operate to and from here, as do many international airlines who do not have their own terminals or don’t share them with other carriers.

I was lucky to have printed by Boarding Pass from online check-in as BA were not open when I arrived – that is how early I was. Online check-in revealed that the plane had been changed from a 777-300 with guaranteed new BA First Class to a 747 which are hit-and-miss. Luckily Flyertalkers told me that as it was a plane with the larger Club cabin it would be new F. My first time you see.

The OneWorld lounge is at the Northern End of TBIT and so you should choose the appopriate security line. There was no wait….none, in fact they seemed pleased to see me and the TSA staff were friendly (gasp!). The lift is almost immediately opposite the exit from Security.

The lounge itself has two areas – First and Club – with OneWorld Emeralds getting in to the F side.

The lounge felt very much like a Qantas or Japan Air lounge – airy, lots of seats and a large food area with hot and cold offerings.

Wide selection of PC's/Macs

The lounge was quite restful except for one passenger I dubbed ‘The Incredible Shouting Woman’. The ISW was seated quite close to me and every mobile phone call – and she was on non-stop for 2 hours – was conducted at a volume that would make the ears of small animals bleed and in a tone that could only be described as offensive. I pity the poor recipients of her calls – all of whom were ‘morons’, ‘stupid, or ‘idiots’. It was a pleasure when we were called for boarding.

There was quite a queue for the lift and some people elected to walk down the stairs.

The BA flight was leaving from a gate on the South side of the Terminal and about a 10 minute walk. There was a Fast Track line and I was on board quickly.

On Flight

I was met at the cabin door and escorted to 1K.

The seat was comfortable and adjacent to the closet in the nose of the plane. I stored my bag there as there is no overhead bin for the first row.

The feature of new First is that most window passengers have larger windows with personal blinds.

I was quickly delivered my champagne and nuts, wash kit and pajamas.

When down the window blind is a lovely blue.

Unfortunately the passenger in 1A was trying to stay awake and so my part of the cabin was bright until we got to Canada which made it hard to sleep.

Food

I was not especially hungry so only had soup and a bacon roll. Possibly the smallest bacon roll in the history of mankind:

Bed Time

The crew made up my bed when I was ready for sleep and I did that until about 2 hours before landing at Heathrow.

Overall

A nice flight – I wish I could have enjoyed more of the service, but as I get older, sleep is precious.

BA has launched its customary Christmas and New Year Premium Cabin Seat Sale, a few days after the one for Europe finished.

AA is matching these fares.

The US deals are not as good as the £1006 deals for last year I am afraid.

Book by 13 November

Travel 14 Dec – 4 Jan

Club Highlights include

Tel Aviv for £659, Dubai for £999

Las Vegas £1473, New York £1247, Miami £1405 and HKG £1899

There are also offers in First.

BA is also offering a deal to Seoul, book between 9-16 November and travel only between Dec 2 and Dec 13

Club – £777 roundtrip – all in

Premium Economy £577

World Traveller £377

Tier Points, can you say Tier points?

BA.Com won’t let you book a ‘same day’ roundtrip as it shows the connection time as too short in SEL. I cannot see this price on non-BA booking sites at present.
