Last week my wife 's aunt passed away. She went to the wake/funeral. The airfare for BUF>ORD was $450. I checked on AA, found award flights that worked and transfered 6K MR points to BA Avios. Presto, RT for 6K Avios and $5.

We frequently go from phl to bna to visit family. These days 3 tix will run close to $1000. With deep avios pockets, ive dropped 27000 avios recently for three round trip tix from dca-bna. I figure the 2.5 hour drive and low mileage costs are well worth it. In addition, my lowly BA silver card gets me admirals club access and free bags. Whats not to like?

There is definite real value here in the right situation. A few weeks ago, I booked 3 last minute tickets (3 days in advance) from NYC => Toronto with cash and points, 4,500 points plus ~$125 for each ticket round trip. The tickets themselves would have been over $1,000 each, so about 19 cents per point.

@mwwalk,

I went to AA.com and pulled up my reservation where I was able to change my seat. I had already been assigned 12A which I was quite happy with so I did not bother changing.

I definitely agree that Avios have their perks, and this is one of the better ways to use them.

Give the train a chance sometime in the future, though. It's very comfortable, and on many trains you'll find outlets & wi-fi, so those five hours can be very productive (if you want them to be). On some trips, train seems to be faster than flying (at least for me, once you factor in shuttling in from airport parking, security, flight time, and then driving back into a city center from the airport).
