If you haven’t already discovered the fantastic-ness of Groupon, then crawl out from under your very large rock and check them out. Groupons basically give you incredible discounts to try out restaurants or services in your area that you otherwise might have overlooked. The discounts are usually in the 50% and up range. That is fantastic for families on a budget! This mommy has a giant love affair with Groupon!
Just a couple days ago, I was able to buy a Groupon for a “Mommy and Me” gymnastics class for Little C on the very same day that I was planning to go and register her at the gym for the regular price. It was perfect timing, and a great discount for something I was about to pay for anyways. I have also previously bought Groupons for discounts at The Gap, for great sushi restaurants, burger joints, hair cuts, massages, and now for gymnastics classes! I also like to keep an eye on Groupons available in cities that I will be visiting on vacation in the upcoming months. I have scored some great deals on attractions to use while I am on vacation this way!
I have to admit that it was only a couple of months ago that I realized you can go through shopping portals to earn miles and points for buying Groupons. If only I could go back in time and get miles for all those Groupons I bought before I knew they I could buy them through shopping portals! When you take the great discounts that Groupon offers, and combine that with earning up to 12 points per dollar though shopping portals, you have pure awesomeness! Now you can have that gymnastics class for half off, plus 400 points to go with it!
I went on a little “hunt” to see which shopping portals offer Groupon as a merchant. Here is a list of what I found.
Shopping Portals offering Groupons:
American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping – 8 miles/$1 spent
Chase Ultimate Rewards Shopping – 12 points/$1 spent
Delta Airlines SkyMiles Shopping – 8 miles/$1 spent
Hawaiian Airlines HawiianMiles Market – 5 miles/$1 spent
Priority Club Shopping – 10 points/$1 spent
United Mileage Plus Shopping – 6 miles/$1 spent
If you are more of a “cash back” kinda guy or gal, then check out Big Crumbs for 6.4% cash-back on your Groupon purchases.
Shopping Portal Promotions and Contests:
While I was on my Groupon hunt, I also found two promotions going on, in addition to the United Airlines 250 bonus miles “Back to School” promotion that I already wrote about here.
Delta Airlines SkyMiles Shopping is giving away 25,000 miles. Entries are earned by simply clicking on their “featured retailers”. No purchase required! Contest runs through 8/31/11.
Priority Club Shopping is also running a promotion that awards bonus miles for spending certain amounts of money through their shopping portal. This promotion ends 8/15/11, so act super fast if you want in on this!
Best Portal for Groupons:
As with everything miles and points related, there is no “one size fits all” best recommendation. It depends on what airlines you prefer, if you are working toward an award in a specific program, if you need to prevent miles from expiring in a specific program, etc…. However, if you have a credit card that offers Chase Ultimate Rewards (such as the awesome Chase Sapphire Preferred card), I would say that going through the Ultimate Rewards shopping portal is usually going to be your best bet for earning points while purchasing Groupons. At 12 points per dollar spent, they offer the highest point per dollar payment for Groupons, and the points earned can be transferred into a number of quality programs such as Continental Airlines and Hyatt.
Whether you are into Groupons or not, definitely look for your favorite retailers on some of these shopping portals. There are very few purchases I make online that I can’t do through some portal in order to gain miles and points. It is an easy way to work towards “giving your family the world for free” for purchases that you were going to make anyway.
Did I leave out your favorite Groupon shopping portal? What have your results been when purchasing Groupons through these portals? Let me know what you think!
