In case you aren’t familiar with the location of the Mommy Points Home Base, I am located about 30-40 minutes North of IAH airport in Houston. The domestic portion of the OneWorld MegaDO kicks off tonight in Dallas at the Hyatt Regency DFW. Originally, my husband was going to road trip it up to Dallas with me for the night, hang out with some “crazy” frequent flyers, and then drive back home to the Houston area tomorrow while I continued on the trip. However, we decided that in the interest of getting more work done for our day jobs today, we would “save time” and fly from IAH to DFW. We got some pretty good fares and were happy with our decision.
Fast forward to this week when the weather forecasts talked of nothing but thunder, lightning, flooding, tornados, doom, and destruction for both Houston and Dallas. I thought, no big deal, if our flight is delayed or cancelled, we will just drive the four hours to Dallas. This morning our house was flooding, lightning was crashing in our front yard, tornado warnings were all around, but our afternoon flight continued to show as “on-time”. The worst of the storm passed around lunchtime, so we headed to the airport to catch our “on time” flight just after lunch. While parking at the airport, I got out our first email from Continental that our flight was delayed. Oops. Note to self: maybe we made a mistake in not driving. We continued into the airport and I asked the check-in agent if we could switch from our prop plane to the 737 jet flight that was now scheduled to leave earlier than our newly-delayed flight. The agent typed very quickly on her computer and made the flight change happen.
Our new flight was then delayed an hour, and then another hour and a half, and then our original flight was cancelled. Hey, at least we made the right call there. Normally that delay would be at least annoying, if not stressful. However, since we are fortunate enough to have access to the United Club, the worst side-effect is a few more glasses of wine than originally intended. My husband was able to use the club WiFi to get some work done, and I was able to spend some “quality time” with Twitter.
Weather is always unpredictable, but I can guarantee two things: 1. We will make it to Dallas for the OWMD one way or another. 2. Having lounge access makes delays so much more bearable.
I look forward to sharing many more MegaDO updates with you….hopefully next time from the actual MegaDO,as opposed to a random airline lounge!
Disclosure: Multiple complimentary wine(s) in the United Club were consumed prior to (and throughout) the writing of this post. If I make no sense, my apologies in advance. It is a theoretical hazard of any MegaDO.
