Update on the American Express Financial Review

A few weeks ago I posted about the unexpected Financial Review that American Express required my mom (aka Grandma Points) to go through if she wanted to keep her Amex account open.  It was unexpected to us as she is not a real card churner, has only one Amex card, does not use it heavily, doesn’t make any unusual purchases, etc.  She did add four family members as authorized users… Read the Rest.

United Months of Miles Bonuses (Finally) Posting!

Oh boy, I think I might see pigs flying as I look out of our front window.  The United Months of Agony Miles bonus miles are finally starting to post.  This has to have been the biggest mess of a promo from 2011.  Heck, evidence of that is that we are still talking about getting miles from it and it is almost March of 2012!  On a positive note though,… Read the Rest.

New Credit Card Added to Top Deals Page

Wanted to pass along that I added a new credit card to my Top 5 Credit Card Deals page.  Though admittedly the page has way more than five top deals – a renaming is probably in order.  The card to crack into the top deals spot today is the Chase Hyatt Visa.  This isn’t a new card, but recently the offer improved to award two free nights after first purchase. … Read the Rest.

End of February Reminders (Elite Status, Continental Card, AirTran Membership Rewards, and more)

I know February is a short month, but dang did it ever fly by!  This is a busy time of year in the miles and points world since elite status with most programs runs through the end of February for the previous year.  On top of that, there are some other promotions and opportunities that are ending as the calendar turns to March, so here are a few reminders about… Read the Rest.

It’s the time of year for hotels to do some evaluation and make category adjustments for their individual hotel properties.  Today it is Marriott that released their category lists for the following year.  The good news is that this time they released their list with some advance notice.  Hotels can be reserved at their current category rates until March 14th.  After that date the new category list will be in effect.  If… Read the Rest.

Timing Credit Card Applications and Minimum Spending Requirements

Over the weekend I received an email from a reader who was in a bit of a pickle because meeting the minimum spending requirement on their new Amex card is proving more difficult than they thought.  I don’t have all the details of which Amex and what the minimum spending requirement is, but they are hitting a wall since their daycare doesn’t take Amex and their utilities don’t accept Amex. … Read the Rest.

The Amex 1099 Back Pedal

As you may know, there has recently been some uproar (or at least moderate roaring) in the miles and points community about the 1099′s that were recently issued by both Citibank and American Express.  The Citibank 1099′s were issued to those who received AAdvantage miles via signing up for a checking or savings account.  Citibiank valued the miles at 2.5 cents a piece, which is a bit high to begin… Read the Rest.
