Good news for anyone looking to boost their Hilton HHonors accounts with a credit card sign-up bonus, as there is a limited time offer out now through November 30th for the Hilton HHonors Amex.  This card previously had a sign-up bonus in the 40,000 – 50,000 point range (depending on which offer you applied for), but through the end of November you can get 40,000 HHonors points when you spend $750 in the first three months, and then an additional 25,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 in the first six months.  That is a total of 65,000 bonus points.  This card has no annual fee, and you also receive HHonors Silver status while you have the card.

Also, those who have the Amex Surpass card will now earn 12x on spending at Hilton Hotels as opposed to the previous 9x beginning on November 1st.  That card carries a $75 annual fee, but you do get HHonors Gold status for the first year, which is a very solid mid-tier status that entitles you to free breakfast for two, free internet, potential upgrades, and potential lounge access.  Though if you want HHonors Gold status on an ongoing basis, the best card for that in my opinion is the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card which carries a slightly higher annual fee at $95 annually, but conveys Gold status for as long as you hold the card.

Both of the American Express Hilton cards make you eligible for both AXON and GLON awards, which can result in significant savings for stays of four nights or longer at one of the higher category Hilton properties.

I’ll do a full post soon comparing all of the current options in the credit card world for HHonors points (as there are many options), but wanted to share the word about the limited time sign-up bonus increase for the Amex Hilton card as soon as I heard in case anyone was about to apply for that card.

Disclosure: I do not receive a commission for either of the Amex Hilton offers linked in this post.  They are just the best deals out there for those cards (that I am aware of).  I do receive a commission if you are approved for the Citi Hilton Reserve card using my affiliate link.

What exactly can we do with 40,000 points? I’ve done a quick searches and every hotel seem to require at least 50,000 points per night. Is that a regular rate? Or was I just unlucky?

  2. Dave says:

Ugh! I just applied for this during my AOR last Wed. for 50k points! Do they do offer matches like Chase does?

  3. Chris says:

Thanks for the tip! Was thinking of getting this one. 65K for no annual fee – plus another 18K if you can do your 3K all at 6X categories (not hard with grocery, gas, phone/cable, etc.). No brainer!

  4. Jay says:

Heya! Thank you for this! I want to do a Hilton AOR. Amex+BOA+BOH+Citi(2 browser) etc.

So a post with all the current offers would be simply AWESOME! :D

  5. Jim says:

Amex matching is VERY YMMV. In my experience, they will not match, but will say, “sorry, here’s X,XXX HH Points for your troubles”.

  6. dhammer53 says:

    @Miguel,

There are plenty of non-Hilton opportunities out there. ie Hilton Garden Inn, Emb Suites etc that have properties under 40,000 points per night. Also, cash and points.

I checked the San Francisco Bay area for this Saturday night and this is what I found:

    Hilton Concord – 30,000 points
    Hilton Sonoma – 40,000 points
Hilton San Fran Financial District 25,000 points + $85.
Hilton Oakland airport 30,000 or 15,000 points plus $50.

All you have to do is search where you want to stay.

  7. Patrick says:

Bummer. I just opened my AMEX Hilton last week!

After seeing this, I called but didn’t get anywhere.
    Better luck next time.

  8. TrvlGuru says:

I haven’t found anywhere on either AX or HH that shows the 12x points. Where is this info?

  10. tommy says:

@Chris., where did you find information of 6X categories (not hard with grocery, gas, phone/cable, etc.)?

  11. Chris says:

@tommy – click on the app link – info on earning rates is on the left hand side under the picture of the card.

  12. rxgeek says:

Can I churn this Amex card? I still have mine from last year.

  13. tommy says:

dummy question, but if we have our Gold STatus till 2014 on a promo., after apply for this card we still retain our gold status right.. ?

Thinking of doing this and two Citi HH VisaS with no annual too

  14. Michael says:

I’ve had this card since 2005. How do I qualify for the bonus again if you currently have the card? Can you just apply for a second one?

  15. mommypoints says:

Sorry I can’t do each question right now, but it’s “preschool pick-up time”. Here’s a few quick answers:
-Regarding churning: Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer Hilton HHonors™ Card from American Express® account within the last 90 days.
-Regarding getting matched to this offer: you can try, but Amex’s days of matching the offer got much more difficult every since the “Bump the Bonus” debacle last summer. It is worth asking, but don’t hold your breath.
-Regarding the coming 12x. I got that info from a message in a bottle dropped by a carrier pigeon. Or a PR company. They didn’t say it was top secret info, and they are also the ones that told me about the 65K link, so I assume it is accurate info. We should all know soon enough.
-HHonors points can be very valuable if used for certain properties. They can be worth very little in some instances as well. It all depends on how you plan to use them.

  16. Jeff says:

    Nice find!

  17. James says:

How do you know the Surpass will be at 12pt/$ in November?
And how long will that last for?

  18. Lily says:

I just got my AMEX Hilton last month. Can I ask for a match on the difference (20k points) of the promotions? Does AMEX allow this?

  19. Erica says:

What about the foreign transaction being 2.5/2.7%….is that still good??

  20. Pam says:

I tried getting it matched (since I applied 2 weeks ago). No luck! FYI

  21. Jenn says:

I echo those who’ve said that a Hilton comparison post would be awesome–I love your posts! If you have any thoughts on the value of Hilton Points’ transfer value, that would be great. We don’t typically stay in hotels, but we do fly a lot, and are trying to decide whether a Hilton card makes sense and if so, which one(s). Thanks!

  22. Mitch says:

I previously had the surpass card but cancelled. Is there a time limit from closing that account to applying for the “regular” Amex Hilton card of which you are aware or would Amex consider these cards different enough that I might qualify for this bonus?

  23. Mitch says:

Never mind, sorry. Missed the summary above. Thanks

  24. Peter says:

I was approved for this card 2 weeks ago. I called AMEX today and was told that the 65000 offer is targeted so they couldn’t match it but if this ever becomes a public offer the rep said they would increase my bonus. Does anyone know if this will become public soon?

  25. Allen says:

I wrote a secure message explaining how I received a 50K bonus recently and was wondering if I could get the additional 15K match. I went into how I was a good Amex customer and that I hold several of their cards. 8 hours later I received a canned message back from India saying basically “no”. I see American Express should really be named Indian Express, as that seems to be where their message center seems to be.

  26. Jay says:

    @Allen… easy on the racism.

  27. Erica says:

Hey, I just got this card, is there a way to convert it to use for miles too??

  28. Kalboz says:

Was told if already have Surpass HH AMEX card, it is possible to get the card but not the points, true?

  29. Daniel says:

Eligible Purchases means purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

Has anyone had trouble getting the 6x at grocery store buying prepaid cards?
