I received an email this afternoon from United announcing that they are offering 20% off award flights from the US (other than Hawaii) and Canada to Europe for travel between 1/15/13 – 3/13/13 if you book between today and November 15th. The discount is only off economy saver award tickets, and some additional restrictions are imposed for these tickets, including that they must be on United operated flights. With this discount, the mileage price goes from 60,000 RT to 48,000 RT. I love seeing a discount on award tickets, but I sure do wish United would offer a standing off-peak Europe discount the way that US Airways and American offer.
For example, travel to Europe on miles using the off-peak US Airways award chart is just 35,000 miles RT for an economy ticket – and that drops to 30,000 RT for economy if you have the US Airways MasterCard. Travel to Europe during the off-peak time on American Airlines is 40,000 RT in economy, so even with this 20% discount, United is still not the least expensive mileage option for some “off season” dates to Europe.
However, if you were hoping to fly on a United reward ticket (in economy) to Europe during that time frame, then now is a good time to book. The offer dates even include part of the Spring Break week for many in my neck of the woods, so perhaps some families can take advantage of this limited time deal!
