Today the 75,000 point American Express Business Gold Rewards offer has returned!  Last year we saw this very limited time offer pop up a few times throughout the year, and hopefully we are now seeing the same trend for this year.  The offer is for the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card that will award 75,000 Membership Reward points after spending $10,000 in the first four months.  This is greatly increased over the standard offer of no sign-up bonus points, and even a substantial increase over the targeted 50,000 point offer that I got in on last year.  In other words, 75,000 points is a big deal these days.  That said, $10,000 is a bunch of spending for many people, so don’t over-commit yourself.  If meeting spending requirements is an issue, you would be better served by steering away from offers that require a large amount of spending, like this one.

If you would be more comfortable with a lower amount of spending, but still want Membership Reward points, I would recommend considering the offer for 50,000 Membership Reward points after spending $1,000 in the first three months via the American Express Premier Reward Gold (personal) card.  This is a targeted offer, but many have received it via using this Card Match Tool from creditcards.com.  I used the Card Match Tool successfully a couple of weeks ago myself!

Keep in mind that the Business Gold Reward Card is a business card while the Premier Reward Gold card is a personal card.  There are no restrictions about getting the sign-up bonus for both, unlike if you are trying to get two personal or two business Membership Rewards earning cards.  The terms related to this sign-up bonus state: “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product or any Business Gold, Green or Platinum Card account within the last 12 months.”

Application: The Business Gold Rewards Card® from American Express OPEN

This is not my affiliate link but here are the official details from the last time this was offered in January, and they are the same now for this offer (other than the expiration date).

  • LIMITED TIME OFFER: Earn 75,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $10,000 in the first 4 months of Card membership.
  • 3X points on airfare
  • 2x points on purchases in the U.S. for advertising in select media, gasoline at U.S. stand-alone gas stations, and shipping
  • 1X points on other purchases
  • Points are earned only on eligible purchases. Bonus points limitations apply.
  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $175
  • Introductory annual fee for Additional Gold Cards in the first year is $0; then, $50 for the first Additional Gold Card and no fee for other Additional Cards
  • Terms & Restrictions Apply.  Offer expires March 14, 2013.

Membership Reward points are flexible points than can either be used as cash, for gift cards, or transferred to a variety of hotel and airline partners.  Here is a post with some of my favorite Membership Reward uses.  I personally often take advantage of periodic transfer bonuses to the British Airways Avios program and use those points to fly on short American Airlines flights.  The transfer bonuses have been as high as 50% in the last year.  Of course there is no guarantee of what will happen in the future, but those bonuses have been very helpful to my family in the past.

Here is a full list of hotel and airline partners (though not all transfer 1:1 – some are better, some are worse):

Good luck if you decide to apply for an Amex today!  I wouldn’t be shocked to see the 75K offer return later in the year, just based on history.  However, you never know for sure.

Disclosure: I do receive a commission if you are approved for a credit card using the Card Match tool, but not for the Amex 75K business card.  It is just the best available offer for that card.  ;)   As always, thanks for your support.

    Got a question for you.

If one has a Business Platinum card, after 12 months, what does one have to do to get the Business Gold card?
Cancel the Platinum card and then apply for the gold, or can they apply without cancelling?

Same question for those offers where they mention 90 days instead of 12 months.
Cancel the existing card and then apply or does it not make a difference?

    Thanks! :)

Hello Mommy Points from a fellow Texan!
My question is inline with Jay’s. I have had the Biz Gold for close to 2 years and I am debating should I cancel it to prepare for the future offer or keeping it.

What would be a general way? I do have the personal AMEX to maintain the MR.

Jay, recently many of the business card offers with Amex have had the 12 month language. I interpret it as 12 months between products. As in cancel biz card in Feb 12 and then reapply 12 months later in Feb 13 (or March 13 to be super safe). Of course, there are always reports of people having better luck than that…
Jonathan, if you want to get the bonus again in the future, then cancel and sit out for a year. Keep the personal card to maintain the MR points in the meantime. ;)

I just applied for the 25k points offer for $2k spend when I was doing a churn. Just got the card yesterday. When I called to try to get them to honor this offer they said there is no way to do that. I just want to be sure before I give up on that. Sometimes they tell you on the phone what is easiest to get the call over.

  5. mommypoints says:

Chris, they have gotten very strict on not honoring an offer different than the one you applied for….sadly. You can always try again, but I really haven’t heard many success stories recently.

Too bad for the people who were duped into getting the 25K Biz Plat. :p

Trying to figure out my AMEX strategy here too. Had the Biz Gold rewards card and closed it in April 2012. Currently have a personal AMEX Platinum card that I opened just before closing my Biz Gold card in April 2012 and not planning on renewing that. Don’t really wanna part with my membership rewards points just yet but it’s looking like all MR cards have that 12 month stipulation now. Was thinking of waiting til May and applying for the Biz Gold card again then canceling the personal Plat card shortly after that and hopefully getting a refund for the annual fee (within 60 days I think?). Any other suggestions?

  8. mommypoints says:

HikerT, they are different cards with different benefits. I don’t think anyone was duped. ;)
KevininRI, the personal cards seem to mostly have a different term (last I checked) that has a 90 day clause for different personal products. Assuming you apply for one with that terminology, you could theoretically apply for say a personal PRG card any time in the next year and then cancel your Plat before it renews. You are then covered with protecting the MR and it won’t impact you getting a biz card and the bonus.

Just applied for the Biz card and got approved, and I used your link…thanks for highlighting it first!

I am not always the biggest fan of this blog, as I sometimes find a lot of the info not very useful to me or my type of travel, but credit where credit is due. This was a useful piece of info and exactly the type of offer I have been waiting for every day, so MANY THANKS. Especially for posting it since it was not a referral link. Much respect for posting it because it was the best offer out there.

  12. Antonio says:

Now, if they would just offer the damn Plat personal 100k for 3k spend again….still furious I missed it.

  13. Chris says:

Yes, I guess I was “duped” into the 25k pt offer. I was doing a churn and this about the only card I don’t have at this point so I was just glad to get it. Wish I would have waited a week, but oh well. Thanks for following up MommyPoints. You are the best! I enjoy your blog and have saved a lot of money following it.

  14. mommypoints says:

DJ, congrats on a great offer! Biz offer isn’t my link this time around, but I still very much appreciate the thought. ;) Enjoy your points!
Antonio, sorry the site doesn’t often match up with your needs, but glad it did today. Fingers crossed that one will come back as well. ;)
Chris, you got the biz Platinum? Don’t be sad, it is a great card if that is the one you got! Fingers crossed this offer comes back when you are again eligible. ;)

  15. HikerT says:

lol, lots of people suffering from stockholm syndrome for sure! See comments here by those who weren’t being heavily compensated the biz plat and tried to warn readers from being duped as it would disqualify them from the 75K biz gold.

  16. KevininRI says:

mommypoints, there is a 90 day clause for different personal cards such as the PRG card: “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer ZYNC®, Green or Gold Card or Platinum Card® account within the last 90 days.” So I think my only options (if I want to keep my MR account active when I don’t renew the Platinum card) is either to apply for a PRG personal card now without any bonus or wait and apply for a biz gold card after those 12 months are up and get whatever bonus is offered at that time.

  17. ParanoiaTX says:

Amex is still refusing to give me my 75k points from the last round of this. Grr…

  18. mommypoints says:

Paranoiatx, what is their stated reason? another bonus you got or didn’t register you under that promo?

  19. jimmy says:

Can i apply for both Amex gold Business (75k) and Amex Premier Rewards Gold (50k)?

  20. mommypoints says:

One bonus does not exclude you from the other, so in that regard yes.
