PointBreaks hotels are one of the best deals available for award nights: just 5,000 Priority Club points will get you a free night at one of their featured properties.  The list of discounted properties for this winter was leaked earlier this morning and Priority Club has tweeted that they will officially be released later today.  However, Loyalty Lobby already has a complete listing of these hotels, giving you a headstart in the game.

Pointbreaks hotels are select properties that have been reduced from their usual award levels of 10,000-50,000 points and now that many properties have increased in point levels, this can be a good way to still find value from your Priority Club points.  Considering you can easily earn 5,000 points after just 1-3 paid nights, this is one of the fastest ways to rack up a free night’s stay!  Otherwise, Pointbreaks hotels are such a value that this redemption is one of the few where buying points might make sense if you don’t already have enough and one of the listed hotels works for you.  Using the Points + Cash technique to accumulate points, it will cost $35 out-of-pocket for the 5,000 points you need for a free night.

The current list of hotels will be officially updated throughout the day and is valid for stays through March 31.

As I see it, there are a few ways to use this to your advantage:

  • Use the list as inspiration for a getaway.  While some of the participating properties are uninspriring, others such as the Intercontinental Fiji may make a fun stay if you otherwise didn’t have ideas on where to go!
  • Check any existing award reservations you have through March 31 to see if they are participating properties that you can rebook at the lower price.  Cancellation policies are usually pretty lenient, so as long as you have 1-2 days notice, you should be able to cancel at no penalty for a PointBreaks hotel (assuming there is one that fits your existing plans).
  • Book now for hotel stays you think you might need, but are not positive.  The lenient cancellation plan allows you to book now even if you are uncertain of your plans, and cancel later if needed, potentially saving you lots of points “just in case”.

Frankly, none of the properties are enough to sway me to convince a different vacation this weekend, but I hope others can take advantage of this list!

And this is why PointBreak opportunities don’t last very long, especially for the decent ones. The greedy ones among us go ahead and reserve the entire 2 months in all the decent hotels “just in case” they might use them, thus quickly taking them off the market for others who may actually be able to use them. And people really wonder why PC allows such lenient cancel policies on these pointbreaks? Heck, all these quick, speculative bookings are doing them a favor when they know full well most of these bookings are are never going to be used and thus they will never actually have to cough up these rooms for 5,000 points. They aren’t dumb. They know they can depend on the greedy among us.

@Chris, I’m very sorry if that’s how you interpreted my suggestion. In my mind, these “just in case” bookings are really for destinations you intend to go to, but aren’t positive about…i.e. whether or not you’ll make a family event on a specific day. Certainly not holding two months worth of rooms on speculative bookings. I’ll see if I can clear up the language in my post, but I do think everyone’s own morals should guide them to a correct decision.
