Those that book tickets with JetBlue between February 1 and June 1, 2009, and lose their jobs after February 17 can receive a refund for their reservation of up to nine people. The press release can be found here.

Overall I’d say this is good marketing on the part of JetBlue, although it doesn’t seem like there’s all that much upside here. Are people that think they might lose their jobs really taking vacations right now? Would someone that feels secure in their current position consider this when booking travel? If so, will they choose JetBlue because they might get a refund? I can see a little upside here, but not a whole lot.

Still, there’s no downside, so a minor thumbs up to to JetBlue for this.

For a lot of people the layoffs are a bit blindsliding, so I don’t think it is an issue that people aren’t booking vacations. I imagine there are folks that are doing so and don’t think they will be laid off… but inevitably will.

Very few people expect a layoff and go on with life as planned. I generally feel my job is safe, but I will never say that with confidence.

And hey, it’s working for Hyundai. Granted, a car is slightly more costly than a plane ticket, but Hyundai is reporting solid sales – one of the very few seeing an increase over the same period last year – due in part to the “return your car if you lose your job” promo. Great publicity for JetBlue. I would think that the casual traveler would more strongly consider JetBlue because of this promo.

    Lucky –

Have you ever flown B6? I’ve never seen you weigh in on them, either on your blog or on FT. They seem to be very polarizing airline — you either love them, or you hate them. Just curious as to what you think.

hobo13 — I’m firmly in the “JetBlue rocks” camp. I’ve probably made five or so roundtrip flights with them over the years. Nothing beats the generous legroom, TV, snacks, and great service. If only they were part of a *real* FF program!

I’m gonna have to disagree with you on this one, Lucky. Maybe you’ve never had a flight canceled by them due to weather, irrops, etc. They have absolutely no margin in their system for such events. I’ll agree, they are a fine airline to fly when the sun is shining….. but unlike Florida, that just isn’t always the case in the Northeast! :-)

You’re absolutely right, hobo13. I thought you were asking more about the onboard experience. My feelings about the onboard experience and my feelings about the company as such are two different things.
