Thanks Keith. As far as the booking process goes, I used the British Airways award tool to help me plan. The important segments, YYZ-HKG on Cathay Pacific and NRT-JFK on JAL, were available from the beginning. At the time the HKG-MNL and HKG-NRT were booked in first class, while only business class was available MNL-HKG. Over time first class became available on HKG-MNL, although HKG-MNL switched from a three cabin plane to a two cabin plane. Fortunately there was a 777-300ER flying that day with two award seats in first class. As time progressed, all four of our flights became the new configuration, which was a pleasant surprise.

All around a painless experience, especially given that we didn’t have to pay any change fees since we kept the same route, despite switching flights several times.

Yes Cube, I mean that he has earned those miles both through credit card spend as well as the original sign-up bonuses for the credit cards. Most American Airlines credit cards come with a 25,000 mile sign-up bonus, so having a few of them can increase mileage balances pretty quickly.

Can you talk a little more on what you mean by “amassed about 300,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles through credit card spend (and churning)?”
