While Hilton’s first quarter 2013 promotion hasn’t yet been officially announced, the following was leaked on the Hampton Inn Boston Logan Airport Facebook page (though subsequently deleted):
“Double your HHonors! During the promotion, registered HHonors members can choose to earn double points or double miles between January 7th and March 31, 2013″
I guess at least we know what to expect now!
The thing about Hilton is that while their points might not be as valuable as those issued by Hyatt or Starwood, it’s possible to earn a lot of points with hotel stays. You get 10 base points per dollar (which are doubled through this promotion), five additional points per dollar if you choose not to double dip with an airline partner, and 10-12 points for paying with the Hilton American Express Surpass or Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve. That’s 35-37 points per dollar spent, which is a pretty awesome return.

what is usually the better deal on the double dip, points or miles? or does it depend on the length of stay?

@ Carl — Depends on the length of the stay. The choices are five bonus points per dollar, one bonus mile per dollar or 500 miles per stay (100 miles at lower tier brands). I value five Hilton points more than one airline mile, so for me that’s a no brainer. For cheap one night stays getting airline miles is probably worthwhile, but otherwise I think going “all in” on points makes the most sense.

Hilton is my hotel program of choice since the others (especially Hyatt) cut back on their lucrative promos in 2010. Hilton has the best promos – including Virgin Atlantic tie-ins – and they almost always have something going. Plus, far more properties across multiple varied brands, and free breakfast + lounge access for mid-tier elites.

Unless there’s a compelling airline promo, I always select points and points for my HHonors earning style. Diamonds earn 20 points per dollar spent with this plan. Then add on the credit card points, double points promos, and you have the potential to earn lots of points.

Hi, I have a Amex HH card (not the surpass), it only earn 6points per dollar at Hilton property, how did you get 10 base points per dollar?

@ Jen — You need the Surpass or Reserve to get 10-12 points per dollar spent.

I got a mail from Hilton today saying they’re changing their points / status plan next year. Sad face!
