Through February 6, 2013, Hyatt is offering a 10-30% bonus on the purchase of Gold Passport points, with the following thresholds:
- Purchase 1,000 to 9,000 points and get a 10% bonus
- Purchase 10,000 to 29,000 points and get a 20% bonus
- Purchase 30,000 to 40,000 points and get a 30% bonus
Points ordinarily cost 2.4 cents per mile to purchase, so the cost only goes down from there with this promotion. The most points you can purchase per account in a year is 40,000, so maxing out the promotion you could purchase 40,000 points for $960, and you’d receive a total of 52,000 points, which comes out to ~1.85 cents per point.
I value Gold Passport points at ~1.6 cents each, but if you don’t have a stash and are considering staying at a high end Park Hyatt, this could be a fantastic value.
For example, purchasing 44,200 points (more than enough for two nights at any top category hotel) would cost you $816. That’s enough points for two nights at the Park Hyatts in Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and the Maldives, for example, a cost that’s well below the published rate at all those hotels.
So it can make sense to take advantage of this promotion if you’re a Hyatt person with upcoming Park Hyatt stays, in my opinion.
