American consistently offers great deals on off peak awards in many markets. For example, you can fly to Hawaii for 17,500 AAdvantage miles each way in coach in the off season, which includes travel between January 12 and March 8 and August 22 and December 15.

Here’s a promotion that’s pretty… interesting. For travel between February 8 and March 13, 2013, American is offering a further 2,500 mile discount in each direction when traveling on American flights, so you pay just 15,000 AAdvantage miles one-way for travel between the US(mainland)/Canada and Hawaii.

The catch — and this is what makes this promotion slightly ridiculous — is that you have to book by phone, which incurs a $25 phone ticketing fee if you’re not an Executive Platinum member. Furthermore, this promotion is only for travel in the next month or so, and American charges a $75 close-in ticketing fee for travel within 21 days, which takes us through March 2, 2013.

So really this promotion offers a 5,000 mile roundtrip discount… if you’re willing to pay $100 or so.

Keep in mind that if you have an AAdvantage Citi credit card you can get a 10% reimbursement on the miles used, bringing the cost down to 27,000 AAdvantage miles roundtrip.

Either way this is a value that’s tough to beat from the east coast to Hawaii, especially with the weather on the east coast at the moment.

    Given the fare wars out of NYC at least lately for $400-450 roundtrips to Hawaii, this promotion doesn’t seem that exceptional.

    Yes, revenue fares might be subject to minimum stay requirements, restricted days of the week for the overwater segments, and so forth, but they at least earn miles and don’t carry a phone booking/close-in ticketing fee.
