$49 Fare from Chicago to Newark

Feb 14th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

I’ll give a bit of credit where it’s due:  AirTran has really helped to drop fares out of Chicago.  It has a 2-day sale starting today that has $39 fares from Chicago to Boston and $49 fares from Chicago to Newark.  Before AirTran came along, the Newark fares started at double that price.  What a [...]

Reason Airport Security Is a Joke, #372

Feb 14th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Two air marshals were arrested and charged with using their positions to smuggle narcotics on airplanes.  The geniuses were brought into custody after an informant delivered 33 pounds (?!) of cocaine to the home of one of the air marshals.  Incredibly, the pair were willing to risk their lives and career for a combined $67,000.  [...]

Great Summer Fare to London

Feb 13th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Quick note:  Virgin Atlantic (bookable via Travelocity) has a $196 r/t fare from New York to London during the summer months (with tax, it comes to about $400.  I think it’s also available from Boston).  This is crazy cheap for summer travel—about half what you’d usually pay.  I’m sure this will go quickly.
(thanks to the [...]

Human Head Found in Passenger’s Luggage

Feb 13th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

(Thanks to OTR reader Sanj for the heads up)…
Baggage screeners at Fort Lauderdale’s airport discovered a human head in the luggage of a passenger arriving from Cape Haitien, Haiti.  Myrlene Severe said that the head was related to her belief in voodoo—the head was being used to ward off evil spirits.  Apparently it didn’t work.

Turkish Airlines Plane Skids Off Runway at JFK

Feb 13th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

A Turkish Airlines A340 skidded off the runway while landing at JFK airport last night.  No one was injured, but it took workers about an hour to get passengers off the plane.  New York City received about 27 inches of snow yesterday, so investigators are (obviously) looking into whether weather played a role.

Sir Freddie Laker, Dead at 83

Feb 10th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Sir Freddie Laker, the aviation pioneer responsible for introducing cheap fares across the Atlantic, died Thursday at the age of 83.  Laker ran Laker Airways, a British carrier, that flew the Laker Skytrain from London to New York.  The airline offered $100 fares in 1977, 2/3 below what competitors were charging, making it possible for [...]

Technical Difficulties at the OTR

Feb 9th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Some of you visiting the OTR yesterday may have gotten an error page suggesting that I had screwed something up with this site.  That was not exactly true.  Typepad, the software I use to write this thing, had some networking issues (well beyond my technical knowledge), which led to some people being able to read [...]
