Economy service on Emirates actually wasn't bad...the 33-34" pitch + literally hundreds of movies & TV shows on demand made the flight go very, very quickly. However, their connections are unbelievably terrible. Walking through that airport, there are dozens and dozens of people asleep on the ground at 3 o'clock in the morning awaiting a connection to Peshawar or Khartoum or wherever. It's brutal.

The $4k is actually a good deal, but not a good enough deal, since I was paying for the flight. CO's BizFirst seats are more comfortable than Emirates' biz class, though the IFE (and service, to some extent) aren't even in the same league. I like Emirates quite a bit, but I agree with you -- there is no such thing as a luxury trip that includes a 9 hour layover.

I was actually wondering about how long it would take Emirates to get you to India. Coincidentally, on the flyertalk AMEX board the other week, we were discussing the illogical bids people make for AMEX's "Going Once" travel auctions (illogical in the sense that you could put together your own package for less money). One trip was a "luxury package" to India, including biz class travel from NYC to New Delhi on Emirates. I was suspicious about the routing because the trip included a "day room" in Dubai. Sure enough, I looked at the flights and they seemed to be what you are experiencing. :
