Don’t Worry, Northwest’s DC-10s Aren’t Disappearing

Dec 7th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

For geeky (in a good way) airplane people, there’s some good news:  Seven of Northwest’s ancient DC-10s, which many (?) thought were headed for the Arizona desert, will be sold to ATA, which must’ve bought the old birds for next to nothing.  Good for them.

Farts Lead to Flight Diversion

Dec 6th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Every once in a while, a story comes along the reminds me why I get up an write this stupid thing every day:
An American Airlines flight from Washington to Dallas was forced to divert to Nashville after passengers smelled smoke on the airplane.  I’ll cut to the [...]

Dec 5th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

You may remember a couple of years ago when JetBlue announced that they would be taking delivery of a whole bunch of Embraer 190s, observers said that they were growing too fast.  Turns out the observers were correct.  JetBlue announced that they would take 10 190s next year instead of the previously announced 18.  They [...]

Island Air to Cut Flights, Employees Because of go!

Dec 5th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

I’m not sure why I’m fascinated with the airline situation in Hawaii, but I am — which means that you’ll have to bear with me a bit.  With the entrance of go! into the intra-Hawaii marketplace, it’s been a bit of a bloodbath over there, with fares being slashed and money being lost (and whining [...]

Continental Says No to Cockfighting

Dec 5th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Continental Airlines is taking a brave stand against, um, cockfighting.  Yes, the Houston-based carrier has decided that the only reason they have been flying so many adult roosters to Guam is because people are using them to fight other roosters.  Because of that, they’ve decided that they will no longer ship live adult poultry.  Because [...]

Ryanair Cannot Fire Napping Flight Attendant

Dec 1st, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Ryanair had fired a flight attendant who roped off a row of seats, read a book, then took a nap during a flight.  Seems reasonable enough.  But not to an Irish court.  An Irish employment court has forced Ryanair to reinstate the tired flight attendant, saying that the disciplinary action had "shortcomings."  Ryanair, to its [...]

Varig to Change Name to Nordeste

Dec 1st, 2006 | By Jared Blank

A great era in aviation is over:  Brazil’s flag carrier Varig, which launched in 1927, will disappear and change its name to Nordeste following a reorganization.  On the plus side, it’s going to double the number of aircraft it flies.  Sad to see a longstanding name in aviation disappear.
