I have absolutely no idea what you’d do with it, but someone is selling a 727-200 on eBay. It’s not in flying condition, but it’s a steal with a buy it now price of only $100,000. Here are some photos of the plane in better times when it was flying for Northwest and Sunworld. If you’re married to the type of person who would kill you for bringing home something crazy, I think you might as well go big and drag this baby into your front yard. For less than the price of 2 BMW 5 Series, you can have a 727. I’m sooooo jealous if you buy it.

(Thanks to reader Tom for the heads up):
Interesting story about JetBlue entering the JFK/BOS - Pittsburgh markets. Average fares were cut nearly in half which, you’d think, would drive people to fly JetBlue. But in the end, US Airways, which had been ripping people off for years, lowered prices and ended up carrying 125 additional passengers each day on the routes than they had before JetBlue came along. A really good read about how lowfare carriers actually affect the market.

Still looking for that cheap vacation to Paris? You probably won’t beat this: Tourcrafters is offering a 3 night package to Paris, including air from New York and room at the Holiday Inn Bibliotheque for a ridiculous $389. The price is good November 15 through March 15 (excluding Xmas and New Year’s, of course). You have to book by June 29th. Can’t beat this one…

Passengers on a Continental flight from Amsterdam to Newark last week said that service stunk - literally.
A problem with the toilets caused the flight to stop in Shannon, Ireland, overnight as mechanics tried to fix the issue. The flight re-departed the next day, but the plumbing backed up again, leaving only 1 toilet working for the 200 people. To me the best part was that flight attendants were telling people not to eat or drink anything as they were doing their meal service.

Zoom Airlines launches service today between New York (JFK) and London Gatwick, and fares are quite cheap. They seem to start at about $77 to London and $199 back — about $435 including all taxes for summer travel. That’s about half what others are charging. Premium Economy fares (about 36" of legroom) are in the $825 range. Be careful when you book, though, as flights stop in Bermuda a couple of days a week.

American Airlines recently announced that it will launch nonstop flights from New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Minneapolis, a route that is dominated by Northwest. In a petty and vengeful move, Northwest just announced that they will launch nonstop flights from LaGuardia to Dallas, a route dominated by American Airlines. The beauty of this is that Northwest has zero feeder traffic into either airport, meaning that they are willing to lose a fortune on this route just to torture American. And yes, ridiculous moves like this were one of the reasons Northwest had been sitting in bankruptcy for a couple of years. Well done.

AirAsiaX, the lowfare long-haul carrier from the folks at AirAsia, will launch in September with flights to as-yet-unannounced cities that will probably include Manchester, England, Kuala Lumpur, 2 cities in China and a city or two in Australia. Fares will start at $10 each way and average about $300 round trip. While the initial launch with be on regularly configured A330s, they will be taking ownership of new A330s next year that will fit 396 people, about 100 more people than a typical configuration. Fun!
If anyone can make this work, it’s the AirAsia team, which has single-handedly changed flying in Southeast Asia.

Spain’s Clickair has said that come the end of June, it will eliminate the need to check in for its flights out of Spain. They haven’t announced details, but they said it will be called something like "click and fly" and not involve using a mobile phone. Interesting. Don’t expect anything similar here for some time, but when it does, I’m sure Alaska Air (which has come up with nearly every innovation in online travel, from e-tickets to online check in) to be the first.

Be glad you weren’t flying British Airways last weekend: The carrier said that because of staff shortages, they managed to lose 6,000 bags. But fret not, the thousands of bags are being shipped to Milan (?) where they’ll be sorted out and returned to their rightful owners.

Following in the footsteps of Skybus, Britain’s Flybe has banned passengers from bringing their own food on board their planes. A spokesperson says that the move was done to protect passengers with food allergies (specifically, peanut allergies). This doesn’t explain why they sell peanuts on board.
