If You Can’t Beat Yeti Airlines, Join Yeti Airlines

Jan 14th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

I’m really only mentioning this because I love the name Yeti Airlines:  Air Arabia, the successful low-cost carrier based in Sharjah, UAE, has announced that it will jointly launch with Yeti Airlines a low-cost carrier based in Kathmandu, Nepal.  The airline will initially serve Sharjah later this month, and will expand to India, Qatar and [...]

China to Airlines: You Will Not Be Late

Jan 14th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

The Chinese government is taking a harsh stand against chronically late airlines:  airlines that do not meet on-time standards at Beijing during the July-September Olympic period will lose those routes during the following quarter.  Something tells me that China’s government isn’t kidding.

747 to Be Turned Into a Hostel

Jan 14th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

(Via USA Today):
An entrepreneur in Sweden plans to turn a 747 at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport into a low-cost hostel.  If you were wondering (and you weren’t) this is not the first airplane to be converted into a living space (assuming he goes through with this).  I mentioned seeing a guy turning a DC-6 into a [...]

Delta: Maybe that Merger Stuff Wasn’t Such a Bad Idea

Jan 11th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Everyone and their mother will comment on the news about Delta exploring mergers with either Northwest or United, so I don’t need to pile on to that other than to say what many have already said before:  airline mergers are notoriously difficult for many reasons (labor, operations, technology), and few have succeeded.  Putting two not-quite-strong-enough [...]

What to Do with a Bottle of Port in the Security Line

Jan 11th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Wanted to pass along a great little article from the SF Chronicle about the writer getting stopped in a security line for having a bottle of Port.  Worth the read…

10 Injured in Clear Air Turbulence Incident on Air Canada

Jan 10th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

If I’ve mentioned it here once, I’ve mentioned it 7 times (or more.  or less.  i don’t remember), you should be far more worried about turbulence than about whether an airline is "safe."  Case in point:  An Air Canada flight from Victoria to Toronto made an emergency landing in Calgary after 10 people were injured [...]

Skybus’ Miserable Revenue Situation

Jan 10th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

(First off, let me say that I know this news came out a couple of weeks ago, but it was the holidays, blah blah blah, so I’m writing about it now.  Sue me.)
We should certainly never write off an airline (or a candidate) based on their initial numbers, so I’m not at all suggesting that [...]

British Airways to Annouce Launch of OpenSkies

Jan 9th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

British Airways is announcing today the launch of OpenSkies, a new subsidiary that will fly between business centers (centres) in Europe and the US.  Initial routes will include flights from Paris and Brussels to New York (though which airport is yet to be determined), because they will have no competition on those routes.  Oh wait, [...]

British Airways Worker Loses Religious Discrimination Case for Wearing Cross

Jan 9th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

A British Airways worker who had sued the airline because she was told to hide the cross she was wearing on a necklace, lost her case when a tribunal ruled she was not discriminated against for her religious beliefs.  She took an unpaid leave after she was asked to remove the necklace, but returned several [...]

Emirates and SriLankan to Sever Ties

Jan 8th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

You may (not) remember a recent story about the President of Sri Lanka and his entourage being denied boarding on a SriLankan flight from London to Colombo because the carrier did not hold enough seats for his 30+ crew.  Fast forward to yesterday when that odd incident led to Emirates deciding to cancel its contract [...]
