ExpressJet to Suspend Commercial Flying

July 09 2008

In a move that will surprise no one, ExpressJet will cancel its commercial flights as of September 2.  Don’t worry, you probably weren’t flying them anyway.  (As I noted when they launched last year, it was going to be an ugly ride for them.  And it was.)

Yeah, once fuel prices doubled in the past year, this went from being a questionable business plan (brought on by having excess airplanes after Continental reduced XJT’s contract flying) to an impossible plan. There’s simply no way point-to-point RJ flying in secondary markets is going to make money with $4 jet fuel. At least XJT has had enough sense to change their game plan before totally sinking the company. They will continue on as Continental’s RJ feed.
