Stop me if this sounds familiar: You’re waiting for that important email from the office, or maybe just a text message about where your kids are at. Your phone vibrates, and the natural reaction for a lot of us is to take our attention off the road, if only for a second. When you look back up, brake lights! You know you shouldn’t be on your phone while driving, but then again we were all taught to keep our hands at 10 and 2 at all times.

This sounds silly coming from someone who flies on a plane just about every week of every year. I wish I could fly. No, not ordinary flying with the help of a jet with engines and wings – just me.
I realized this last night as I was virtually running through Houston’s Intercontinental (IAH) airport. I got off my plane from LAX at 10:30pm. I had my luggage with me so I was ready to get out of the airport as quick as possible. The terminal was quiet and all of the stores were closed. It was me, an empty moving walkway, and a long, long, long distance to walk between the last gate of Terminal E and the rental car bus location.

Today was one of those flights that I wished could have gone on for another couple of hours; an extended up in the air time would have been great. No turbulence, no pilot talking – just smooth flying.
Why would I wish such a thing? Because I was enjoying a nice nap and I wanted it to last a lot longer.
One of the flight attendants was adamant about waking me up during flight. “Do you want a blanket?” “Do you want a blanket?” “DO YOU WANT A BLANKET?” I could hear her leaning over me and I tried to ignore her, but the voice kept getting louder. She really wanted me to have a blanket. I was all cozy under my soft pashmina shawl with my eyes closed, but I guess I must have looked cold to her.

With Hurricane Earl approaching the east coast of the U.S. over the next few days, my flight through Newark to Scotland looks to certainly be at risk. Since airlines are usually very accommodating when it comes to re-arranging travel due to major weather issues, I knew that if I called Continental I’d be able to get re-routed through a non-hurricane city. Continental, Delta, United and other major airlines have already posted their advisories and travel waiver information.
