A Wake-Up Call on Steroids

June 28, 2011

If you’re like me and travel a lot, you could sometimes use a friendly reminder. Send out that report before 5 PM, get to the gym before dinner, join that conference call … all tasks that can easily get lost when on the road. The reminders on my phone can get lost in all of the other notifications I get throughout the day.

Wakerupper.com helps me get over these hurdles and keeps me on track, especially when I’m traveling. You can set up free phone call reminders for anything – so much more than just a wake-up call! You can even leave yourself a little note to be read back to you when the call comes in. My busy life just got a bit more manageable.

Postcard Journal Tip

June 20, 2011

Like to journal your travels but don’t want the weight of the journal? I like to write in a travel journal to keep track of where I’ve been, who I met, where I stayed and ate and anything else of interest. But I often do not want to carry the travel journal with me due to the added weight. When I leave it at home, I instead buy a few postcards and make my notes on the back of these. I slip these into my journal when I get home.

Tips for Air Travel with Pets

June 17, 2011

The decision to travel with pets is one that should take into consideration the various airline rules and regulations for pet travel. There are also certain basic tips to help make travel with pets easier for them and for you.

Basic Tips for Pet Travel

The most basic first step to preparing to travel with pets is to first make sure your pet is comfortable spending time in a pet carrier. All airlines require the use of an approved carrier, and the carrier will also make your pet more comfortable being away from home. Both your pet and its carrier need to be well marked with secure ID tags that include your name, your pets name, your address and all emergency contact phone numbers. It is also advisable to attach a photo of your pet to the carrier as well as carrying one with you at all times.

Many airlines prefer carriers that are approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It may be a wise investment, especially if you do a lot of flight travel with your cat or dog, to purchase a carrier that is approved by IATA.

If you are on business travel, be sure to schedule extra time into your travel plans so that you are not feeling rushed. Travel with dog and travel with cat requires extra time and patience; feeling rushed to get to your first meeting of your business travel by a certain time will leave both you and your pet feeling anxious and under undue stress.

Top Tips for Shopping Worldwide

June 15, 2011

One of the greatest pleasures for many travelers is shopping. It’s fun to see the different products that are available in each destination and to compare prices on items that we can also get at home. I also like looking at the names of products. In a store window was “Man’s No Fall More” hair loss prevention product, a name that didn’t translate quite correctly in English.

In Hong Kong, Starbucks coffee was priced much higher than in the U.S., but McDonald’s super value meals were at a really super price compared to home (about $2 US for a Big Mac meal). Cashmere was priced great, while Coach bags were higher. It definitely pays to do the research before buying to see what your visiting country’s specialties are (and have a calculator!).

National Car Rental’s Pearls of Travel Wisdom

June 13, 2011

I will be blogging on National Car Rental’s Facebook Page for the next couple of weeks. Posts from Pearls of Travel Wisdom will appear as part of National’s fan page as well. This is one way that National Car Rental is offering their customers ways to travel safer, smarter and with more enjoyment.

My participation in National’s Facebook Page is sponsored by National Car Rental. I’ve been renting cars from National throughout my many years of business and personal travel and I love their Emerald Aisle program. With Emerald Aisle membership, you can pick your own car – much better than having a car rental company assign you a car. And the safety of selecting a car immediately upon entering the car rental lot is so much safer than having to traipse to the farthest car in the lot late at night dragging your suitcase after a long flight.

Check out the National Car Rental Facebook page and share your Pearls of Travel Wisdom about car rentals with National – or share a comment on this post.

New Airport Screening Prototype

June 9, 2011

For the past ten years, Airport security hasn’t changed that much. Sure, the restrictions have become more severe and the screening process more invasive, but really, it’s still the same system. You put your bags through the X-Ray machine, and you walk through the metal detector, maybe getting a more personal inspection from a TSA agent. Recently, the government agency has introduced their Advanced Imaging Technology scanners, but it’s just another step in the same old process.

What if we got rid of the current system all together? What if you didn’t have to take off your shoes, take out your laptop, or remove your jacket? And what if this system was not only faster than our current checkpoints, but also cheaper?!?!

Well the International Air Transport Association turned “What if?” into “Why not?” They just unveiled their concept for the Checkpoint of the future, using biometrics and advanced scanners to simplify and speed up the checkpoint process.

Check out the video below to see how it works (the video has no sound).

Eclozets – Have Your Own Clothes Transported to Your Next Location

June 1, 2011

In front of my in the TSA line today was a traveler with just his briefcase – no luggage (not even a laptop). I thought, “how lucky to just have a day trip and not have to pack a bag.” I had one of those day trips once – just once in all my years of business travel.

But maybe this traveler is taking advantage of Eclozets and his clothes will be waiting for him upon arrival at his hotel. Eclozets is a service that carries an inventory of your clothes. Let them know when you’re traveling and what clothes you want sent and they’ll take care of it. Your clothes will be waiting for you upon your arrival and they’ll be picked up the morning after you check out to be dry cleaned and returned to their hub. Hmmm … interesting concept.
