Club Mobay – Jamaica’s Montego Bay Airport Lounge

What do you do when your airport doesn’t have any airport lounges or clubs provided by the airlines? Open your own, of course!

That’s the idea behind Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport’s new Club Mobay. Located near Gate 9, Club Mobay offers up everything you would expect from a Delta Sky Club or United Club and more. There are three ways to gain access: Your airline and status may already grant you access. Airlines based in the U.S. are in negotiations, but many other airlines who fly in to MBJ already have an agreement to allow their elite passengers to enter. Secondly, a 3rd party such as Diners Club, Priority Pass, or Airport Angel can get you in the door. Lastly, you can always buy a day pass (the current rate was around $30).

The perks begin right after you check-in. A Club Mobay representative first escorts you through an expedited immigration and security line. When you are in a country where tourism is their biggest industry and 99% of the flights are international, a quick trip through those lines is worth the price of admission alone. The escort continues through the shops and eateries all the way to the main counter of Club Mobay.

The decor of the club is genuinely Jamaican. The 10,000 square ft. include 3 separate lounges (including a quiet one to get some work done), a business center, a children’s play area, comfortable seating, and even showers if you need to freshen up before your next flight. The artwork offers a history of the island, from placards of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff in the music room to the framed front pages of Jamaican newspapers covering major events. Don’t forget to see the local photography lining the back hallway.

But I was present for the official grand opening and ribbon cutting of both lounges, attended by Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller. In her remarks, she said she hopes that Club Mobay, as well as Club Kingston on the other side of the airport, will make Jamaica the number one destination in the Caribbean.

I always love a great airport club, and with the added bonus of getting through security faster, Club Mobay is one of my new favorites.  Now I just need more of my business travels to take me to Jamaica!
