Top Tips for Shopping Worldwide

June 15, 2011

One of the greatest pleasures for many travelers is shopping. It’s fun to see the different products that are available in each destination and to compare prices on items that we can also get at home. I also like looking at the names of products. In a store window was “Man’s No Fall More” hair loss prevention product, a name that didn’t translate quite correctly in English.

In Hong Kong, Starbucks coffee was priced much higher than in the U.S., but McDonald’s super value meals were at a really super price compared to home (about $2 US for a Big Mac meal). Cashmere was priced great, while Coach bags were higher. It definitely pays to do the research before buying to see what your visiting country’s specialties are (and have a calculator!).

Top 10 Mundane Things That Make Me a Happy Traveler

April 8, 2010

Traveling is not all about sightseeing, great restaurants and experiencing new cities. While these things are great and can make for really enjoyable travel, they are not always in the plans for weekly business travelers. We travel more often because we have to, not because we want to.

For those of us who travel routinely, it can sometimes be mundane things that happen to us along our journey that get us excited. Or we create our own fun with little games we play with ourselves to get through the stress of travel (such as “if I leave this bottle of liquid hand lotion in my purse, will TSA spot it?” or “how many pennies can I leave in my pocket before I’ll ding?”).

In looking back at my countless travel days, there are many events that got me excited or made me smile, some so boring you may wonder if I have a life! So here I share –

Top 10 mundane things (Letterman-style) that make me a very happy traveler:

Simple Strategies for Safe Travels

October 28, 2009

I followed a piece of my own advice this week (advice I should always follow, but sometimes do not). I was nearing my hotel in Houston at 11pm, arriving when the hotel parking lot was very dark and quiet. I did not Woman Walking Alone look forward to unloading my suitcase and laptop tote from the car and walking across a very full parking lot so late at night (nor did my husband like the idea either!). Instead, I phoned the Marriott when I was within a mile of reaching the hotel. I asked for someone to meet me at the front door and escort me in.  She seemed initially surprised by my request, but definitely agreed to have someone meet me.  It was late enough that the bell desk personnel had left for the evening, so a security guard met me outside instead.

The security guard was extremely helpful. He unloaded my luggage and got it inside the hotel. He parked my car and brought in my keys. He couldn't have been more helpful, nor more appreciative of the fact that I did not risk my security so late at night.

This is a very simple strategy that will really help ensure your safety while traveling. Always have your hotel's phone number in your mobile phone for this very occasion.
