SPG’s Triple & Double Point Fall Promo – Simple T&Cs & Some Interesting FAQs…plus an iPhone bonus

by Adam

Starwood released details on their upcoming fall promotion and the terms and conditions are a lot simpler than SPG Nice Choice Spring / Summer promo.  I went for the triple points option during that promo and I’ll be continuing triple earning this fall/winter on SPG stays of 3 nights or more.  Here are the details:

  • Double Starpoints on 1 or 2 night stays
  • Triple Starpoints on 3 or more nights.
  • 250 Starpoints for stays booked at spg.com
  • 500 Starpoints for stays booked through the SPG iPhone app

You must register by Nov 30 and stays Oct 1 – Dec 20, 2012 qualify for the bonus points.  There is no limit to how many points you can earn. I really like the iPhone app and it’s very easy to use, certainly not worth neglecting the 500 extra points per booking! Several hotels are not participating in the promotion (including the Swan & Dolphin I discussed yesterday), check out a full list here.

Some of the more interesting FAQs

Is there a participating hotel and resort list for the web and mobile app booking bonuses?
No, all hotels and resorts that participate in the SPG program are eligible for the web and mobile app booking bonuses, regardless of whether the property is participating in the SPG Better by the Night promotion. A list of hotels and resorts that do not participate in the SPG program can be found at spg.com/t&c section 1.2.

If part of my stay was reserved using a Free Night Award or SPG Cash & Points, will my stay qualify?
No, Free Night Awards and Cash & Points do not count as qualifying stays for this promotion. Even if part of the stay is reserved using an Award and part is paid, the member will not receive bonus Starpoints for any part of the stay.

If I booked my stay prior to the promotion period, are my stays eligible for the web and mobile app booking bonuses? Bookings made prior to the promotion period are eligible, but only eligible stays by a registered member during the promotion period will receive bonus Starpoints.

If I modify an existing booking through an eligible web or mobile app channel, will I receive the booking bonus?
Regardless of where a reservation is modified, members will only receive a booking bonus if the booking was originally made through an eligible web or mobile app channel.

Bookings made through the SPG app for iPhone and the Chinese SPG app for iPhone qualify for the 500 Starpoints bonus. iPad bookings made through the SPG app for iPhone will also qualify for the 500 Starpoints bonus. However, please note: Bookings made through the SPG app for BlackBerry or the W Hotels app for iPhone qualify for the 250 Starpoints bonus.

I appreciate the followup on this promo. I may have missed it, but did you see what the rule was regarding elite bonuses. For example, if I would normally earn 3x/$1 on a $100 night, would I earn 300 points (elite and normal spend) x 3 night promo = 900 points + 500 for using iPhone = 1400 points + 250 elite welcome bonus = 1650 + 500 denied room cleaning (250 per night) = 2150 points on a $300 stay? I assume if I were using an SPG card to pay for it, I would climb somewhere close to nearly a free category 1 stay. Or am I just looking at this the wrong way?

@Sherpa – As per the T&Cs – With double Starpoints, a member will earn four total Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent. With triple Starpoints, a member will earn six total Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent. Elite-level extra Starpoint earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled or tripled. Only the base 2 Starpoints per dollar earnings are double or tripled. You would however earn your SPG AMEX credits as well!
